  I am about to test the A1 1.4TFSI S-line 150PS (COD version), but worry that it won’t be much different from the 125PS A1. I have also driven the new MINI Cooper 1.5 3-cylinder petrol (136HP) and was impressed with the engine (economy and performance). but think that the MINI is expensive unless you dispense with the various packs. However, the MINI was more fun than the Audi A1.

    A second W204 Mercedes C220CDI confirmed their price level: 2007/57, 54k miles £17,500; 08, 42k miles £18,400.   R50 MINIs are still strong.   Yet a 49k mile 2006/56 Focus 1.6i LX, estate auto with air looked cheap to me at £3,750s.   Bargain of the day was a 72k mile Mercedes CLS 320CDI, sold for £16,500, £1,250 under trade book.

  Fewer new cars now mean fewer used cars in the future and if demand for used cars holds up they can only get dearer, as they have before in the years following a slump. Some prime examples were £12,150 paid for a 16k mile 2007/57 MINI Cooper diesel, £6,000 for a 2,000 mile 08 reg Peugeot 107 Urban and even small Fords seem to have hopped on the elevator with £4,000 being paid for year old Kas and £5,050 for an 11k mile 2007/57 Fiesta 1.2 Style Climate.

  There have been some eyebrow-raising values in the used car market this year so you might be questioning whether now is the time to sell your car. Take a three year-old MINI Hatch which now costs 57 per cent more than a model of the same age cost in 2019 (£15,367 versus £9,811), according to AA Cars .  Demand for some models is so strong that they are even appreciating with age.

  Love it or loathe it, the Rover Metro is very much an icon of British culture. Launched (as the Austin Mini Metro) in 1980, it was a British car 'to beat the world' - and despite its antiquated A-series running gear, it was a more than worthy rival to the likes of the Ford Fiesta and Renault 5 .  With Austin-Rover desperate to move away from the utilitarian days of British Leyland, the Metro was progressively improved throughout its life.

  The platform was derived from that of the Mk 4 Fiesta, which had won universal praise for being a big step forward from the Mk 3, despite being based on essentially the same bodyshell. In many ways, it was reminiscent of the original Mini – small, noisy, but set up in such a way that you could chuck it into the bends without really slowing down, which made for an entertaining drive, especially when nipping in and out of traffic.

  The HRDC Touring Greats will pit Mk1 Jaguars against Austin A35s, Hillman Imps, Morris Minors and Ford Prefects, while the HRDC BTCC Celebration 1958-1966 should prove equally enjoyable, as Minis battle it out against Mustangs and Lotus Cortinas. Expect even more Lotus Cortinas in the U2TC for pre-1966 under 2.0-litre Touring Cars. Bringing the Touring Car contingent up to date are the Historic Touring Car Challenge (think Capris, Rover TWR Vitesses and XJS Jaguars) and the HSCC Super Touring Car Trophy, which will see cars such as Honda Accords and Ford RS500s taking on Nissan Primeras and Alfa Romeo 156.
