Which to sell dilemma - BMW or Volvo? - Chris on the road
Decisions, decisions...
My wife and I recently bought my mother-in-law's car (2001 MkIV Golf, 55K miles - v.clean, good runner) and now want to sell one of our 2 cars - but we are agonising over which to sell:
(1) Mine - 1998 BMW 535i V8 Auto (leather seats, tiptronic, 83K miles, leather, walnut etc etc - gorgeous motor but thirsty on the juice (27-28mpg))
or
(2) My wife's - 2001 Volvo V40 1.6S (not a lot to be said (!) except low mileage - also 83K).
Will do 27mpg around the town (her usual run) or 36mpg (open road).
We have 3 kids and 2 medium sized dogs, which the Golf will (just about) cope with - but we want to keep it as it's such a good runaround and has had the timing belt issue (which dogged the MkIV Golf) seen to at the last service.
My inclination is to keep the Beemer/Golf and get rid of the Volvo - what would you do?

I'd sell the Golf ... The Volvo is safe and ideal for carting around ankle biters both canine & human and the beemer is (to quote you) gorgeous.

Golf. Or failing that the Volvo.

The Volvo is an estate right ? Ideal for family and canine duties then. The Golf's a good 'un ? The BMW is undoubtedly a honey but a bit like Joan Collins, still classy if getting on a bit.....

Now here comes the man logic bit, stick with me it's got legs I promise.

Sell the BMW. Bank the proceeds. Keep the Golf for a while. Use it as your daily driver over the winter. Complain, only very occasionally at first, that the Golf's seating position niggles your back. Gradually increase the frequency of this complaint. By next Spring you should more or less have done the groundwork to justify a much newer beemer using the Golf as a trade in.........

Sorted !

I don't know which you should sell, but I do find the notion of "thirsty on the juice" for a 3.5 V8 auto a bit daft. I mean, 27-28mpg sounds fantastic to me for such an engine. I've had worse than that from 1.6 manuals round town.

So, scrub that, I do know which you should sell, anything but the Beemer. Keep it, it's something of a anachronism now, but a lovely one at that, and it neatly precedes the emissions based taxation...

Tend to agree with Oil Burner.

What Golf though? a 4-Motion, a turbocharged GTi or a 1.4? Perhaps a diesel, a TDi 150 or an SDi? Ok not a 4-Motion because you mention cambelt though what the Golf is is key.

Keep the BMW.
Then I would play the safety card bearing in mind 3 children and 2 dogs...sell the Golf & Volvo privately, and purchase, again privately, a Subaru Legacy estate Spec B. Plenty of room for the occupants, the security of permanent 4WD for the coming winter months, reliability and build quality. You do not cover many miles, so lowish mpg should not prove too much of a problem. Or, if you must, consider a 2.5 Outback. Both the Golf & Volvo have these perceived images which help to sell second hand, whilst the Subaru is a bit of a nonentity to most motorists, hence fantastic value second hand.
You know it makes sense.

Keep the BMW - if you look after it well you won't lose much more money on it.

If I were you I'd flog the Volvo and see how the Golf copes with your family over the next few months. If it turns out to be too small, trade it in for an Octavia or Golf estate of similar vintage.
