  • A Grand Monday: Mk2 Volkswagen Golf Driver for £750 30 Nov 2015 (News)
Both jobs will require the removal of the cylinder head and won’t be cheap. Volkswagen running gear is typically strong but this car is 26 years old now so the condition of the brakes, shocks and springs will need to be carefully checked. Especially if a previous owner has been a bit enthusiastic and decided to chop the springs or fit a huge exhaust.
  • Channel Tunnel: Happy 20th birthday 8 May 2014 (News)
In 1994 the Vauxhall Omega was the brand new kid on the block, and Citroen Xantia and Ford Mondeo last year’s old news. The thrifty or sadistic fleet managers could even still buy a new Maestro (much to future Rover CEO Bernd Pischetsreider's dismay). Air conditioned cars were just filtering down to the lowly models, in car entertainment peaked at the new CD multichangers, and a 60-series tyre was still considered low profile.
  • Report: Peking to Paris, day 11 8 Jun 2013 (News)
Driver Bob Sherrard reckons his rally is over… he wants to limp it across the border into Russia in the hope spares can be found to solve the problem, if not, then it will be going home to Australia. This great old rally car had nothing left to prove and has performed remarkably well, in a closely-fought contest with Gerry Crown’s Leyland P76. The Citroen was built by Jim Reddiex for the 1974 World Cup Rally, and with former Australian rally-champion, Ken Tubman, and language-expert and sponsor Andre Welenski on the back seat, it romped across the Sahara desert and back again, after driving deep into Nigeria and then on to finish in Munich, winning the event.
  • Peugeot Sponsors Student Road Safety Awards 25 Sep 2012 (News)
Peugeot has sponsored an initiative by Paul Kerr to introduce Student Road Safety Awards and encourage awareness of road safety among young people. Paul Kerr's son, Jon-Paul, was 17 when he was killed in a car driven by an 18-year-old who had passed his test only a fortnight earlier. The bereaved father was determined that his son's death must not be in vain and after years of campaigning and lobbying, finally won parliamentary backing for the launch of the inaugural Peugeot Student Road Safety Awards, supported by the Department for Transport (DfT).
  • Very Few Cheapies at Auction Today 20 Sep 2002 (News)
September has been much slower for new car sales than anyone thought (including me), so the expected flood of part-exchanges has been more like a gentle flow. The trouble is, everyone banked on buying September part-exchanges and, even though there are now too many buyers for too few cars, they still end up having to buy.
  • Renaults Dear at Auction Today 19 Dec 2001 (News)
Renault Financial Services had a huge section of 150 cars at auction today, but, with strong support from at least one big Renault dealer, none of them were cheap. A pair of S reg old-shape Scenic 1.6 Alize with 42k and 26k miles sold for £6,225 and £6,450.
  • Hidden Hero: Rover Metro GTi 16v 4 Oct 2019 (News)
It’s not that the Metro was a bad car - far from it, in fact, with a great engine and fun handling - but it was badly packaged, built on an old-fashioned body-shell and really quite pricey for what it was. It was competitive in its early years, but by around 1993 the cracks were starting to show, with all-new rivals such as the Fiat Punto, Renault Clio and Vauxhall Corsa bringing the supermini market bang up to date.
  • Famous faces gear up for Silverstone Classic 3 May 2017 (News)
Owners of the charismatic Austins will qualify on Friday and race on Sunday with the celebrities in action on Saturday. The cars are well-known in classic racing circles and were introduced a few years ago by the Historic Racing Drivers Club (HRDC) as a cost-effective route into historic racing. Tickets for the event must be bought in advance.

  • Cobra-Ferrari Wars, on DVD: a Must See 1 Feb 2005 (News)
I just spent an enjoyable hour and a half watching this, and it's better than most car movies. Using colour archive footage and interviwes it tells the story of how, after Angina forced him to give up winning races, handsome Texas chicken farmer Carrol Shelby took on the might of Enzo Ferrari, in a 20 year old English sportscar with a Canadian Ford pick-up engine under the bonnet.
  • New Audi Cabrio Sold Out for 2002 21 Dec 2001 (News)
Even though the new A4 Cabriolet is not due in the UK until next Spring, Audi has announced that the entire UK allocation for 2002 is already sold out. Not surprising because the car looks gorgeous. The original A4 missed out on losing its roof as the Audi 80 coupe-based cabrio fulfilled the role. However, the new cabrio is based on the classy new A4 and will come with a choice of 2.4 litre 170bhp or 3.0 litre 220 bhp 30 valve V6 engines.

  • EC Control Freaks Trying to Impose ISA on Europe 30 Oct 2013 (News)
More research into the benefits would help to reassure the public that this will improve road safety. ”Unfortunately, over a third of respondents see this as a way of controlling drivers, I believe if drivers are trained properly and have access to on-going learning, the government would not need to enforce ISAs.” Honest John feels that this is yet another example of big European component manufacturers lobbying the EC for new laws that force vehicle owners to fit expensive new components in order to increase their profits. The EC has now legislated that all new cars must be fitted with ESC. Yet we already witnessed a scandalous situation where ATE Teves Mk 60 ESC modules on millions of cars failed due to poor quality brake pressure sensors inside the modules, and owners of 3 - 5 year old cars were forced to pay up to £2,000 to have the units replaced.
  • Friday concept: Aston Martin Bulldog 26 Apr 2013 (News)
Aston Martin was in a parlous financial state in the late 1970s, when its Chairman, Alan Curtis, came up with the idea of introducing a car to outshine its then range-topper, the Oscar-India V8 Vantage . This was a shire-horse of a car – big and brutish and packing a 437bhp punch.

Adding to the carnage will be Podzilla; 1500 BHP of car-crushing monster truck madness.
