VWs and petrol grades 27 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Reading the sales brochures for new VWs, most seem to have a disclaimer next to the engine description. Paraphrasing, "Thanks to anti-knock technology you can run this on 95 Ron petrol". Does this imply that using anything other than super unleaded is cutting corners in a way that could come back to haunt you? Or have the cars really been built for ordinary, and super would be pointless/damaging? -
Electrical Problem - Astra Mk III 9 Aug 2004 (Forum)
None of the 4 door switches will light the lamp and nor will the Pull On, lighting switch. Rather than strip the thing of its linings looking for the wiring loom runs, has anyone any ideas about this type of problem from previous experience ?? -
Buying advice - a 4 wheel drive for ... 28 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Folks, We need a little advice. We are looking a for a small diesel 4 wheel drive car for commuting that will be cheap to run and will get us to work in the harsh winter here in north east Scotland. We don?t really want to spend a lot of money but rather than give a budget we just want to hear ideas. It doesn't have to be new ( it can be any age in fact) just as long as it meets the above criteria. -
1998 Nissan Micra starting bearing noise 17 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I have a runabout Micra in Madeira and when I start the car from cold I get a "scraping" bearing noise which disappears after several minutes of running the engine. If the engine is warm the noise does not occur when the car is restarted. Its hard to get a garage to look at it because getting there the engine is now hot -so no problem to listen too and there are language problems. -

I've just bought this car as a project. It is still a good runner but the bodywork is a mess. the oil pressure is running a little low, unsuprising after 120k and 30 years of wear. I have no idea what oil is in at the mo but its good and black and probs needs changing. what oil would you guys recommend for a moderate miles 30 year old 911 engine FYI I'm getting about 22psi at 2200 when I should be getting about 30-35ish thanks -
Oil Level on Golf TDI '96 1 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I check my oil levels regularly but it never seems to go below the recommended level. I usually check it about 10 mins after a run. I have also checked it when cold but don't seem to get different readings. The oil light hasn't flashed or anything but it just seems a bit disconcerting. Any ideas anyone? Thanks. -
ford mondeo oil consumption 22 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I am of the opinion that one or more piston rings have failed, but none of the sites I have visited have recorded any similar problems, although another friend commented how he has suffered the same fault. Other than the usual Mondeo problems, is this a known fault? No running problems recorded. -
Golf 2.0 AGG Engine 21 Apr 2004 (Forum)
Hi Having a prob. with my Golf 2.0GTI 1996 (35,000 miles)AGG engine code.It has started to switch off when I am about to stop after I push the clutch down, for eg. at traffic lights. It runs 100% in between this. Prior to switching off absolutely no indication that there is a problem. Starts up first time after these episodes. I have changed plugs and it has made no difference, cleaned distributor cap, and checked lead connections. -
Mondeo Idle Speed 16 Apr 2004 (Forum)
I have a '95 Mondeo 1.8 which is very slow to return to normal idle speed when coming to a halt. It starts and runs ok, but when coming to a halt the idle speed stays at between 1500 & 2000rpm for two to five seconds before dropping back to 950rpm. Gunsons Fault finder gives fault code of 327 (EGR system exhaust gas pressure differential sensor) though I've seen a suggestion that this is normal / often happens! -

Peugeot 106 Diesel Leak 24 Dec 2003 (Forum)
I have a 1994 106 Key West 1.4D (stop laughing) that i use just for running to and from work. It seems to be leaking fuel from the pump somewhere. If I get stuck in traffic for any length of time I get smoke from the engine block where the fuel has leaked or been splashed onto it. -

Alhamra smoke 20 Dec 2003 (Forum)
I am told that this is a special heating device and "they all do it". But surely not after several minutes of running, and not so much it fills the car if a door is opened? I don't see other Alhambras billowing smoke like mine does! Any ideas on what I say to the SEAT agent? He has given good service so far, but I suspect something isn't working right. -
Noise from Primera gearstick on overrun 8 Nov 2003 (Forum)
It says on the site somewhere to expect a Japanese car to run faultlessly for five years from new, and then the repair bills start, and sure enough my 1998 1.6 has developed a behaviour to let me know it is no longer a new car. The gearstick makes a buzzing/pulsing noise when lifting off the accelerator. -
Mercedes 230E auto 30 Oct 2003 (Forum)
The car looks to be in good condition and seems to have been well looked after. The main worry is that the MOT runs out in December and I'm fearful of a big bill. I can get the car for £100 and just love the idea of smoking it for a while. If anyone has this car or knows a bit about them I would be very grateful of some advice. -
Good garage guide 22 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Is there a good garage anyone can recommend in E14 in London? (Limehouse/Commercial Road/Popular area) My CV gaiter has disintegrated on the motorway run back to London tonight and there is now grease everywhere (in the wheel arch, on the tyres and front wing). I do not have time to fix it and I do not fancy driving it back to my usual garage in Cambridge. -
Saab 95 Estate vs BMV 5 Touring 22 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Needless to say, I like driving, and apart from the load/family carrying aspects of each, want something which is enjoyable to run ! -

Peugeot 306 - flashing STOP 1 Sep 2003 (Forum)
After a gentle front-end shunt on a roundabout which did little more than crack the no-plate, the STOP light on the dash flashed if the air-con was running. The air-con seemed to work OK, but after proper investigation I found that the bump had bent one of the radiator fans, causing it to jam. I presume that triggered the STOP lamp. Anyone know if this is a deliberate function? -
Micra - starting problems when warm 20 Aug 2003 (Forum)
My local garage (ex-Nissan dealer) have tried everything they can think of to no avail including fitting another throttle housing (a second-hand one). Otherwise the vehicle runs OK. Any ideas?
