  • Volvo - Volvo B20 (engine from P1800?) 125/130hp...load of 2 Jul 2010 (Forum)
What precautions do I need to take before I tkae them apart to strip them (if neeeded) or do I just obtain 2 others and ignore the ones that I have. I want to get them running for my boat and the only reason I have to keep them is that the marinising (cooling system) is special to these engines. The other option I have is to change them for two other engines that I have - two 4litre, 6cylinder Jeep engines that have advantanges like more power, torque, electronic ignition and fuel injection.
  • Vauxhall Astra H Sporthatch - boughta car two weeks ago and the paint is peeling 8 Jun 2010 (Forum)
Just bought a car two weeks ago and a couple of days after buying it I noticed the drivers door had been resprayed, runs and dribbles. So I rang the dealer where I got the car from and he said he would book it into a bodyshop and get the paint flattened but if this doesnt work it would cost me £100 for a respray on the door.
  • Electric Cars 1 Jun 2010 (Forum)
Modec electric vans (roughly Fort Transit sized) and trucks appear to be quietly gaining favour in cities. I could see a lot of two-car households running an electric car as a second car - given a reasonable purchase price, in the future. And I'm interested to see how the close cousin of the pure electric car, the range-extender hybrid (e.g.
  • VW Passat 1.9TDI 130bhp 05 model (B5) - Flywheel - Dual Mass or Solid ? 28 Apr 2010 (Forum)
Saving on price initally sounds great but is it a false economy ? (69000 miles on the clock, and I intend to run it for another 2 years avg 22000 per year)   Thanks for reading
  • Mazda 6 - Mazda 6 TS EGR System 18 Apr 2010 (Forum)
Now the dealer says that there is no vacuum at the EGR valve and they cannot trace where the problem is and have given up on it.  So I am at the stage where I take the chance and run the car with the light on or sc***e it.  Mazda Customer Service (when they eventually answered the phone) were dismissive and unsympathetic saying the car is outside it;s warranty and so they don't want to know It has always been serviced by Mazda, is a 05 with 70000 on the clock.
  • Honda Civic UK 1.6 auto (N reg) - Radiator cap breaking and coolant loss 18 Apr 2010 (Forum)
No idea if the rad fan is working as I popped the bonnet when I got home while the engine was still running and it wasnt spinning.  Any pointer of what to look for would be appreciated. Thanks
  • A voluminous discharge of salt 3 Apr 2010 (Forum)
If every resident went out and swept up their own pile from the `overkill` an inch deep on bends, they could apply it themselves when the Council has run out, next Winter. Yeah, I`d just washed the subrames and had to do it again. Beware of heading West from Tingley
  • Vauxhall Vectra B facelift 1999 2.0 16v automatic - Stalling /erratic idle /engine management lamp 2 Apr 2010 (Forum)
When the (hot) engine is started it will not idle - until driven a short distance.  However, most of the time the car drives smoothly etc and runs properly.  The idle air control valve was replaced by main dealer less than a year ago.  Any help & advice greatly appreciated?
  • Mitsubishi Outlander II - Rear disc corrosion on 2 year old car 22 Mar 2010 (Forum)
the 2 year old car has just had its annual service and now completed 22000 miles, it is used daily for a mixture of short and longer runs and has been fine except for a loose handbrake which despite frequent tightenings has been a problem the service have checked the rear brakes and confirmed that the discs externally have corroded and that potentially the internal corrosion is the cause of the handbrake issue.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 02 1.8TDCI Kangarooing!! 3 Feb 2010 (Forum)
This was duly replaced (Ford part) at a significant cost but the issue still remains. The computer no longer shows the error but the live data shows that the engine is running at -5c when first starting up. I presume it is this reason why the car is experincing the issues. Could it be the engine collant temperature sensor? Something simple as the fuel filter? Main dealer are asking for rather alot money just to plug it in!
