fiesta 1.1 starting and running problems 29 May 2004 (Forum)
With careful balancing of the accelerator (and a few stalls later) it can be pursuaded to keep going, and once it gets warm it stops stalling. I've tried new HT leads and sparks. I think it might be the temperature sensors, if I check their resistance with a multimeter what should they read? Someone suggested cleaning the breathing tubes, how would I do that? Thanks everyone for your continuing help! -
A3 Quattro recall (new shape) 15 Apr 2004 (Forum)
I saw the original one "29-9-2003: On 21,694 cars shatter cracks may occur on vacuum pipe to brake servo, leading to loss of servo assistance to brakes." But as my car is 04 I'm assuming this was done. The new recall states "On A3 Quattro models, in rare cases there is a possibility that the left rear brake pipe may become damaged. -
Battery changing advice that works 11 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Many moons ago, my father taught me that when removing or refitting a car battery, always disconnect the positive lead second, and reconnect it first. The reason? If, whilst swinging the spanner round to do/undo terminal posts you touch the bodywork or engine, no short circuit will be completed. Think about it, and he's right. -
Omega V6 thermostat : Where is it ? 17 Dec 2003 (Forum)
It is not obvious to me exactly where the thermostat is !!. both of the main connections to the rad lead to some very inhospitable places on the engine so much so that I cannot get to or see anything which resembles a thermostat housing. Does anyone know where I can find this thing and also advise me if I should even attempt this. -
Mystery Motorway Exit... 17 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Does anyone know where the mysterious 'Works Exit' junction lead to that's situated between J14 & J13 east bound on the M4? I've heard that it's some sort of secret nuclear bunker or even a missile storage site. The fact that the sign is permanent - and not a temporary flimsy ? -
golf gti miss fire 15 Nov 2003 (Forum)
I have a 1990 golf gti 8v (167k on the clock) with an intermitant miss fire. it happens at random RPMs (even at tickover) and at various trottle positions and it seems to miss a beat. this can happen as a single or sometimes as a group seperated by a second or so. When it misses the rev counter doesn't twitch I have replaced the following plugs leads dizzy cap + rotor arm fuel filter stp injector cleaner The rest of the time it runs great, it revs smoothly and quickly, pulls well but this is baffling me. i have only had the car 3 weeks (didn't show up on the test drive) and it is begining to bug me. -
oily wet spark plug? - Mondeo 10 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Just taken no.1 plug out my \'94 2l mondeo. last plugs were placed at about 70k, 30 months ago.based on the pictures in the back of my heynes manual i would say the nose of thegsplug is between \'normal\' and overheating. the thread is quite oily and the upper part has quite a bit of crap ringed into the grooves. i am changing the plugs and leads as there is a bit of hesitation when accelerating in 3rd from about 2500 rpm. as this problem was previously cured lasttime by my garage by the prvious plug change i thought i would do the same. should i be alarmed by the plug appearance??? -

Rover 220 Coupe Problems 21 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I've tried disconnecting the following to determine a problem: Lambda Sensor ATS CTS TPS Idle control stepper motor Changed fuel relay, HT Coil, rotor arm and lead to distributor. Rover dealer had the car for a week and found no problem but tightened an earth connection. Problem returned the next hot day. Really stratching my head now and would appreciate any help. -
RAC breakdown cover update. 3 Apr 2002 (Forum)
I was chuntering that the building societies had just been pulled up for disadvantaging the existing members in favout of new business etc etc. Thanks for all the replies, I did follow several leads up and came close to a switch. However phoned the RAC today (one day before renewal) and put the case to them again, keep a customer etc etc, they finally agreed to renew for £43. Basic recovery for self plus SWMBO, both any vehicle and as a passenger. -
our Fred 12 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Just watched Fred Dibnah explaining the engineering skills and achievments of our ancestors. It makes one proud of this small island nation which could lead the world in feats of engineering and skills. Should be mandatory to teach this in our schools instead of alien cultures. And today we don't even produce in any quantity motor vehicles which in todays world are fairly low tech products. -
jetta ignition problem 3 Nov 2001 (Forum)
The Crypton tester shows an intermittent (every 10 to 40 seconds) loss of spark, the Crypton signal "breaking down in the middle of the scale as if turning up a resistor in the ignition circuit". He has borrowed the following components from other vehicles: coil, ECU, amplifier, leads and has fitted a new distributor, all to no effect. He is now suggesting there may be a fault in the loom. Any suggestions would be very welcome! -
Focus 2.0 engines 22 Aug 2001 (Forum)
Eventually, the dealer identifed the problem and fitted the kit supplied by Ford. All well and good except that the revs still don't die as quickly as they should do (leads to jerky gear changes in the lower gears), and the new induction noise is dreadful (sounds like a sports manifold/exhaust). Its going in for its 12 month service on Thursday, so I would appreciate any (constructive) advice, especially from any other affected owners. -
Diesel injector Wear. 18 Apr 2001 (Forum)
THEY WILL CONTINUE TO FUNCTION AS THEY ARE, AND YOU WON'T NOTICE MUCH DROP OFF IN ECONOMY, BUT THE SPRAY PATTERN WILL BECOME PROGRESSIVELY WORSE, LEADING TO PREMATURE BORE WEAR BY 140,000 - 150,000 MILES." My question is: Is this injector wear/bore wear problem specific to VW TDIs, or does it apply to all diesels? I have a Peugeot 405 turbo diesel, which has an indirect injection engine. -
Old Polo rickety starting 28 Mar 2001 (Forum)
Once it's warmed a little it runs fine. I haven't been able to replicate the problem for a garage. The coil, cap, rotor and leads are all Bosch and 2 years old. The cooling system has been flushed and anti-freeze mix filled. I have noticed that my neighbour's car (a J reg Peugeot 106) does exactly the same thing, as does my grandparent's C reg Honda. -
Volkswagen Golf IV Tdi - Battery Drain 16 Aug 2011 (Forum)

FIXED After this repairs, the car was still draining power of the battery so took it back to VW for another check with these results: -Defective Oil level sensor.
