Ford Fiesta diesel or petrol - Second hand car for daughter learning to drive. 22 Jan 2013 (Forum)
Her driving will mainly be in and around town...longest journey 15 miles...and little motorway driving. Looking at running costs it does seem to me that a diesel will be cheaper tjhan a petrol.......lower road tax, lower insurance, better mileage per gallon but obviously more expensive per gallon etc. Servicing will be done by me. -

Peugeot 405 Diesel - boost issue 17 Nov 2012 (Forum)
Hi , I think i have a boost leak , the kick off the turbo is less pronounced than it used to be and when running at around 3000rpm with foot down , i`m getting a hissing noise with engine slowly increasing revs, at 2200 - 2500 when the turbo kicks you can feel it but it seems to lose what boost it had up to 3000 when the hissing noise becomes very much noticeable, i have a feeling it is the turbo to intercooler hose that is the suspect and would like to replace it soon but cannot find anywhere who may be able to supply a replacement, rubber or sillicone , if anyone knows where i may obtain one or for the time being repair it all advice would be appreciated , i am unable to get to the back of the engine or under the car at the mo as i`m waiting for my axle stands to be returned , thanks in advance , simon -
04 Renault Espace 2.2dci - Low Compression - any ideas? 6 Nov 2012 (Forum)
Hiya, my bf's Espace has been running a bit rough for a couple of weeks now, sounds bad at idle and low power at low revs. He took it into a garage yesterday and they performed a leak off test and compression test, with the diagnosis that it has low compression (150 cyl 4, 250 cyl 2+3 and 300 cyl 1). -

I currently run an 04 Hyundai Santa Fe 2.0l CDi which I've owned from new. I do not need 4WD and the boot is now too high for one of my dogs to jump into. I will have a very limited budget c.£1500 so accept that I am looking at older vehicles. -

Surely sign changed since 1985 . -
Ford Focus 1.8 Ghia, 52 plate - Kerb damage... 12 Aug 2012 (Forum)
Main problem is a severe scraping/ grinding noise as soon as the car starts moving. The wheel seems to run true when jacked up and turned by hand but obviously it becomes a very different situation when there's weight on it, and I haven't tried rocking it. Any ideas as to what issues I should be looking to expect to deal with? -
Ford Focus v Volvo S40 - which to choose? 3 Aug 2012 (Forum)
I like the way they both drive, the Focus probably having the edge in terms of excitement (let's face it you'd never call a Volvo exciting would you?) but the S40 feels like a solid motor that you could run forever. Both have approx 28k miles and are immaculate. Anyone have a view on the better motor? And any particular known issues I need to look out for with either car? As a slight aside I know the 1.8 variant in the Focus has been around for years but do Volvo make their own diesels or buy them in? -

Landrover Discovery - Any ideas for a bigger, rugged family motor? 18 May 2012 (Forum)
Also, the 9-3 is a bit of a squeeze with 2 kids, pram, scooter, etc., so more room is essential. As are reasonably manageable running costs. We want to stay well below the £10,000 mark. I had looked at the Discovery 3 as we love the way it looks, but have been put off by rumours of poor reliability and expensive bills. Not to mention its thirst. -
Want A Quick, Economical, Sporty Car[£5000 Budget] 5 May 2012 (Forum)
Therefore, BHP should be less than 150 / engine size less than 2.2 The only cars I can find are Astra 3DR SRI, Volvo S40 2.0D Sport, Saab 9-3 Sport, Focus Sport, Fiat Punto 1.9 Sport etc.. I am running out of ideas. I would therefore appreciate any suggestions. I look forward to your replies. Thanks! -
Peugot 306 diesel - Bad starting 8 Apr 2012 (Forum)
This has been driving me mad, has slowly got worse over the last two years. Car runs fine does around 50mpg and starts OK (but not great) when warm. Is the last of the non HDI versions - Y reg . Has adelphi injector pump Its is really dependant on temperature as to how well it starts. -
Citroen C1 - Citroen C1 Vibration 31 Mar 2012 (Forum)
So much so, if you have the door open, and rev it up, when the revs come back down, just before it hits idle, it will vibrate so much the door wobbles. The car runs really well, there are no problems while it's being driven, just happens when it's sat on the drive. It seems as though something is off balance. I've done all the usual, taken off the injectors one by one. -
BMW E46 - Spark Plug Coils - One down all down! 27 Jan 2012 (Forum)
Alas with one dead coil it could not be replaced just itself without the ECU taking an outright dislike to it! All four were replaced and it now runs like new. Question: Why can't just the one be replaced and is this a problem on all cars nowadays? They were originally replaced under warranty so have probably only lasted 60k miles. -
Volvo V50 or Audi A4 Avant? 26 Jan 2012 (Forum)
Which car is the best all round drive - we are after decent low speed drive and good mid range punch - like the golf. What are the petrol units like in either? Dont fancy the running costs on a Volvo T5 or audi 2.0 TFSI but the costs of the 2.4 petrol Volvo or 1.8 T A4 seem to be more acceptable........ -
The would you swap game 2 Oct 2011 (Forum)
This game isn't purely about value of the car, you could see veyron but the fuel and insurance would be prohibitive for most of us. You've got to be able to affotf to run the new car your imaining swaping for. I tend to find round Surrey way i'd swap for about 40% of cars in car park. I think thats pretty good, and that my car suits my needs. Finances allowing is this a good model to tell you when to actually get a new car. -
vectra ls di - power issues 28 Sep 2011 (Forum)
she starts first time, no engine knocks, absolutely no smoke,no oil leaks, shes a bit juddery some times when first moving off,but if she has a bit more throttle is fine, how ever when shes going up hill she seems to lose power , unless she has a fair run at it first, but then usually by the time i head for home she doesnt lose power any where near as much. has anyone any ideas what could be wrong? i've read some of the forums on the egr valve and her symptoms dont seem to match. i'm female so any comments in plain english would be appreciated!! -
Mazda MX5 1.6 - intermittent engine cut-out 10 Sep 2011 (Forum)
One day my 1996 Mazda MX5 Monaco (that's the options-free economy 1.6 model) will do a faultless 500-mile round trip and the following day it will break down every 300 yards. The engine will just stop running whether it is ticking over or on the move. The rev-counter needle will drop to zero instantaneously accompanied by a big fat click emanating from somewhere behind the main instrument binnacle directly in front of the driver. -
Smallish estate for under £4K? 2 Sep 2011 (Forum)
I'm after a practical estate car, I dont do more than 5-8K a year and only want an estate for its practicallity and ability to occasionally do dump runs and pick stuff up from wickes. I ride a motorcycle for fun and to get somewhere fast, so I'm more focused on economy with the car, that said I dont want to torture myself with it. I'm stuck on diesel (like the low road tax) vs petrol and the following makes. -
Vauxhall Zafira 2.0 . - A.B.S warning light intermittant problem 30 Aug 2011 (Forum)
I have joined so i can post a topic and maybe get some sound advice as i have encountered a small problem from my abs warning light on my dashboard, the light sometimes comes on when i start the engine, it wont go out when all other warning lights go out after a few seconds, the abs light will stay on as long as the engine runs. I have tried this little trick and it seems to work, well at least until i start the motor again after not driving the car. If i get the light come on from a start , i turn off the engine and then re start it, the light then goes out?????
