  • FIAT Panda (2003 - ) - Panda ECO models 11 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Am considering buying a new Panda as a cheap run around. Fiat have now introduced the ECO versions which, if I understand correctly, differ only in the oil and tyres (low resistance) fitted but these lower the CO2 to 119 (which is good for tax and possibly congestion charge).
  • Ford Mondeo II (1996 - 2000) - 99 2.0 Strange little occasional cut-out 7 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Hello chaps I'm currently running a T reg Mondeo Si 2.0, bought on the cheap with 154k on it. Going great so far, however every once in a while I've been in slow moving traffic etc, given it a bit of gas only to find the engine's stopped!
  • FIAT Panda (2003 - ) - 06 1.2 code readers 23 Oct 2008 (Forum)
I've been looking at code readers on Ebay, to look at any faults so the proverbial wool can't be pulled over the eyes with any future faults. I know by looking at the forum the "proper" gear runs to tens of thousands. I just need basic reading, to point me in the right direction, anything OTT would go to the respective local specialist. I fancy the ELM 327 which looks like an interface which plugs into a laptop and comes with various software, or an U581 which is a small handheld scanner which reads you off the codes.
  • Volvo 740/760 (1984 - 1990) - Bangernomics, how low can you go? 26 Sep 2008 (Forum)
(obviously at 23 years old depreciation is nil, market value is only a little over scrap value) Is it possible to run a car (legally) any cheaper than this?
  • Skoda Superb (2008 - ) - I've had a drive in one. 22 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Had the opportunity for a brief drive in a new Superb on Saturday. 2.0TDi 170 Elegance with DSG. There's no doubt it's a huge car with loads of cabin space - cabbies doing regular airport runs will be queuing up for them - it will take four passengers and all their luggage easily. Agree with all HJ says, apart from ride which I found harsh on the 18 inch rims and there is no option to downsize the wheel option on this model.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 00 2.0 Water Ingress 17 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Our driveway slopes downwards and the car is parked so that water could flow from the back of the car to the front, so as far as I can see we either have one leak at the back which is then running to the front (if this is possible?) or two leaks, front and back. The local ford dealership has not been particularly helpful, they've had a hose on it and can't trace the leak. They say their next step is to strip all the seats and carpet out and turn the hose on it again (the cost will be fairly substantial).
  • Honda Jazz/Fit (2001 - 2008) - 03 1.4 Fading of Red Paintwork 12 Sep 2008 (Forum)
It is interesting to note that this pre-registered car was supplied with dealer-applied paintwork protection and has been regularly washed and polished. Still a great car, though, looking good and running like new after 46,000 miles.
  • Renault Scenic (2003 - 2009) - 03 1.9DcI worrying warning light 5 Sep 2008 (Forum)
After relatively few problems before, I'm now having a curious problem. This happens when the engine is at normal running temperature, and I've been cruising for a while (eg on a longish dual carriageway). When I come to, say, a roundabout, slow down, then accelerate hard out of the junction, I get a warning beep. The STOP light shows on the dash then goes off as quickly as it came on.
  • Black smoke under power, some do, some don't. 30 Aug 2008 (Forum)
.;) Neither of these vehicles is lacking in torque, so its not that the engines are being starved of fuel, why can some makers diesels run clean and others not?
  • Vauxhall Vectra C (2002 - 2008) - 05 1.9CDTi EML on but goes when engine started. 26 Aug 2008 (Forum)
The engine started, the light went out and the engine appeared to be okay. I went out for a drive and it runs fine, not in limp home, no smoking just driving the same as usual. However switching off the engine then turning the ignition back on causes the EML light to come on again until the engine is started.
  • Ford Mondeo II (1996 - 2000) - Diesel Life Span 14 Aug 2008 (Forum)
The tank was filled with standard diesel (not red diesel) after the fuel strike as a back up to supply the companies vans if another strike happened. It is being used to run the building generator without any problems. But Ive drained a sample off and its a dark brown colour. (There may have been some red diesel left in the tank when it was filled up with ordinary diesel).
