  • Ford Mondeo Estate Ghia X Suspension Pro 5 Aug 2014 (Forum)
I have a 2001 model which I believe has self levelling suspension? I purchased the car from a Ford dealer in Belgium. I used to tow a caravan with no problems. Last yaer a mechanic carrying out a pre mot sevice told me he had to replace a rear shock so replaced both but not with Ford parts. Since then my rear suspension is much softer, the car sits about 3 inches lower and the self levelling suspension is not working.

  • 3-week old tyre had a blow-out? 27 Nov 2013 (Forum)
I have now been told by my insurer that there is not enough evidence for me to claim my losses back, despite sending in pictures of the tyre and the tow truck report of the tyre. I was just wondering if anyone knew of any other way I could prove that the tyre caused the accident? Is it normal for a 3-week old tyre to blow out on the motorway?
  • Hyundai Tucson 2005 CRTD CDX - Engine misfiring 9 Oct 2012 (Forum)
I was driving in France recently and having refuelled I drove about 200 miles on the autoroute at about 80mph. on decellerating to enter services, the engine started to misfire and run rough. I stopped it and restarted with the same result and was evenyually towed off to a garage. The French garage tried changing the injectors with no improvement and stated that they had checked the fuel line (first thought was dodgy fuel), still the same. It's now back in the UK and my garage are trying to find the fault, the injectors are ok the fuel line clean, high pressure pump very slightly low on pressure but not by much.
  • Citroen C3 - Ripped off by approved dealer 27 Jun 2012 (Forum)
I had my car towed into a Citroen Approved repairer  I was told that the cambelt had slipped and that I would need the cylinder head reworked new valves etc and a new injector as one was damaged I was told the total cost would be £2300 plus VAT I asked if the bottom end of the engine was damaged and was told No    seven weeks later the dealer still has the car have been testing it bits and pieces and the removed the head again to say oh there is a problem with the block and pistons and have qutoed me £1800 plus vat and labour to fix this problem  What should I do the car is not worth £5k And why did the garge not pick up the bottom end damage on first inspection as I would of just gone out and either scapped the car or brought a recon engine  Many thanks for your advice in advance
  • Vauxhall Corsa C (2000 - 2006) - 02 1.0l Won't start 16 Mar 2012 (Forum)
I've checked for a spark and all three plugs are firing fine, also fuel is reaching the cylinders but it just won't fire at all. I've even tried towing it and nothing. All electricians I've spoken with tell me to bring it in and they'll have a look, no doubt costing me a fortune in the process and I'd prefer to narrow it down if I can before being compelled to dig deep!

  • Renault Megane (1999 - 2002) - 00 1.6 engine cutting out (driving through water) 31 Oct 2011 (Forum)
The when I am trying to start it up, the engine turns but it is not starting. The AA people have not helped, other than towing to garage. There I was told it is crank sensor, so they have changed it and reset the computer, and following day car started. Paid £150 for that and the next time it was raining, same thing again, drove through some water and engine died.
  • Volvo v50 - Volvo v50 - master cylinder failure? ££? 14 Feb 2011 (Forum)
It needs to be ultra reliable as its used to run a small business where not turning up is not an option. Do you think it will be worth repairing? Its going to my excellent independent on monday by tow truck - so he'll be able to tell - just canvassing opinion before that. Is my diagnosis likely to be correct?
  • Fines for parking on private property 20 Dec 2010 (Forum)
I decided to park the car close to the train station and walk to the cinema from there as I didn't want to stay on the road for any longer than I absolutely needed to. Upon returning to where the car was parked I discovered it had been towed away. It cost me £550 to get the car back! I am currently in the process of appealing the fine and have taken a picture of one of the signs which state it is private property which is covered in snow.
  • FIAT Bravo 1.4 - Worth repairing? 22 Feb 2010 (Forum)
My daughter bought a W reg (2000) Bravo last August from a dealer for £950. Last week it broke down on the motorway and was towed to our local garage. The AA man said and garage confirm that the cylinder head gasket has blown. It's not been a happy car. 2 weeks after my daughter bought the car it needed a new starter motor and a couple of weeks after that a whole new exhaust.
  • Citroen C8 MPV (2003 - ) - 03 2.0 Cambelt Jumped and engine damaged 12 Jan 2010 (Forum)
My wife was driving our petrol C8 during the snowy weather on Friday, apparently the car started sounding like a diesel and then came to a stand still. The AA towed her to a Citroen garage and they have confirmed that the cambelt has jumped and the pistons have damaged the valves, although they have not yet taken it apart they have just tried to put the cambelt back on..

Having shopped around i can get a 2nd hand one for around the £200 mark but for a recon im looking at £400 onwards. This is a delphi high pressure pump.
  • Peugeot 406 (1996 - 1998) - 97 2088 Ignition Switch - Diesel 28 Oct 2009 (Forum)
My totally reliable estate has suddenly expired and had to be towed home - not a pleasant experience . It came to a halt with smoke emanating from below the steering wheel and further investigation showed that the visible wiring is all fine so feel that the ignition switch is the problem.
  • Peugeot 406 (1999 - 2004) - 02 2.0 HDi loss of power 23 Oct 2009 (Forum)
About a week ago, I have noticed a reduction in the performance; it accelerates, but not as well as it used to, infact it feels like I'm towing a trailer or a caravan, or as if there's a massive flat spot. I can hear and feel the turbo kick in at about 2200rpm, but it feels nothing like it used to... It gets up to 80-90-100 mph, and sits there comfortably, but seems to take an age to do so.
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee (2005 - ) - 05 3.0 Steering Rack 30 Jun 2009 (Forum)
I have a Jeep Garnd Cherokee 3.0 CRD purchased 2 years ago from a Jeep dealer, Old of Yeovil, and which has always been srviced on time at that dealer. The car has been excellent, particularly for towing a two horse trailer. Until now at 60,000 miles when the steering rack has about 1/4" of play and needs replacing to pass the MOT. A quote of £1,200 to do this seemed high but I accepted it. I am now told the engine needs to come out to get at the rack and so a further £800 of labour.
  • Breakdown that was hardest to fix 25 May 2009 (Forum)
Both present, and the van would run, but not well. I managed to get it running better by retarding the ignition, but it was still not right. Towed it back to the garage, and the job was solved after a lot of head scratching by people far more expert than me. Turned out the timing belt had jumped one tooth. The valves were opening a fraction of a second too early or too late, but it would still run - just.
  • Hyundai Trajet MPV (2000 - 2008) - 04 2000 Engine will not start 18 Jul 2008 (Forum)
We then spotted the engine managment and immobiliser lights on and the engine would fire when they went out, but died within a second or so. Car towed to Hyundai dealer with suspected electronics fault. Any ideas? PS handbook does not say not to use biodiesel and previous usage has not caused a problem, although it is not used often.
  • Vauxhall Corsa C (2000 - 2006) - 01 1.0 petrol won't start after break down 18 Jan 2008 (Forum)
I'm not great with older cars, but my son's 7 year old 1.0 Corsa broke down on the M25 last night and had to be towed. Apparently there was a high pitched whine from the engine, some black smoke came out the back, the engine warning light came on, and it stopped. It now turns over but won't start. I've booked it into a garage on Monday, but do these symptoms lead to any obvious conclusions (that me being mechanically minded can't see)?
