  • Nissan Sunny (1991 - 1995) - 1994 1.4 passed mot then conks out! 28 Mar 2009 (Forum)
While returning from mot station with friends Nissan Sunny (which it passed) the car started stuttering as tho running out of petrol. I had some fuel in the boot and topped it up......after a lot of cursing and cranking the engine eventually fired and drove home without further trouble. The following day the car refused to start.....cranked over no problem but would not fire.
  • Mercedes Benz Vito 123 kombi (2005 - ) - 2001 110CDi - Starting Problems 16 Feb 2009 (Forum)
I have problems with starting the van at the moment I initially thought it was something to do with the glow plugs as the light was staying on after ignition however I have had glow plugs changed but I'm finding that the van will start then if I turn it off and try to start again it will turn over but not fire!! If I take the van on a run and get it warm it does start. This morning I got up tried to start it and no chance (it wouldnt even fire when my brother in law towed me!!) Anyone got any ideas please please please. cheers Matt {don't worry, I'll put the year/engine details in the subject header for you.
  • Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - Real world motoring (the poor man's burden) 10 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Trouble is, the car needs an MoT and no emission figures can be measured without the exhaust being fixed, 50 quid plus fitting at least. So if, as seems quite possible, running in that state has damaged or cooked the cat, that will be another hundred plus fitting more or less, plus any other bits and bobs it may need for the MoT. Fortunately my garage man is an intelligent and sympathetic individual who understands my needs and doesn't see me as a cash cow.
  • "Exceptional weather event" thread Vol 2. 9 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Journey back home in the snow as well but traffic moving, albeit slower than normal. My son is out sledging and snowball fighting with his pal and I have to run pal home later on. Just so happens that on the way there is a huge big snow covered Lidl carpark which will be empty at that time............ Its times like this you appreciate the Altea's conventional handbrake instead of the Scenic's auto one......
  • Renault Espace (2002 - ) - 2005 3.5 Flat battery 2 Feb 2009 (Forum)
It appears that with the Esapce, with all its security SYSTEMS and key less entry, this must drain the battery and so after a few weeks the BATTERY is all but flat. Once its been on a run for a hour or so, its fine and starts no prob. The alternator is charging at 14.5 V. Does anyone else have sim probs with 'modern' cars with all of these fancy electronic systems draining the battery ?
  • Renault Clio II (2001 - 2007) - 04 1.216v - exhaust gas monitor warning 29 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Is there any onscreen diagnostics I can access to try and get a specific fault code? The car seems to be running ok so I am suspecting something simple like a Lamdba sensor but we all know a dealer would charge silly money for this. £50 plus VAT for the diagnostics, £200 for the Lamdba, £80 for the labour when I can do the diagnostics and possibly fit a new sensor myself.
  • Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - 1998 1.8 Misfire 26 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I was driving up the motorway around 60mph the other day, when I wanted to overtake, I was overtaking and there was some smoke from the exhaust and the car started to lose power. I got the car home, which ran rough all the way. Let the engine cool and then started it, it is running really rough, from what I can tell it is misfiring on Cylinder No.3. When I took the plug out there was oil on it and I could see a thin layer of oil on top of the piston. The car has been burning oil for months so I would assume it is burning it through Cyl 3, all other cylinders are clean and plugs were ok, apart from Cyl 2 where the plug was black, but not oily or wet.
  • Volkswagen Passat (2005 - ) - 2007 170 PDi - Is my DPF blocking up? 17 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Is there any way to find out how happy my DPF is with my regular commute to work? It includes two 8 mile runs on a motoway at speed - but in 6th gear the engine is only doing 2000 rpm? I'd prefer to modify my driving style (cruising in 3rd!??) before the warning light comes on! (I'm not sure if a sudden drop in MPG indicates this burn-off process occurring?)
  • Corsa, Clio or Grande Punto advice please ... 30 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I've been offered a nice ex courtesy Punto (1.4 Active 4d) for around what I want to spend but my wife prefers the Clio (we only keep one car, she doesn't drive but has a say) ! and then the Corsa seems like a good buy ... I don't need speed just reliability and cheap running costs and these are all pretty similar hence my dilemma (of course there's also the Seat, Yaris, Fiesta etc) ... any advice very welcome ... of course maybe I should leave it a couple of months anyway .... decisions decisions.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 2003 1.6 Strange Watery Noise 10 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Hi, My first post and it's asking for help.... when I start my 53 reg car from cold there is a strnage noise like running water coming from the bulkhead... We've took it to a garage, straight away I might add, and they've found the water pumps knackered, could the watery noise be caused by the failing water pump or could this be something more serious.
