Megane 1.9dci cutting out - Cliff Jumper
I have a 2001 'Y Reg' Megane 1.9dci, 70k on the clock, previous owner had regular Renault dealer services, I've had it since 64k , in Sept 06 had a full serive & cam belt replaced at 68k.

It has been running fine until last week the engine cut out at 50mph, the coil warning light came on & I stopped the car turned off the ignition & it restarted okay & I drove the rest of the way home okay. The car would have been warm/hot as I had just came off a dual carridgeway.

The car was okay for two days=150 miles, then again cut out at 50 mph, this time I put it in neutral & whist still free rolling, turn off & on the igition & it restarted & was okay again. Then the next day after being okay for another 75 miles at slow speed whilst cold it cut out, but this time took four attemptes to turn off & on , go two yards then cut out, but once started has been okay since.

Has anyone got any idea's what the problem might be ?

Cheers

Its dropping on to limp home mode due to the ECU registering a fault very common problem on the Renault 1.9dci engine unfortunately the cure is not so simple.Look at EGR valve, faulty temp sensor, maf sensor a faulty ECU ,you really need it plugged into a Renault computer and I stress Renault.

So local garage or diesel specialist no good then ? , I'm just a bit scared of the Renault dealers costs !! I cant throw too much cash at the car/problem.

Do a search on the site see the number of problems there are on this engine - getting the correct dianosis will save you fortune in the end ,once you you know what it is you could always do it youself.

Yeah , I've been reading the Espace 2.2 dci thread, 130 replys!!! takes time to ready , but similar problems mentioned in there, though not the same problem mentioned by the author. But the dosn't seem to be a difinitive answer !!!!....... so no doubt dealer here I come!

Cutting-out is very different to defaulting to limp-home mode. Only a very few faults can do that. Get the fault-codes read; [the dealers is the last place I'd try...] and then we'll know better which of them it might be.

Unfortuneatly as many contributers will tell you only the dealers have the correct upto date software.

Screwloose,

Can I get the fault codes read at a local garage, will they have up to date software ? , would I be saving much on a diagnostic check ?

Many garages will have a scanner with the correct protocol to converse with a Renault common-rail EDC system. Typically this will cost £25-£45. I've lost count of the times that I've had to fix Renaults that have been to the dealers with the light on and have then been told that "there's no code stored" - but here's the bill for an hours diagnostic time.

Only if an ECU software update is required is the dealer your only practicable option.