  • When do tyres lose their edge in the wet? 12 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Batting down to the country and back this weeked in variable, wettish weather, with the old jalopy running sweetly on the cold wet air, I thought I noticed its natural understeer had become worse, with the front letting go a couple of times on tight roundabout turns. I thought perhaps I had been a bit sudden with the steering and/or allowed the tyres to lose a bit of pressure.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 1997 1.9TD Terrible Starter 11 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Now confession time........approximately four months ago I started using veggie oil (around 5/6 litres per tankful) and the car continued to run normally. About two months ago though and hearing that Lucas fuel pumps don't like the stuff, I quickly ditched the veggie oil idea. The problem I seem to be now having though is that the car is taking longer than it should to fire up.

  • Ford Cougar (1998 - 2000) - 99 2.5 v6 intermittent low rev engine hesistation 29 Jul 2008 (Forum)
When i changed the spark plugs about a month ago i noticed that 1 cylinder was fitted with a short reach spark plug. This aroused my suspicion. However the car was running perfectly so i didnt worry about it.In the past sometimes when starting the engine the rev counter and speedo needles would osciliate together and the locking mechanism could be heard clickingin the doors. On several occasions the time clock had to be reset indicating the battery was loosing charge.Anyway one morning the battery packed in so replaced it.The rev counter and speedo have behaved since changing the battery. The problem now is a hesistation or misfire at engine speeds between 1200rpm to 2300rpm.I am debating whether to refit a new short reach plug to the one cylinder or to change the H.T leads.Part of me thinks the problem could be related to the faulty battery.Any ideas???
  • Volkswagen Golf II (1983 - 1992) - 91 1.6 fast idle choke half on,. 23 Jul 2008 (Forum)
hi, can anyone please help me,. i've just bought a Golf that was running a bit fast, constantly revving, i thought the young chav that had it before me had been trying to race tune it or something, i figured it'd be easy enough to adjust the idle,. anyway, i couldn't really bring it down much so i took it to a garage where the mechanic brought the idle down a bit more but told me i need a new part, on my way home to order this part i lost my house keys which resulted in a rather hectic afternoon & i cannot remember for the life of me what it was i was supposed to order,. he said, it was like the choke was stuck half on all the time & it wasn't adjusting anymore,.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 2001 1.6 Engine Light & other electrical problems 27 Jun 2008 (Forum)
First my driver side electric window stopped working and now remains closed at all times, the the speedo started dropping to zero whilst driving (when this happens it seems power is restricted to the stereo because the volume drops until the speedo shoots back up to the actual speed i'm moving) and then the traction control light started coming on ramdomly even when not skidding (it can stay on for a hour or so and then turn off randomly) and NOW, last night, my ENGINE LIGHT came on!! The car seems to be running fine and I've topped up all the fluids etc. Do you think that its a problem or another electrical blip ?? Really don't want to fork out for a full on checkover if it just a little wiring issue.
  • Audi/BMW 20 Jun 2008 (Forum)
He is dithering because here and on other websites, there are conflicting comments on the BMW. Reports of rough rides and tyre noise with run flat tyres, door handles falling off and premature clutch failures. Trade reviews on the other hand, state that is simply the best car available in its class. He has had trouble free motoring with his Audis and although the trade reviews for both for the A4 and the A3 Sportback, which his wife would prefer, are not as glowing as for the BMW, the reports from owners tell a different story.
  • Land Rover Range Rover L322 (2002 - ) - After a 2002 RR for around 10K at auction........ 8 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Have £12K and want to try and bag a new shape Range Rover for around £10K at auction. Leaving £2K to run it for a year/repairs on purchase......always the pessimist. I have 2 questions: 1) I have not got a brochure for an early car. Are there any essential options I should make sure the car has? I guess LPG may be desirable!
  • Nissan Almera (2000 - 2006) - 53 1.5S : 5 year cambelt change & service query? 31 May 2008 (Forum)
Any input would be very welcome. I have a young family and wonder if it would be cheaper in the long run, just to look at selling /exchanging the vehicle instead. Many Thanks in advance.
