Machine parts as ornaments 1 Feb 2010 (Forum)
It's a ballrace from a fifties or sixties Jaguar gearbox, five or six inches across, weighs a good pound and a half, dry as a bone these many years, patina of rust on the outside but not in the ball channels, still runs freely but sounds a bit rough and squeaky (needs a single drop of 3-in-one and a good spin), no play or clearance whatsoever that I can feel, eight balls separated by a riveted and shaped bronze cage. -
Chrysler Voyager (1997 - 2001) - 99 3.3 Immobiliser Problem 27 Jan 2010 (Forum)
When I try to plug this back in the car makes a noise near the passenger side footwell almost like a small motor running. Can anyone help as Chrysler doesn't seem to want to know at all. If I replace the harness will solve the problem? Please help as car has been off the road for 8 weeks already. Thanks Anthony -
Honda Jazz/Fit (2001 - 2008) - 07 1.4 Dealer 'v' Indy Servicing 11 Jan 2010 (Forum)
My wife has a 2007 Honda Jazz (recently inherited from my Grandad) that will run out of manufacturers warranty in March 2010. We cannot tell exactly how long we'll keep the car and I usually do my own servicing (on a 15 year old discovery). We've never had such a new car before and I have a couple of questions that some of you might be able to help with. 1. -
Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 100k in 3 years - good buy? 21 Dec 2009 (Forum)
Hi all, Whilst window shopping this weekend, I've seen that a garage local to me has 3 defleeted, black 06 reg focus estate 1.6 tdci lx's. First of all the long shot - does anybody out there have an inkling of which outfit runs / ran a fleet of such vehicles? Secondly, they were all priced around the £4k mark which struck me as quite reasonable for a 3y old example with 100k. Recent experience with mine and my wife's 10y+ old cars seems to suggest that it is age and neglect that kills cars far more that mileage. -
Diesels falling apart 14 Dec 2009 (Forum)
I know there is a school of thought on this forum that says with a diesel you just 'service it and it runs forever'. We today I have just been dealing with a 2005 Sharan 1.9PD - car on variable servicing and turbo kaput at less than 50k miles. Last week we had a Golf of similar age with only 40k miles and turbo and DMF gone on that too. -
Morris - Minor 1380cc A plus engine - what oil ? 7 Dec 2009 (Forum)
I've been following the debate in the other thread about which oil to use in a Minor, and seeing the level of disagreement I'm beginning to question the advice given to me for my own Minor. I'm running what is essentially a brand new Minor - only just enough original parts used to keep its registration - with a freshly reconditioned A+ (Marina/Ital) block overbored by 20 thou to about 1380cc (ish). -
Which to sell dilemma - BMW or Volvo? 3 Nov 2009 (Forum)
My wife and I recently bought my mother-in-law's car (2001 MkIV Golf, 55K miles - v.clean, good runner) and now want to sell one of our 2 cars - but we are agonising over which to sell: (1) Mine - 1998 BMW 535i V8 Auto (leather seats, tiptronic, 83K miles, leather, walnut etc etc - gorgeous motor but thirsty on the juice (27-28mpg)) or (2) My wife's - 2001 Volvo V40 1.6S (not a lot to be said (!) except low mileage - also 83K). Will do 27mpg around the town (her usual run) or 36mpg (open road). We have 3 kids and 2 medium sized dogs, which the Golf will (just about) cope with - but we want to keep it as it's such a good runaround and has had the timing belt issue (which dogged the MkIV Golf) seen to at the last service. -
Vauxhall Zafira A (1999 - 2005) - 02 1.6 Overheating of front left brake disc 7 Oct 2009 (Forum)
I contacted the mechanic and he told me to leave it for an hour and try to move car then. The car did move but I returned it to the mechanic next morning for him to check out. After running it at various times over a week he did not experience the problem and I took the car back. When I returned home the car drove fine. However I left the left disc and it appeared much hotter than the right disc. -
Driving in Norfolk 4 Oct 2009 (Forum)
And signed up as "dual carriageway" and "single lane traffic only". Some anti car nutters idea of a good way to run a road system no doubt. What's the speed limit then anyone 70 or 60? And best of all you're all going to like this the gritting lorries were out gritting the roads, I kid you not. No doubt some council out after some government grant for grit or similar. -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 01 2.0 Fuel Supply Problem? 20 Aug 2009 (Forum)
