Rover p6 V8 Engine troubles 25 May 2004 (Forum)
I have a 1971 Rover P6 3500 auto, which has had some engine troubles lately. It started to run fine from cold, and when you stopped at a junction or set of lights didn't stall. As soon as the engine had warmed up and you stopped - it stalled even with the choke out. It then started to use a lot of water and when the engine stopped there was a lot of pressure under the radiator cap - and steam escaping from the breather hose. -
Rover 214Si Coolant 19 May 2004 (Forum)
The Haynes manual graphically describes how to replace the coolant but my car does not have a bottom drain plug on the radiator nor does it have the vertical filling point on the top hose. I assume to drain the engine all I need do is remove the bottom hose and let it run free, I am more concerned about correctly refilling and avoiding airlocks. Should I buy the special to type top hose or is there another hose I can free to fill the engine and also bleed the air out. -
VW Sharon 2.0CL for 3.5K 29 Apr 2004 (Forum)

Cheap motoring? 21 Apr 2004 (Forum)
Dear All, I\'m toying with the idea of keeping my motoring costs down by buying a car from auction, running it for 3/4 months and then selling it on to break-even or make a slight profit. This way I am unlikely to be troubled by servicing or MOT costs (although I might be visting the post office for car tax frequently). -
Mondeo 2001 Petrol poor starter 8 Apr 2004 (Forum)
I ran it for a few minutes then tried starting it a couple of times, it was fine. I took it out for a run and ut drove fine. Should I book it in under warranty? What would Ford look at? Is this a known problem or would Ford fob me off? Its a 2001 manual with 16k 2L petrol. Cheers, Jim. -
Toledo TDI power loss 2 Apr 2004 (Forum)
Hi everyone, We run a year 2000 Seat Toledo TDI 110 Red eye. On driving the car today, after 4 miles, the engine suddenly lost power akin to the brakes being applied and staying on or loss of Turbo. The car was gutless but drivable. -
Cash v Co.Car Calcs 25 Mar 2004 (Forum)
The calculators I have seen assume you either have a co.car and you're about to switch to cash or you don't have a car at all. Can anyone add to this list of costs attached to running my current vehicle? Insurance Reg. Servicing Allowance for repairs Allowance for consumables (tyres mostly) Road tax Estimate of depreciation through age/mileage Tax paid on cash allowance Tax not being paid as BIK I've not included fuel as there won't be much difference whether I drive my own or a co car. -
am i insane? 5 Mar 2004 (Forum)
I currently run a Seat Leon Cupra, and very nice it is too (recommend one to anyone). I have an 80 mile round trip, 4 days per week, plus social stuff, to give context. Recently, I have been finding myself increasingly lusting after Porsche 911's, particularly a silver 964-shape Carrera 2 (be about a 1994). -
change of life (male - late) 26 Feb 2004 (Forum)
From being cossetted in a comfortable small limo with rather gutless performance, I'm now rejuvenated (at age 61) by the A3. What a handsome, rewarding hatchback - exciting and returns over 40mpg, even on local runs. After rear wheel drive, this is so sure footed (canna wait for next snow!). So comfortable, too - the seats are firmer, shaped. Better stop there. Just to say: I enjoy my motoring much more now, and (hey) am much happier person! -
PSA oil pressure switch 14 Feb 2004 (Forum)
I've replaced the switch (and topped up the oil) because I could see oil seeping out next to the single contact on the switch body with the connector off and the engine running. Now, I've had oil pressure switches fail before on Citroen CXs but I've never heard of them failing on an XUD engine. This is confirmed by the local Citroen dealer who hasn't heard of a failure either and the parts wizard doesn't keep them in stock. -
Mondeo Starting Problem 3 Feb 2004 (Forum)
It causes a grinding noise under the bonnet near what used to be called the distributor (Of course this appears to be a sealed unit) 3. Silence (Nothing happens at all) Up to now the car has eventually started and it runs normally with no problem at all. At the suggestion of Honest John I have changed the leads but this has not solved the problem. Can anyone help. -
Sierra starter motor 12 Jan 2004 (Forum)
The solenoid can be heard clicking as it should, have connected another battery to eliminate a power problem and am running out of ideas. The ring gear on the flywheel looks alright, tried turning the engine over by hand to get onto a different bit of the flywheel, and am still left with the impression that the motor is not engaging with the ring gear. -
Fiesta 1.25 slightly lumpy tickover 6 Jan 2004 (Forum)
(Ford ones) Strangely enough, the car performs perfectly otherwise - accelerating and cruising without missing a beat! Also, for the last 5 years, I've been running the car on Costco Chevron fully synth oil , changed every 3000 up until a few months ago when I thought I'd give the Ford stuff a try... Any clues?? -
Smell of petrol - Fiesta 26 Dec 2003 (Forum)
It seems that if you remove the air cleaner and sniff the top of the carb it smell's quite strong, but maybe you would expect that. I'm told there are no washers etc. to change within the carb. Run out of ideas.......anyone come across this before? Be grateful for any suggestions (other than leaving the window open or parking in the street). KB. -
ABS activating when not braking ! 20 Nov 2003 (Forum)
No difference; and the wiring pin looks OK. Do I have any choice other than letting my local Nissan dealer run a diagnostic check on the system. -
Educate me. 30 Oct 2003 (Forum)
I would like to increase my education in the world of vehicle electronics, increasingly during my working life I am coming accross more and more problems involving the electronics on modern cars, what with remote locking and sat nav antenna's attached to screens, electronic auto function door mechanisms and the like, and more and more complicated multiplex on the way. Do any of you guys and gals out there know of any collages that run a course along these lines, ideally a part time course that can fit in with my work. I do have an ONC in electronic engineering from when I left school in 1989(which really needs a good brush up), but talking to my old tutors from that collage, they didn't know of any off the tops of their heads. -
BP Ultimate 25 Oct 2003 (Forum)
In case anyone's interested, I have now done three full tanks of it and the results look extremely good (summarised below). I happen to think that the car *does* run smoother with the higher octane fuel but that is subject enough to be meaningless. The figures however, speak for themselves. Average fuel economy over three tanks each: Regular Shell Unleaded (95 RON): 33.8mpg Shell Optimax (98 RON): 37.1mpg BP Ultimate (98? -
Problem with Polo immobiliser? 19 Oct 2003 (Forum)
This happens repeatedly until usually, it will finally start after about 20-30 minutes. When it does start, the car runs fine. It happens about once a week - otherwise it starts without any problem. I took it to the VW garage and the mechanic said it sounds like the immobiliser is kicking in, although he said that no faults have been logged in the memory. -
New car? 6 Oct 2003 (Forum)
I know there are other, less flashy alternatives, but i\'m led to beleive that the beemer is the \"driver\'s car\" choice, which is what i\'m after as opposed to out-and-out luxury. So gentlemen (and ladies), your thoughts please? Particularly: 1) performance/handling 2) running costs 3) reliability (remembering for the sort of money i want to spend (3-4k, it\'ll be the wrong side of 100k miles) 4) will people really think i\'m a pink fluffy dice ? -
ATF Leaks - Ford Sierra Auto. 4 Oct 2003 (Forum)
When the car is fully warmed up the ATF leaks at an alarming rate out of a small opening on the underside of the starter motor. As long as I keep topping up the ATF the car runs fine but obviously this is only a very short term solution. The starter motor is about 2 years old and works fine. I don\'t want to replace the starter motor only to find that it isn\'t the root of the problem.
