  • W124 Mercedes 1500km review 16 Mar 2010 (Forum)
For a 22 year old straight six with mechanical injection, that's astonishing. Everything works - including the leak-free sunshine roof and the memory seats, the automatic gearbox oil looks like it was changed yesterday, and in 1,500km the engine hasn't consumed a single drop of oil - which is always a comforting indicator on something of that vintage. • Is owner informed if car is made Cat C ? 1 Jan 2009 (Forum)
It stated that because it was listed as 'Cat C' we would need to carry out a VIC check. (Vehicle Identity Check). I also now understand that if a car is 'Cat C', you don't automatically get a tax reminder. This made me think that the original third party insurers had made by wife's Citroen ZX a 'Cat C' write off. Surely, if an insurer declares a vehicle a 'Cat C' write off, they have a responsibility to write to the owner / registered keeper to tell them?
  • Toyota IQ (2008 - ) - IQ - my thoughts 26 Nov 2008 (Forum)
VSC/TRC - No 17. power door lock - Yes 18. keyless entry - No 19. power windows - Yes 20. toneau cover - Yes On the premium addition 1. automatic air condition - No 2. smart entry (boot and doors) - No 3. push start - No 4. rain sensors - No 5. dusk sensors - No 6. electric retractable, heated door mirrors - No 7. electrochromatic rear view mirror - No 8. front fog lamps - No 9. high gloss 15" alloys - No 10. darkned bi-halogen headlamps - No 11. chrome rear light clusters - No What really scared me were the rear seats - no boot therefore no crumple zone and the rear seats didn't look to be constructed in a manner which makes you safer in a rear end smash (unlike the smart seats) - rear seats almost touch the rear window.

  • Audi A4 (1995 - 2000) - Possible purchase. What do you all think? 15 Dec 2007 (Forum)
A local bombsite trader (think of a bad-tempered Turkish Bellboy without the wit) has a RHD Audi A4 Avant that he´s taken as a PX, and is going to find difficult to shift. No market for RHD here in Germany, and it´s still on UK plates. It´s a late ´96 2.6 V6 automatic, fairly high spec. Bad bits: undocumented 115k miles, no service history at all (book is missing). Needs new tyres, plus I think the thermostat has gone as it didn´t move off 60 deg during my test drive, the panel under the engine is cracked.
  • Volkswagen Golf V estate (2007 - ) - - first impressions 29 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Gearchange is a delight - I went for a manual partly to save money partly as I can control the revs and minimise turbo lag. DSG is good, but I still think for a diesel automatic you need 2.5 litres or more. Ride / handling compromise excellent - much better than any of its predecessors, especially the lovely direct steering response. For normal driving I don't think it's inferior to the benchmark Focus or even a BMW.
  • Prius v. diesel Verso 12 Dec 2006 (Forum)
Silly spoiler and steeply-raked rear window makes rear vision difficult. Nasty foot-operated parking brake. Verso - More lively than the Prius: automatic available only with the petrol version. Diesel engine quite subdued, much quieter than the B-class (faint praise!). 6-speed gearbox (excellent dash-mounted gearlever) so very good on motorways.
  • MR2; R.I.P. 26 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Could I legitimately claim for storing it on my own property, a garage of course, would levy a charge automatically? Anything else I could claim? Finally should I send the bill for uninsured losses directly to the idiot, 'uninsured' implying my insurance company would not wish to know? ---------------------------------------------- One mans junk is another mans treasure
  • Small car, really sensible advice needed 10 Jul 2003 (Forum)
All round value for money - purchase price and insurance plus running costs. Neither of our cars are at all suitable for her as they are both large automatics. He has a company car but commutes by train. I have a car and do less than 10,000 miles pa - so our costs are already quite high, and our cars get little use. She is a 19 year old, unemployed student, who will be commuting by train for at least a year from September, so her mileage will be extremely low.
  • BMW 5-Series E61 Touring (2004 - ) - 25,000km report BMW 530d 9 Jun 2009 (Forum)
I actually think this level of fuel efficiency is amazing for a 1 1/2 ton six cylinder 240bhp car with an automatic gearbox. The first service is looming in a few thousand kms. Up to now the engine has consumed around 1 litre of mega-expensive long life oil. I am always a bit uneasy about these long life service intervals offered by BMW, but as long as they are happy meeting any potential warranty obligations then that?