I have a 2001 Mk3 diesel with a TDDi engine. I would appreciate some help please. Today, the car was running quite happily but then appeared to"misfire" and judder a bit. I pulled into a layby and tried to rev it up to see if it would clear but it didn't, only a lot of knocking noise from the engine, then it stopped and I couldn't restart. -
Vauxhall Vectra B facelift (1999 - 2002) - 00 2.0 Head gasket or not? 18 Aug 2009 (Forum)
The car was sat doin nothing for 12 months and i bought it at 124,000 Its now done 127,000 and its started to back pressure in the coolant, so seeping out water out of the expansion tank and rock solid pipes. The car runs spot on, no misfire or sluggishness, no vapour out of the exhaust, temperture is spot on as well. Ive replaced the expansion cap as these do play up, but still doin the same. Will this still be HG failure. -
Local paper campaign - using mobiles 13 Aug 2009 (Forum)
My local paper has decided to run a campaign identifying use of a mobile whilst driving. They plotted up at Wilsons Corner in Brentwood town centre (a busy double mini roundabout). They took a picture of 50 drivers in 1 hour using their mobiles whilst negotiating this tricky area. -
One month old exhaust rusting. Is this normal? 9 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Also note the rust on my bumber. There is never any water which comes out the back and I took this picture with the engine running to show that there is no problem with my emissions. I've used no oil or water in the 1500 miles I have had the car. What has caused this? I suspect it must be rain water hitting it and then rust deposits landing on my plastic bumber. -
Hyundai Trajet MPV (2000 - 2008) - Good buy / Cambelt 29 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Its a 2.0 CRDi Auto. Has leather and DVD screen to keep kids happy. Its up at 6.5K. Given their run of bad luck they are keen on the balance of warranty, but are very dissinterested in cars so have asked me to assist. Is this a reasonable buy? When is cambelt change due - thinking of haggling oportunities here. -
Volvo V70 (2007 - ) - Which £18,000 family estate car? 22 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Has anyone been through the same buying process recently and have any views on the Volvo or the alternatives? We don't tend to change cars that often, so running costs are more important than depreciation. -
Vauxhall Zafira A (1999 - 2005) - 03 2.0D P 0149 Fault code 14 Jul 2009 (Forum)
I have been to 5 x garages/workshops from main Vauxhall dealers to diesel pump specialists who have all given advice most of which is put up with the car dropping into limp home mode as it isn't causing too much grievance. Most of the time the car runs OK but drops into this mode and revs up to 2,200 when it pauses briefly before clearing and going on up the scale. I have swopped the EGR valve and manifold with a 2nd hand one which has made no difference!! -
Census on A5 causes chaos 3 Jul 2009 (Forum)
I am posting this today as yesterday I was just too angry for words. The fools that run Milton Keynes Council assisted as always by the clowns in blue who clearly have no crimes to solve set up a Census and basically closed down the A5 northbound between the Stony Stratford roundabout and the first exit during RUSH HOUR yesterday. -
Citroen Despatch (2007 - ) - 05 1.9d Intermittant engine surging woes. 2 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Evening all,my citroen despatch van has developed an engine surging problem.Whilst driving in the mid speed range & accelerating the van seems to hold back as if its hunting for fuel & you can hear a loud crack from the engine as if the fuel timing is to far advanced followed by a brief cloud of smoke,it then clears itself & the van runs perfectly at higher speeds.Im led to believe the ecu & other various sensors controls the advance/retard fuel timing on the injection pump regarding this engine.Could it be a dodgy multiplug connection somewhere or has the pump solenoid shot its bolt?. -
Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 05 1.6 Front Suspension 19 Jun 2009 (Forum)
With hindsight I realise I should definatley have got both front springs replaced and i,m presuming / hoping that this is whats causing the strange creaking / rumbling noise. Other than this the car runs loveley, the steering / brakes are spot on. Anyone got any thoughts? Cheers -
Renault Megane (1996 - 1998) - 98 1.6 RT Sport - poor idle, loss of power etc 1 Jun 2009 (Forum)
The car will run o.k from cold (most of the time) but then it will suddenly lose all power and is unable to idle and if I am driving at the time it will cut out as I slow down for junctions and then I lose the steering and brakes, which is quite scary!
