  • Skoda Fabia Estate - Missing service history. 10 Jan 2014 (Forum)
Hello, My nephew has just bought a 52 plate Skoda 1.4 petrol estate  in Swindon from an independent garage. There was no owners manual but he easilyily got one from ebay. The car runs well at 78000 miles but there are no service records. It is a Gloucester registration and I spent time on the internet yesterday to try to find some service records but had no luck, no one was helpful probably because there was nothing in it financially  for them to talk to me.

  • BMW 3 Series Compact E46 - Old Car Electrics 7 Nov 2013 (Forum)
I know cars don't last forever but my bicycle is a more reliable and cost effective transport for local running about. And I like BMWs too!
  • Honda Jazz - 1.2 Honda Jazz motorway fuel efficiency 1 Oct 2013 (Forum)
Will be better fuel consumption wise if I were to get a 1.4 Honda Jazz or perhaps a 1.6/2.0 Civic?  For the long run(1-2 years),  should I trade in my current 1.2 Honda Jazz for those? Thx!
  • Volkwagen Golf - Car with undisclosed damage 4 Sep 2013 (Forum)
When I picked up the car everything seemed fine on first inspection. At some point later I discovered a scratch running along the bottom of the passenger side door. Thinking this was a flying stone, I left it at that. Fast foward 4 years. I had a friend who was a car detailer machine polish the car. He informed me that the scratch could not be buffed out because it had been repaired and relaquered at some point. 6 months later I had a local valet service come and detail the car.
  • Honda Civic 1.8 EX 2006 - Battery issues? 30 Aug 2013 (Forum)
I’m not sure if this is battery related (the indication cell, still shows green) – or whether an alternator or even alarm fault (running the battery down). Apologies if this all sounds a bit random but struggling to work this out & don’t have the ready cash to go straight to a main dealer. Many thanks
  • Ford Focus Mk 2 Petrol - Could this be an electrical problem? 18 Aug 2013 (Forum)
Fuel consumption seemed fine until a friend asked about it... now think it is going down quicker but maybe just mind playing tricks. Did a short 4.6 mile run across town with a short stretch uphill to 60mph and the fuel reader dropped by seven miles so not bad I think...? Its a 2.0 petrol. Maybe unrelated but all this happened after I had a tyre changed on Wednesday.
  • Hyundai i10 - good substitute for a Yaris? 28 Jun 2013 (Forum)
Why not keep this Yaris (it's been totally reliable like the other three, but has done 52,000 miles)?  Because she hasn't got £3,500 for the balloon payment - nor have I without running up a debt myself - and I'd prefer not to have her make repayments coupled with the possiblity of replacements and repairs as the mileage mounts. We've tried an i10, and the1.2 Active has a nippy engine, an excellent gearchange and perfectly acceptable ride and handling - and as much room inside as a Yaris.
  • VW Golf 1.4tsi - VW DSG Mostly good, but a few problems 11 Jun 2013 (Forum)
(nIce to see the forum running again) I have the aforementioned Golf 1.4 tsi with the 7 sp dsg auto. The change quality is mostly excellent, but there are a few problems. 1. When pulling away from rest, you have to be really precise to avoid a lurch.

  • What would I choose 28 Mar 2013 (Forum)
I got asked the usual hypothetical question recently, namely, if I could have any car I wanted, what would I have? However, the proviso was that once I was given it, I had to run it as my only car for a few years. Now, with all the will in the world, exotics are out. I have a clutch of Grandchildren (car seats), infirm parents, a car pool of four big adults. I do a lot of DIY so trips to the tip and DIY sheds are regular occurrences.
  • Ford focus/mondeo Volkswagen passat/polo - Advice on what to buy 22 Mar 2013 (Forum)
Do I go for a newer car with higher mileage, or an older car with less mileage? I know with this limited budget I am taking a risk which is a worry. My car I have now is running on borrowed time and only has until the end of the month before the MOT is due which I would rather not fork out for as I will be selling it on for spairs/repairs or scrapping it. Any advice appreciated.
  • Vauxhall Vectra C - Engine Water Temperature 18 Feb 2013 (Forum)
We have an ongoing problem with my wifes Vetra C bought new in 2003 and now covered 54000 miles 1.8 XE model. The vehicle is mainly used for short runs approx 7-10 miles. The engine water temperature gauge does not appear to reach what I believe is normal operating temperature, according  to Haynes manual the thermostat opens at 92c. On trips of 7 miles with an outside air temp of 1c the gauge does not move of stop and on  longer trips of 10-12 miles does not go above the 1st marker line (60c ?)
  • Toyota Avensis 2.0i 2007 - Has my clutch gone? 18 Feb 2013 (Forum)
We have booked it in to a local garage who reckon the clutch has gone. Prior to today there has been no sign of any impending trouble...the car has been running fine. Any thoughts on what specifically may have gone (I realise I will know more on Monday) but it would be helpful to have some idea of what to expect? It's also covered by a Warranty Direct policy which does cover some elements of the clutch e.g. cable, master & slave cylinder and pedal assembly but not clutch covers, friction plates, release bearings, burnt or worn out clutch parts.
  • Vauxhall Zafira/ Citroen Picasso/ Renault G Scenic - Need advice on a reliable second hand 7 seater 4 Feb 2013 (Forum)
I need something that can accomodate our family (2 adults, 3 kids) with some decent boot space. Its mostly for local runs, but twice a month we do long trips (300miles round trip). I'm looking for something reliable (because we don't know a whole lot about cars/ mechanics to cope with break downs) and also something that's economical for the short journeys.
  • Nissan Pathfinder Aventura - Broken crank shaft 16 Jan 2013 (Forum)
The vehicle has had all its services carried out by Nissan main dealers and the service book is stamped for each, together with the workshop check lists and receipts etc. Nissan so far have not offered to help me with the cost of the repair which is going to run into several thousand pounds to get the vehicle back on the road. This attitude is based on the fact that the vehicle is out of warranty by two years despite having only done 51000 miles. Am I being unreasonable in hoping that Nissan should contribute to the cost of the repair and if not what kind of assistance should I expect to receive.
  • Help - which used family car to buy? £5500 10 Jan 2013 (Forum)
I have had a good look around auto trader and local car supermarket, and went to a car auction at Bruntingthorpe this morning but I just don't seem to be getting much for my money. Low running costs are important to me.  I had been looking at Focus Estates, I can get a 2008 1.6tdci with 80,000 on clock, or a V50 2005 with around 60,000 on clock. I have read on here the sage of diesels repair costs and am now very hesitant to go for these though.
  • Renault Espace 2.2 dci 2001 - Espace 2.2 dci lack of power uphil 24 Dec 2012 (Forum)
I have not taken car to local Renault dealer as I have no confidence they will find actual fault. Done 153,000 mls. Any ideas as to how I find fault? I did run very low on fuel once and hence changed filter in case debris sucked into lines but no difference. Thanks for any ideas.
  • Peugeot 206 Y Reg 123K - Lazy Starter Motor? 4 Dec 2012 (Forum)
One mechanic who lives in my street heard my car turning over and suggested that I have a lazy starter motor, which would make sense as I once my car starts running, I could go up the road to get some petrol, then my car will turn over without any problems and it never impacts on my 15 mile journey into work. This only happens on cold mornings, mild mornings and other times of the year it is never an issue.
  • Toyota - Yaris Verso replacement 30 Oct 2012 (Forum)
From my point of view, reliability is of paramount importance, which I suppose rules out French cars! Fuel economy not a factor and would much prefer petrol to diesel. It might come to just running on the Yaris for a few more years, and accept it might need some major repairs, if there are no better options. Any ideas?