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 00 1.8 Spark plugs 2 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Should I fit new plugs with the 4 cores and would that give me better mpg, perfromance etc over standard ones? The car starts and runs fine at the moment. And should I adjust the plug gap to 1mm? Reason why i want to change them is I will be be doing a full service on the car so may as well have everything done.
  • Mitsubishi Carisma (1995 - 2004) - 97 1.8 MOT Failure 1 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Now to my problem, I drive a 1997 mitsubishi carisma 1.8 petrol and my car just failed its MOT on "lambda reading after 2nd idle outside specified limits" I have beed told by the mechanic that it might be a lambda sensor or a catalic converter!!! The car is running perfect in every way, it is got 135.000 miles but the engine is fine, no lock of power, no misfire just a month ago "check engine" light lit up for a minute and then it never showed up again!!! I am thinking about changing lambda sensor becaouse I don't think it is a catalic converter!!
  • Do we need more 4x4 commercial vehicles? 15 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Vans seem to have been having particular trouble in these slippery conditions - whether they be rear-wheel drive or front-wheel drive. 4-wheel-drive versions of some vans are available - e.g. Ford Transit, VW T5 Transporter. Despite the extra purchase cost and running costs, having a few on the fleet could make all the difference in weather like we've had lately. The same goes for larger goods vehicles - a 4x4 two-axle 18 tonner would be able to keep going where 4x2's are defeated.
  • Toyota Avensis (2003 - 2008) - 06 1.9 Diesel/steering problems 13 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Additionally, engine noisy very when cold, maybe injector noise - dealer says no problem detected. Am I just unlucky or, as the warranty runs out in January, should I get rid of this car asap? Also, just found out on this forum about head gasket problems with this engine. Does anyone know how widespread this problem is? If anyone can give me any feedback on any of these issues I would be very grateful.
  • Jaguar X-Type Estate (2004 - 2007) - Warranty not honoured 12 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Jaguar dealership, in all instances as reported above, refuse to honour the Jaguar warranty which has 6 months to run on this 2 1/2 year old heap of rubbish. Due to the alarm sounding at least once in every hour, car taken to Jaguar dealer who could not repair the car, did not have a loan/hire car, and suggested that I remove the fuse for the horn.
  • Buying my first car - need advice 6 Jan 2010 (Forum)
What other models, years, specs, etc. should I consider? I'm willing to spend more on the car if its worth it in the long run regarding economy and problems etc. Thanks very much for your help! Barry
  • Ford Fusion (2002 - 2008) - 03 1.4 Water in top mounts 26 Dec 2009 (Forum)
The offside one obviously has been doing this for ages (we've only had the car for ~2 months or so) and is very rusty. I've tried putting tapeing a plastic cover over it to see if its running off the underside of the bonnet but that didn't work. Thought about filling the hole with 3-in-1 oil, but don't want to lubricate the bolts loose! Could seal it with something - but suspect at some point suspention might need doing - cause of rust?
  • Toyota MR2 (1990 to 2000) - 91 2.0 Engine temperature in cold weather 23 Dec 2009 (Forum)
My suspicion, based on absolutely nothing, is that the sensor is reflecting the outside temperature more than engine and when I slow down and there's less/no rushing air, it goes to normal. Is my car about to blow up? Any ideas? It seems to be running fine... oil topped up, coolant at normal levels... etc. etc. Confused.
  • Renault Laguna (1994 - 2001) - 98 1.6 MOT failure on emissions at natural idle 27 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Neither the lambda sensor nor the catalytic converter are showing as faulty. It has been for a fast run to burn off any deposits and taken into the garage fully warmed up. The Renault specialist garage seem to just want to write it off but it has only done 111k miles and in all other respects is fine.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 99 1.8 Speeedo drops to 0 & stall when slows (drop 26 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Morning, I recently bought the above (Zetec) from auctions. This morning was my first real run out in it (10 mile trip to work) Was traveeling along at about 70-75, when speedo dropped to 0 (for what seemed an eternity, was probably 10-20 secs) before coming back to life - rev counter/fuel & temp gauge all remained correct.