  • Toyota Corolla and Verso (2002 - 2007) - Come back Laguna,all is forgiven!! 25 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Good news is i didn,t sell the Laguna and bangernomics suddenly appears to be a good option. Has anybody here managed to run a Laguna 1 to high mileage without massive expense? Thanks...Phil.
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 1998 1.3 Engine noise - loose air duct ? 30 Oct 2008 (Forum)
My 1998 Fiesta (1.3 Endura petrol engine) has been producing even more engine noise than usual - it now makes a sort of mild roaring noise in a particular band of engine speeds. I've had a look under the bonnet, and there seems to be an air duct (I think) that runs from the air filter enclosure to a smaller kind of filter assembly directly above the radiator. The air duct is flapping around loosely, because the foam washer that fits between the duct and the spigot at the top of the radiator has fallen to pieces.
  • Volkswagen Golf II (1983 - 1992) - 1988 1.6 Ignition Coil testing ? EZ engine 20 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Having a recurring intermittent problem with 230K+ miler Golf. Runs well most of the time, and will then start missing and finally grind to a halt. Will usually restart then after a few minutes and be fine. Carb has been replaced with reconditioned unit about 30K miles, and all works as it should, so discounting carb icing ?
  • Drivers handbook Vanden Plas Princess 10 Oct 2008 (Forum)
This is a hard back (red coloured) bound book and consists of 74 printed pages and is in a very good condition. Oh! If only modern day cars were as simple to run, maintain and own as then but with the convenience of the technology we have within them today on them! Then again greasing and oiling was someting of 'chore' when you owned one of these vehicles as I read it but home servicing was a complete doddle!
  • Renault Clio II (1998 - 2001) - 01 1.2 D7F stutters after top end rebuild 25 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I recently rebuilt a 1.2 Clio D7F which had a broken cambelt. 4 Valves had obviously hit the pistins although the damage to the crowns was light. The engine runs and passed the MOT ok. However it stutters a bit, is jerky at tick over, it appears a bit down on power and seems to stutter right through the rev range. I replaced 4 valves & ground them in. problem occurred so I did a compression test one cylinder (4) was slightly low so off came the head again (deep joy!)
  • Volkswagen Polo III (2000 - 2002) - 2000 1.4 Engine Management warning light 22 Sep 2008 (Forum)
The place we got the belt replaced did a diagnostic check and is just came up with unusual engine timing. It was running fine so the warning light was reset. All ok again for about a week until today when the engine warning light came on again but the car lost power in all gears and will not go about 60. I plan to take it back to the garage but I have been trying to google any idea's but not a lot of luck.
  • Importing motorhome from the Channel Islands 11 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Does anyone know what the procedure would be if I did buy it and bring it to the UK? I know that I would have to pay UK VAT, but would I have to run it through type-approval tests before registering it in the UK? BTW, I quite sympathise with those who regard motorhomes as the being the black sheep of satan's family, and I have grave doubts about the wisdom of owning one even if it was given to me for free.
  • Renault Espace (1985 - 1997) - 1995 TD heater blower motor problem 5 Sep 2008 (Forum)
But no heat, as far as I can make out, and no blower whatsoever in any position! I have asked my local garage and they say that they have run a live to the heater and it still does not work? (How would I repeat this check myself, just to make sure?) Therefore according to them, its not the switch or the resistor? They are quoting over £200 to do the job?
  • DPF....Bypass? 30 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Whats to stop someone doing the same with their diesel exhaust and fitting a by pass pipe eliminating the DPF? Would it in fact be beneficial to the overall running of the car. I'm asking as posters constantly refer to modern diesels needing to be regularly driven long distances to keep the dashed thing clear, is this really the case? Are there any other more reasonable preventative measures we can take to help prolong the life of these emission systems?
  • Best automatic under £3.5K .... 9 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Still, at least one can seem vaguelly knowledgable by using the forums ... :-) Anyway, a mate has had enough of running a large 4x4 - doesn't do a large mileage, but just stuff like new tyres can be cripplingly expensive. However, needs an automatic (no manual license), big enough for a family of four (with prams and such) - so golf-size car a bit tight.
