  • Renault Roadside Assistance 24 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Cars registered after March 2004 will be only covered for mechanical failure or manufacturing faults. Breakdowns caused by lossed keys, locked in keys, Running out of Petrol, Puncture (Changing wheel) are not covered. They will still attend but will be charged by user. On the website is says call out is £95. Of course they sell you a 'Renault for you Non Incidident cover' for £50 which covers you for the above problems but thought its a poor show for Renault to charge for this.
  • Suggestions for first car? 31 Oct 2004 (Forum)
My Dad bought it for me a while ago, and so it is all in his name, but I want to begin to build up my NCB, so I want to get my own car. I'm only 18, and starting uni next year, so reliability and low running costs are at the fore. I was thinking about a 306 DTurbo, but I only have about £2200 to spend. These are fairly high-mileage cars, and though the engine can take it, can the rest of the mechanicals (primarily suspension, not so bothered about electrics, used to it!)?
  • VW Passat 1.8 20v Mis-Fire 29 Oct 2004 (Forum)
DD} I have been having trouble with my passat 1.8 20V turbo 1997 R plate, about a week ago I was doing the home run from work stopped once, and when i started again the engine was juddering, rather like a mis-fire. I got home and took each plug off each coil to see which one it was. I found that it was piston 2 which was not firing, as a result i changed the spark plug, but it was still the same.

I can see copper electrodes giveing a wider heat range, and platinum electrodes giving longer life, but how can chilling steel give any effect which lasts longer than the first few seconds? I suppose if you run a landy for 25 years, and then service it, 13% is easily obtained The information with the plugs refers to a platinum "catalyst" added to your fuel via the vacuum pipe to the carb as you drive.(www.ctech3000.com) and promises up to 22% increase, guaranteeing 10%.
  • Pug306xr speedometer/oxygensensor. 6 Aug 2004 (Forum)
I have a relativley old peugot 306xr 209000ks on it, but runs really well the majoritei of the time. I have expereinceing many strange things and am wondering if there is hope for it. firstly ater driving for while an hour or more the speedo will start jumping around and then finally give up completely, after which It will start to stall completley as soon as the clutch is pushed in no matter the speed Im doing. also during idle atleast for 1-2 minutes at a set of lights the engine light will come on, whic according to peugot was a oxygen sensor au$500 which lasted two months and when taken back to peugot it would cost me again to have the computer looked at roughly $90 to reveal the same problem with which they shrugged their shoulders and said they cant garauntee it wont happen again if replaced, I think all these problems are associated and their is or was nothing wrong to the oxygen sensor. any insight would be much appreciated, as taking my car to anyone else resorts to them apologising and saying I have to take it to a dealer to have the computer checked.
  • Renault Espace 2.2DCi Poor Performance 12 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Honest John, I run a January 2001 X plate Renault Espace 2.2DCi. The vehicle covers approx 15,000 miles per annum and is used on a combination of 4, 14 & 150 mile round trips regularly. Since about 15 months old it has suffered from a recurring starting problem.
  • Citroen C5 verses Passat 5 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Hi I'am new to this but wanting to share my car experiance's 30years of driving Ford's Vauxhall's Citreon's Passat .The last car The Passat I have at present 1.9 diesel TDI best 40 mpg is this the cost of a Turbo (speeding ticket machine) take it off and give my the confort and economy of the C5 made by Volks Wagen after 2 1/2years and 60,000 miles with a C5 HDI 50mpg driven head with smooth ride the only reason for not returning to Citreon (100% useful electronics at launch they said)was the self leveling suspension making the car comfortable when locked and the battery running down as a result of this. If the C5 had been of the same build quality as the Xantia it whould not have had any competitors .I guess the same air polution that helped the Magane come to market most have had a connection with Citreon and put a spanner in the works .When's Jerry going to ask high mileage drivers to test new cars and take speed out of the judgement .
  • v.w. quality 13 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Have vw's engineering been compromised by forcing their suppliers to cut costs and quality, while vw cleverly but dishonestly give the appearance of quality, or do vw's still have an underlying engineering integrity which will show in the long run? Are yaris's only reliable in the short term, like japenese videos? Any comments?

  • citroen ax starting problems 2 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I recently had to leave it in because it was overheating, and the mechanic fitted a new thermostat, flushed out the radiator and engine coolant and fitted a new radiator cap. Since then I have heard what sounds like running water coming from beneath my feet particularly when I accelerate, although there is no wet patch beneath the pedals. I also had to top up the coolant levels with about 1/2 litre, though they were all topped up and checked when the car was fixed - on 22nd May.

  • 2nd Cheap car for commuting 26 May 2004 (Forum)
So I'm looking to buy a cheap car that will need to do 30k miles/ year reasonably reliably, be cheap to run, maintain and insure. It will only need to carry the driver (me) along motorways, dual carriageways. So size isn't a problem. As for gadgets, I'd like A/C, PAS, ABS and a radio. Any suggestions on the car?
  • avensis vibration on acceleration 12 May 2004 (Forum)
The problem is pretty minor - my wife doesn't really notice it - but it's annoying me somewhat! The engine seems to run very sweetly so I don't suspect any sort of misfire. Any ideas on the cause? Thanks, MarkL.
  • SAAB 9-3 TiD - Turbo Failure? 4 May 2004 (Forum)
My partner's 5 year old SAAB 9-3 Tid was serviced about 6 weeks ago and she mentioned sluggish performance but nothing was detected (the car was serviced but not road tested). I don't drive it at all often but I tried it today and while it starts and runs OK, doesn't blow out any colour of smoke and no odd temperature readings, it seems well down on power. It will not pull to the red line (4,500 rpm) in 3rd gear, foot flat to the floor, and obviously doesn't get there in 4th or 5th.
  • Accuracy of Parkers 20 Apr 2004 (Forum)
I am shortly having to sell my Legacy GLS Estate (my third) due to purchase of new business which necessitates running a commercial. The purchase includes a sign written van so I need to sell privately within the next 4 to 6 weeks. Parkers guide recommends £3025 for a private sale and £3295 from a main dealer. However, my local dealer has a 97 P on the forecourt at £4995!!
  • renault clio1995 - no spark 9 Apr 2004 (Forum)
Knowing the cost this would incur I am reluctant to give it to the dealers for this at the moment so I am trying to see about some of the cheaper things that might cause the problem. My first thoughts are to replace the coil and run an injector cleaner incase its a blockage forming in the fuel lines. Has anyone got any more suggestions I can try before I have to pay out? Any tips would be appreciated Mark
  • Passat Warranty Rejection, safety 10 Mar 2004 (Forum)
I intend to contact VW today to follow this up, but there is an urgency to this now because the used car warranty (such as it is) runs out on Saturday. Also, the car is booked in for its MOT the same day! I need to know if any of the above is grounds for an MOT failure and/or an urgent safety issue. Any advice on negotiating with VW today would be very much appreciated. andymc

  • Idle speed prob & Service light. Daewoo 29 Feb 2004 (Forum)
The instruction book is not very clear on that but states that \'if the indicator illuminates during normal running, a fault has occured. The engine control indicator light permanently on indicates fault which may damage vehicle\'. But it later says that \'if the engine control indicator comes on briefly and then goes out again this is normal and does not indicate a system fault\' So, what is this light about and how does it work ?
