  • Tyre replacement 4 May 2007 (Forum)
Two minutes later they telephoned the tyre depot and instructed them to fit tyres in compliance with original equipment. But does anyone really know. I think a lot of drivers are running around very badly shod, but do not approach the limits where tyre performance is tested. Some sound independant advice is needed, which is readily available to 'joe public' when trye replacement is neccessary.
  • MOT diesel test 1 May 2007 (Forum)
At the conclusion, the workshop foreman came over and said, "The vehicle's absolutely fine except it's a little smokey and needs a good clear-out to get through the emissions test. We can put an additive in and take it for a test run, it'll take about 15 minutes." I happened to be pushed for time and didn't ask to see the test sheet there and then. Instead of a £40+ bill I was given one for £70+ which included a quarter of an hour's time for the mechanic plus £10 for the additive.

  • 535 Headgasket & Block tester 13 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I noticed some condensation on the oil cap the other day, therefore I changed the oil and took the car for a run. At the end of 50 miles I open up the cap and the white milky substance is back again. On the test drive the temperature guage drops to zero then back up to the middle after 30 seconds. Thinking head gasket I order a block tester.
  • 406 HDI Broken aircon pipe 8 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I suspect this was already weakened hence the reason for the leak ( It broke easily). It connects the lower join on the compressor, runs along the front of the car to some rubber hosing and then another pipe (low pressure) to the evaporator. Does anyone know if the section of pipe is replaceable by itself. There doesn't seem to be any obvious connectors to be undone.
  • Many UK bus drivers don't speak English! 26 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Among many other things following facts are discussed (in reference to UK North, a bus company in Manchester) - Most of their drivers can NOT speak English (they mostly hail from Poland) - Govt. has no way to verify balance sheets of bus comapanies. So, when they demand subsidy (showing they are running in loss) local council has no way to determine if its fraud! - Buses often don't come on time (well, that's I think everywhere around Britain) Now all these incidents are shocking - especially the first one.
  • Bangernomics 20 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Suits me, of course, and I can only be thankful for an economic system that has enabled me to buy a well-used but well-preserved Xedos for under £700. Everything works as it should, including the air-con, the engine runs like silk and the leather upholstery has years of life left in it. So has the rest of the car, I suspect, but I've probably tempted fate enough for one day...
  • A question about diesel automatics? 17 Jan 2007 (Forum)
The reaosn I ask is that I do need economy (40,000 miles per year) and when I look at the 'official' fuel consumption figures, the auto's are quite a bit down on the manual's when you compare the combined figure but I am guessing that this is skewed by the auto being significanly less economical in the urban run and therefore affecting the combined figure. Right or wrong? Also, recommendations of economical diesel auto's most welcome. I'd quite fancy a passat but a combined figure of 42MPG is a bit low.
  • Megane 1.9dci cutting out 15 Jan 2007 (Forum)
I have a 2001 'Y Reg' Megane 1.9dci, 70k on the clock, previous owner had regular Renault dealer services, I've had it since 64k , in Sept 06 had a full serive & cam belt replaced at 68k. It has been running fine until last week the engine cut out at 50mph, the coil warning light came on & I stopped the car turned off the ignition & it restarted okay & I drove the rest of the way home okay. The car would have been warm/hot as I had just came off a dual carridgeway.
  • Rubbish Volvo advert 13 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Now, you might call me biased against Volvos (having been run over by one in the past), but I hope you'll forgive me if I have a rant about the latest Volvo advert on the radio. It's the one with the guy who gets a phone call while he's at the airport, and the first thing he does is launch into a monologue about how wonderful his XC90 is, until the caller asks how much it costs - at which point he gets all evasive and pretends his flight is taking off.
  • Help pick a small van 20 Dec 2006 (Forum)
It needs to be no taller then the old Caddy 1846mm ( a bit lower roofline would actually be better ) because it has to fit in a garage. He has seen a lot of good deals on run out pre reg mk4 Astravans with the 1.7 CDTi engine / Sportive spec, Is the mk4 Astra van with that CDTi lump any good? I have heard a lot of horror stories from the trade people over reliability. Also been told to look at Transit Connect, Citroen Berlingo & the new shape VW Caddy.
  • confirmation Please! 7 Dec 2006 (Forum)
    B) save a few pennies per annum. Results??. A) only really needed to use a car on Four occasions, b) saved a fortune on running expenses, so now am thinking of letting it go altogether. The first couple of times I needed it, as I hadn?t cancelled my fully comp insurance, I borrowed a friends car (third party cover), the second two times I managed with public transport,(was time consuming, more leg work!
  • A mysterious problem - BMW 25 Nov 2006 (Forum)
turn the ignition once, the engine fires. We ask the breakdown to not to come as the car seems to be running ok. We drive a further 70 miles up the M1 and reach home - absolutely no problems ? BUT the DSC warning light stays on, all the way. This afternoon. I start the car. It starts no problems. NO warning lights whatsoever.
  • 1.0L Corsa 1998 pinking 22 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Hi all, Got a bit of a pinking problem with my 1.0 Corsa at between 3000-3500 rpm in 4th and 5th gears. I've tried running it on Shell V-Power / BP Ultimate for a few weeks, and even given it a dose of STP System Cleanup. The spark plugs are correctly gapped, new, and look in fine condition. The engine management light has never come on (apart from briefly when starting up) which makes me think the knock sensor is fine...
  • Keep or replace? 16 Nov 2006 (Forum)
The gearbox is leaking too. I know she must sound like a bag of nails to most, but she appears and runs fine most of the time... The question is, do I sell her (I've got an offer of £2,500 from a local garage, though he doesn't know of the new overheating issue), or do I fix everything and hope nothing else becomes a problem?
  • Intermittent loss of PAS - Mondeo mk2 6 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Sometimes the assistance just returns, other times it doesn't. The weight when this happens is identical to trying to steer the car without the engine running - i.e. I can move the wheel, but it's hard work. Fluid level is just under MAX (where it has been since I bought the car). Fluid looks a little murky though. No sign of leaks and no puddles or stains on the drive or on the inside of the undertray.
  • 2,000 miles in my Passat 26 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Plus points Overall build quality - inside and out Strong performance - it's loosened up a lot now and pulls really strongly even when fully laden Nice to drive - good feel and light controls Loads of space I've only tried the heated front seats twice (briefly), and I'm looking forward to those cold mornings The engine warms up much faster than my Audi 1.9TDi Good stereo Niggles That electronic handbrake takes some getting used to and seems a bit temperamental! Water spills onto your shoes when you open the boot if the lid is wet (it runs down the sides and over the bumper) Engine can sound a bit gruff when cold and at low speeds Economy is a bit disappointing at the moment (about 44mpg), I was expecting about 48-50 with my driving style/routes Difficult to check oil level on dipstick - dipstick is black!
  • BMW 335d and service inclusive 21 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Can anyone advise if the package is worth it under those circumstances? I am generally aware of premium service costs after running the MB since new and do have memories of £600 service bills when pads / disks were needing changed but I'm struggling to work out the numbers with the BMW deal. Any advice welcome...
  • Wax Lyrical 9 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Rummaging through the 'car cupboard' in the garage yesterday, revealed that we're running low on car waxes/polishes. The last two bottles we had were Autoglyms 'Super Resin Polish' and Turtle Wax (green bottle, the name of which escapes me). The Turtle Wax was, quite frankly, a waste of space.
  • Ford Focus Zetec vs Ghia - please help! 29 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I personally prefer the Ghia but am I making a big mistake in terms of potential resale/driveability/running costs? Would welcome any (helpful) thoughts! Cheers Daisy
