  • Traffic Offence avoiding prosecution 28 Oct 2004 (Forum)
A rash decision to carry on through a light as it changed and the car with a another family member driving was caught on camera. Since I had just bought the car and not processed the transfer the summons first went to the previous owner. He forwarded my name as required and some 3 weeks later I got the summons.
  • Vectra 2.2 Diesel Belt Change 26 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Just bought a 52 plate Vectra 2.2 DTi LS with 39500 miles. Drives very well and in very good nick. Managed to get 2nd 20 000 mile service off the dealer before delivery but they didn't change belt/tensioner as service book says. Should I be stamping feet and insisting this be done?
  • Radar detectors abroad. 22 Oct 2004 (Forum)
I don't have a radar detector myself - those who know me know I drive like a priest. However I do know that they're illegal in most of europe. If you use one and venture abroad, remember this: in France this morning someone I know has been fined 750 euros for having one.
  • pug 306td pulse signal 17 Oct 2004 (Forum)
basically the td engine is in a n/a derv, the n/a didnt have a tacho as standard and I got fed up off dodgy incorrect speedo on cable drive so I'm putting aftermarket gauges in but the tacho requires a signal, assuming the engine will be sending one as the dt had a tacho and they use the same loom. Also need to find out if it is 2 pulse??
  • London - Swansea Route Alternatives 15 Oct 2004 (Forum)
I spent from 1pm to 6.30pm to drive from London to Swansea last Friday to catch the ferry to Cork. My route was from junction 25 on M25 and then M4. Any suggestions on how to improve either the quality or duration of the journey.
  • Toyota Prius II 6 Oct 2004 (Forum)
I have just read HJ's report on the Prius II. Long term I want to move back to running an automatic but economical car to help cope with my drive to work (32 miles each way, 16 of them in heavyish traffic). Would a used Prius be a good long term car (10 years+) or would you end up scrapping it when some of the technology fails? How expensive are the batteries when they fail and how long do they last?
  • 2000 Vectra 2.0DTI Squeaky Pedals 5 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Could anyone please give me some advice on if there is an easy way to stop an irritating squeak from my accelerator and clutch? They both seem to squeak at the top when pressed and depressed. Doesn't cause any problems driving - everything seems fine, it's just a bit annoying. I'm have no technical knowledge and am wondering if I can get the WD40 out and spray it somewhere to solve this! Any advice would be appreciated.
  • Where was this car from? 7 Sep 2004 (Forum)
The nationality plate (or at least I assume that's what it was - usual oval with black letters on white) had the letters "BiH" on it....anyone any ideas? I've been driving in & around Austria for the last 25 years & this is a new one on me!
  • volvo v70 t5 good buy? 7 Sep 2004 (Forum)
hi all, i am considering buying a 1998 v70 t5,car looks a good buy, one owner, fvsh, 85k drives and goes superbly, however i have never owned a turbocharged car before and am a bit concerned about long term reliabilty as i plan to keep the car for some time, any one care to comment, would the 2.4 normally aspirated engine be a better long term buy?
  • renault scenic knock 23 Aug 2004 (Forum)
My scenics developed a knock, I think is coming from the front end, it only occurs when I'm accelerating round a corner, it happens turning either left or right, driving in a straight line is no problem. I have just come back from France having covered 1800 miles, the noise was there as we get to France but has not got worse during that time, the car is 1998 model & has done just under 60'000 miles, any ideas please.
  • Mondeo seats 11 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Does anyone else have problems getting comfortable in a Mondeo? I can get a perfect driving position in my 53 reg TDCi 130LX, but after an hour or two I start aching, shifting about and feeling generally uncomfortable, particularly around the lower back area. I haven't any back trouble, and never have had.
  • Buying Japanese Imports 9 Aug 2004 (Forum)
I am thinking of buying a nissan skyline gtr-32 and was wondering what I had to make sure had been done to the car in terms of making it completely legal to drive on UK roads. The one I am looking at has been in the UK for some time but is there anything I should look out for? All I have really considered are km/h speedos and headlights being of the correct wattage!
  • Insurance cheaper with partner added 31 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Applies to Direct Line, Admiral and Elephant, though not (for example) Morethan. So even if your other half never drives your car, might be worth putting them on the insurance just to see if it brings your quote down a bit. Bizarre.
  • Best design feature 23 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Why they don't fit these to Volvos (Ford owned of course) - it must get frosty in Sweden? -- Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
  • The 'Bangernomics' bashing thread 22 Jul 2004 (Forum)
No, not an invitation to banger racing. Merely an opportunity, in the best tradition, for those who drive brand new cars to knock those who don't. That 5 year old fully loaded Mondeo, under 3k. That 10 year old A6 Avant for under 1k. That series II that is more rust than bucket, £500. All a waste of time & money that would be better put towards a brand new 3 series & keeping a dealer in the style to which he has become accustomed.
  • Mitsubishi Space Wagon cough 14 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Just had cause to drive 700 miles in an 02 reg 2 litre Space Wagon. Cruising at a steady 80 (French Autoroute) it seemed to "cough" every once in a while: no regularity to it, could be as frequently as every half mile or as rarely as once in 5.
  • MPG for automatics 30 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I\'ve had a 1990 E30 320i for a year now and getting a bit pink fluffy dice off at how bad the MPG is, the best i can get on a long run down motorway is 25 mpg, i end up driving like a granny cause if i put my foot down the mpg goes well below 20 mpg. Is there any other car around the same size with a 2 litre engine thats automatic thats got a better MPG.
  • Pug 306 towbar 21 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I'm completely out of depth on this one: my partner has been offered a free small trailer, which would be quite handy for her business in garden maintenance/design. She drives a T-reg 306 HDi estate. Questions: is fitting a towbar a fairly straightforward DIY job or not? I realise that the electrics are involved here. If it is a DIY thing, can anyone give useful hints and advice?
  • Brunstrom joke 30 May 2004 (Forum)
Well we all know Brunstrom is a joke but this letter was in the Telegraph Saturday from a resident in his area of North Wales. Mr. Brunstrom is proposing the incapacitometer a device to tell if you are driving whilst on drugs, too tired etc. In response I propose a plodometer. This low tech device will consist of an OAP equiped with a calendar sitting in her freshhly burgled home waiting for a member of his force to arrive and investigate the crime.
  • Sadd man steals cars to clean them 8 Apr 2004 (Forum)
"A CAR thief was starting a six-year prison sentence last night after stealing 36 vehicles in order to satisfy his compulsion to clean them. Colin Sadd, 41, steals brand new cars, drives them around for a few hours and then abandons each vehicle in immaculate condition after giving it a full wash and valet service." More: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-1067073,00.html Is it April fools?
