Insurance cheaper with partner added - dylan
Just a FYI - I noticed this last year and seems the same again this year. With some insurers (the cheapest ones, conveniently), my insurance premium is around 10% cheaper if I add SWMBO to the policy. Applies to Direct Line, Admiral and Elephant, though not (for example) Morethan.

So even if your other half never drives your car, might be worth putting them on the insurance just to see if it brings your quote down a bit.

Bizarre.

I think that the theory is that men who are fearful of the reaction of their missus drive more carefully.

If he doesn't have to explain that her wheels are now in the bodyshop when he gets home then he is more reckless.

Total tosh, of course. ;-)

They probably think your partner will do the majority of the driving...:-))

She flatly refuses to drive my cars. Used to say the were "too big", until she got an X5. Now they are manual and she is "too used to an auto".

She protests that she is only on the insurances in case I beak my leg. Even then I dare say she'd ask if I felt up to driving home.

I thought the theory was basically that she's less of a risk than you, and every second she's driving the car is a second that you aren't ;)

Men who are part of a couple are less risk than single men.

That makes sense, except that they ask for my 'marital status' separately. So they know that I'm part of a couple regardless of whether my other half is on the insurance, but it's only when I add her that the quote comes down.

Not really. People can be "married" as in "not actually divorced" etc. etc. But adding your partner to your insurance is a pretty good clue.

Mark has it right (as always?). It's a lifstyle thing. Thats why adding stripes to a car can bump up the premium - indication to the attitude of the driver rather than any possible performance tweak.

Noticed the same effect with BMW Insurance a few days ago when taking out insurance on SWMBO's ageing Peugeot 205, in addition to the policy which I already have for my BMW 320d.
