  • Car advice (2K!) 7 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I've got up to 2K to spend and am really only looking for a small runaround. I don't do many miles (perhaps 100 per week) and very few long journeys. The most important considerations for me are low running costs (good mpg, low tax and cheap insurance). Not bothered diesel/petrol but something that could pull a small trailer occasionally would be helpful. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated because I'm completely lost at the moment!
  • M6 Brum 5.00 am 21 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Is the traffic likely to be OK between 4.45 and 5.15 AM ? Or should I still use the toll. Can't afford to be late. Fairly important meeting scheduled.
  • Adios, amigos..... 18 Oct 2007 (Forum)
It saddens me somewhat to say that I'm giving The Backroom a break - for an as-yet unknown period of time. Not that my leaving is in any way important, but I just wanted to mention that it's down to what I perceive to be a 'sea change' in the tone of many contributions to this previously excellent forum. Clearly, forum members come and go all the time - but I feel that the 'cream of arrogance' has floated to the surface at the moment.
  • Warranty on Motorpoint XTrails?? 13 May 2007 (Forum)
Target price is £21400 for a UK car. Has anyone any idea what the warranty is on the 'Motorpoint' import stock? This is probably one of Motorpoint's best sellers, so there must be an HJ forum member or two out there who knows??? Also, I've seen a few reports of the turbocharger being a problem on these - anyone any knowledge on this issue?
  • Peugeot 307 Brakes Squeal Like A Sailor 30 Jan 2007 (Forum)
You know when an important sailor goes on board a ship and they blow that funny little whistle?...thats what my newly purchased wifes Pug 307 sounds like when I dab the brakes... Should I just go Kwik-Fit a new set of pads or is there an alternative?
  • Micra Converible? 1 Jul 2005 (Forum)
Saw a Green Nissan Micra convertible yesterday down in Radstock, near Bath. Was this an imported non-UK car or a special conversion? I am not saying I liked it, in fact it looked ghastly but it was certainly distictive! Other recent sighting was a 54 plate Merc SLR heading in the opposite direction to me.
  • Skoda Felicia Safety 27 May 2005 (Forum)
I was considering the possibility of purchasing a skoda felicia however i noticed the following on the car by car breakdown 'High 7 point death rate from accidents in this model' This is contary to the folksam crash test results and this post by JohnCD 'I ended up with a Skoda Felicia 1.6 with airbag and ABS. I asked HJ about strength in an accident and he approved it' Safety is important to me so can anyone tell me where the '7 point death rate' info comes from or clear up the uncertanies I have about this car. • Any dealers finding it slow ?? 17 May 2005 (Forum)
Hi All, Just registered here after spending a few days reading the messages. Any motor traders here ??? I'm a part timer, delaing in japanese imports, usually only 2,3 or 4 at a time & over the past 6 months done OK (low profits but tick along ok). This past month has been awful !! 3 cars in A/Trader this week & not ONE phone call. 2 out of the 3 are the cheapest for 60 miles & the other one is 3rd cheapest.
  • Rover 800 series 29 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Only doing about 3000 miles PA max with this so fuel costs not an issue. Don't want to keep breaking down though and power is important. Many thanks in advance for any help................. Regards
  • Is Euro II compliance still valid? 13 Jan 2005 (Forum)
I have the chance to buy a new Subaru for 2005 registration outside Europe at just over half UK list price. I plan on importing it to Europe, probably in 2006. However, although the car will be built to order in 2005 it appears it will only be to Euro II emissions grading at a time when 2005 Subarus for the UK are being delivered to meet the forthcoming Euro IV standards.
  • Nissan Murano pricing 29 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Taking the higher price, and adjusting for taxes and exchange rates (assume $1.8 = 1 UKP, VAT at 17.5% and import duty at 10%, for an overall tax rate of 29.25%): $29,250 x 1.2925 / 1.8 = UKP 21,000 Thus, not adjusting for differences in spec (I imagine fairly minor), UK buyers are being ripped off to the tune of UKP 8,800, or 42%.
  • Traffic counters 20 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Not important but one of those things I've wondered about. You know those automatic traffic counters the councils use, box at the side of the road, two rubber tubes across the road. Tyres crossing the tubes presumably cause some sort of counter to operate.
  • Buying off the Internet 18 Aug 2004 (Forum)
They seem genuine enough, and explained that they buy in bulk from Ford to get the discounted prices. Their cars aren't imports, they are 54 plates, the only mileage is delivery mileage and they come with 3 years manufacturers warranty. They didn't mention whether I would be the second registered keeper - I will need to check on this, but even still.....
  • Renault Vans 13 Apr 2004 (Forum)
Nissan Interstar £16k + Vauxhall Movano £15k Renault Master £12.5k The renault price is for a brand new factory order LWB van. How can they offer such massive discounts? I cant even find a cheaper import. (The Renault also has the best standard spec.) Does anyone know where I can compare fuel consuption figures for vans?
  • Rewiring Hazard lights on Clio 172 2 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Hi, I have an X reg., imported Renault Clio Sport 172. Currently the hazard warning lights only work with the ignition on. To pass it\'s MOT it needs to be rewired so the hazard lights are connected to the battery instead. How long should this take a competent auto electrician?
  • Escort central locking????? 6 Nov 2003 (Forum)
This of no importance what-so-ever, it is just something that has puzzled me for a while. My Escort (L reg) will only unlcok all doors from the passenger side, but once the car is unlocked - the central locking works from the drivers side!
  • Speeding (mostly excl cameras) VII 20 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Since it is not legal requirements for a cyclist to fit one, therefore it is not neccessary for cyclists to obey the speed limit but rather to cycle safely and not endanger others. So common sense and time of day and people around you are the more important factors! Chris. PS. my record is 43 in a 30mph limit!
  • Which 306 28 May 2003 (Forum)
Brother's just about to buy a 306 turbo diesel and has a choice of two: 1997 306 DTurbo, 3 door, e/w, e/s, 74k, alloys v.good condition but no ABS for £3600 or 1998 306 tdlx, 5 door, e/w,ABS,A/C,rain sens. wipers, 105k, not good condition but still drives well etc. £3700 What is the general consensus? How important are the extra miles - he loves the ABS and Aircon and doesn't mind about a few chips etc. Would be grateful for advice as the deal will happen tonight. Many thanks!
  • Golf GT TDi ABS Problem 25 Oct 2002 (Forum)
My dads Golf GT TDI 115 (RHD import from Holland , new in May 2001) has been in for its 30,000 service and the (main) dealer is reporting that there are problems with both the ABS & the traction control (ESR - presume it is something different over here?).
  • BMW New or used? 23 Oct 2002 (Forum)
THe final decision is new or used. It would appear that nearly new is not far off the same price as brand new. We have looked at imports but the price difference again is not massive and I am not sure I trust the specs. Is this a case of pay up and shut up and buy a new one? P S Any saving gets spent on the house! Meldrew (I just do not believe it!)
