That's my weekend ruined 24 Oct 2003 (Forum)
One of those roadmarking wagons decided to drop part of its load in the middle of the road. Everyone had to drive (slowly) through it. Result being that my sills, front doors and wheelarches are now spattered with white paint. Plan of attack tomorrow is to tackle paintwork with turps soaked rag and plastic wheelarch liners with a brillo pad. -

Am i really risking it? Can i drive in a way that will safguard the belt breaking? Should i be using the car at all? many thanks MG -
VW Passat Problem 20 Sep 2003 (Forum)
I have a 1999 1.8T Passat and I've been having a problem. When driving up a modest incline, with the engine around 3000rpm, I start loosing a bit of power. If I put my foot down the car will accelerate but not smoothly. I'm pretty sure it's not the turbo, to me it feels like the HT leads and sparks need replacing. -
150bhp"barely adequate"? 9 Sep 2003 (Forum)
It's been suggested on another topic that 150bhp in a large saloon is a barely adequate amount of power. I drive a Saab 95 base model that happens to have 150bhp, does 0-60 in about 9secs. and has a top speed of around 130.This is better performance than most family cars and small hatches. I consider this perfectly adequate performance and wonder why anyone should need more? -
mini mpv's,whats the point? 8 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Having recently become a dad,and have the ever increasing need for space in my car,i've been looking into the mini mpv market ie zafira, piccaso, scenic etc,and for the life of me can't understand the concept of these vehicles as they offer no more space than a decent sized estate and are extremely dull to drive. Am i missing something here or are manufacturers just following suit? -
immobiliser? - Rover 214 2 Sep 2003 (Forum)
I have a 214 cabrio 1997. I takes around 10 tries before it starts and then conks out. It also conks out whilst driving. My garage said that probably the immobiliser is defective and need changing. he also said that these cars all suffer of this defect. This costs around 600 pounds. Could it be possible that something else is the problem??? -
Semi automatic handbrakes 31 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Just been driving a Renault VelSatis, the hand brake puts its self on when you turn off the engine and releales when you start to move off, if you want to put it on for a hill start etc. you pull a switch to the right of the steering column, then pull off and it self releases, I can't help asking my self, "WHY"? -
Will Somebody Please Enlighten Me? 27 Aug 2003 (Forum)
1: You go drive into a car park, pick a spot miles away from everyone else, & lo & behold when return to your car, some half-wit has parked right next to you...? 2: Just seen a full frontal pic in last weeks Autocar of the new 5-Series, taken from low down... -
driver education 23 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Ok, It's nearly the holiday weekend. We are all familiar with the Xmas 'dont drink and drive' publicity machine and the summer holiday 'speed kills' campaign..but.... What other motoring 'offenses' would fellow back roomers like to see targeted on a TV ad campaign, the above two are excluded. -

Andromeda 3 Aug 2003 (Forum)
A car magazine tested it & were asked not to give it full throttle off the line otherwise, due to the enormous torque it produced, the wheels might disintegrate! Driving moderately, they still reached 100mph in around 8secs... -
Insurance and owner of car 26 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I am getting big quotes for my wifes 1985 Polo when I am a named driver, due to 3 accidents in 3 years (21/2 no fault of mine). She owns the car its in her name, can I drive it on my car insurance (Mondewoe)as a car not owned by me with the owners permission, as it states in the insurance docs, or as the spouse am I cosidered an owner? Mercedes 4 speed Autobox 12 Jul 2003 (Forum)
When the selector is in "2" the car starts in first and will not change into second at any speed. However when "2" is selected whilst driving, it changes down to second and changes down to first when I stop the car. It then starts again locked into first. And it would not kickdown from second to first. Otherwise the transmission is excellent - quiet and smooth. -
Sporty Little Number 14 Jun 2003 (Forum)

I'd consider anything up to about 5 yrs old. Am I asking for a bit too much for £5K. Anyone have any suggestions? -
91 Astra 1.4i Merit 24 May 2003 (Forum)
Hi This beast has developed what can only be described as a screeeeeching noise mainly at low engine revs which goes once on the move and engine rpm> 2000 . It sounds alternator vicinity ish - is it safe to run with alternator drive belt removed (apart from obvious danger of discharging the battery) for fault finding purposes. If it is alternator bearings which I suspect is this a feasible DIY option? Cheers NormanB -
"Photocards" 22 May 2003 (Forum)
I've never seen this Matrix thing, I can't tell you what a J-Lo is, but more importantly, I've become dimly aware that there is talk about a driving licence with a photo on it. Mine doesn't have a photo on it. It's a bit of green paper. Have I missed some dreadful edict that means my licence is no longer valid or something? -
spark plug noise 21 May 2003 (Forum)
When the engine is running I\'ve noticed a clicking sound coming from the engine, in the area of the plugs that I took out. Have I over tightened one of them or just not put the leads on correctly? The engine seems to drive fine no other problems. Any ideas? -
Nissan Sunny Electric Fault 9 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Hi, I've got a problem with a J-reg Nissan Sunny in that when you press the brake peddle, the sidelights come on. Haven't seen it for myself yet, not my car, but the only solution at the moment it to drive with the sidelights on! Any idea what could be causing this? Owner says she also hears a click when she presses the brake peddle. Relay perhaps? Regards Mike Farrow -
Car Wars - double standards? 20 Mar 2003 (Forum)
On tonights programme the coppers book a guy for using a mobile phone whilst driving. Fair enough. But they also send out pursuit coppers on their own, and during the pursuit the driver is on the radio to base, both hand held radios and 'telephone' type. Is it OK that they are allowed to do this, especially whilst on a high speed pursuit in an unmarked car, but any other driver proceeding at a more sedate rate, isn't?
