  • Mondeo TDCI fuel inj needs calibration? 13 Apr 2010 (Forum)
My fuel consumption is 39.48 mpg (brim-to-brim but the trip computer states 46mpg) with the lowest at 28mpg (driving 2 miles to and from work within the congestion zone in London) and highest at 46mpg (driving up to and touring around Scotland). I felt the excess smoke and poor economy is due to over-fuelling of the injection system.
  • Vauxhall Astra H estate - Driving technique for a small diesel? 1 Apr 2010 (Forum)

  • Mirrors - novel useage 16 Mar 2010 (Forum)
I already set my mirrors so as not to show any of the paint on the car, but only just. 5. Maybe it's because I drive an estate car. Maybe it's because I'm used to using my wing mirrors more than the average car driver, having spent a lot of time driving vans with no rear view. Anyway, downright dangerous.

  • Isuzu Trooper (1992 to 1998) - 96 3059 ABS G Sensor 27 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Breakers don't seem to have them, Isuzu parts say that, at best, they are on a three month back order from Japan, and the thing does not appear fixable. Obviously, this takes the ABS off-line when it fails (which is during the driving off self-test, 100m or so from setting off) There are odd mentions of these failing on other imports (yes, I have Googled). Does any listmember have a suggestion as to what I can do? Driving backwards rapidly, then braking sharply seems to clear the fault, which points to something inside the switch, rather than the cabling, as does the fact that the ABS fail light will come typically when the vehicle has moved off the horizontal, sometimes even slightly.
  • Nissan Micra (1992 - 2003) - 00 1.0 Strange Juddering 26 Jan 2010 (Forum)
So we thought we would just swap it all over. Put it back together and it started on the button, we thought it was fixed. Then after driving to work, the car started juddering at any speed (with the Engine light temporarily lighting) I had another look at the car this morning and started to reverse some of the work, to find the dodgy part
  • Chrysler Voyager (1997 - 2001) - 99 2.5 electrical fault 15 Jan 2010 (Forum)
My car drives for about 20 miles then the ABS & alarm set lights come on & all the dash indicators stop working but it will still drive perfectly but once I stop the engine it will not start for about 2 hrs & even then I have to hit the top of the dash board before everything comes on.

  • New car? Rover has come to the end of the road... 8 Dec 2009 (Forum)
I have a natural scrooges fear of depreciation, hence the banger... We also use an 05 Golf TDI which is lovely to drive, however that will go back to girlfriends brother in March. Driving that for the last 2 weeks has made me fall in love with diesels again.
  • The trunkating of mechanical adventures 14 Nov 2009 (Forum)
You could possibly drive around the world in some cars now without opening the bonnet. The adventure would all be external to the actual car. But there was (at least in memory) a certain pleasure in the ultra fine detail of the car itself.
  • Head gaskets are they now weaker? 6 Nov 2009 (Forum)
New thermostat and 22,000 miles later no signs of any head gasket failure, his engine is the Ford Endura which is an iron kent block. So why do head gasket failures seem so common now? Is that people are just driving their cars with the needle in the red without realising the water pump has failed or something?
  • Nissan Qashqai (2007 - ) - My QQ is OK 4 Nov 2009 (Forum)
I picked up my QQ 1.5 Pure Drive DCI Accenta in early August this year and have clocked nearly 3000 miles and so far not had any probs. 6 gears took a little bit of getting used to but soon got the hang of it. 6th gear 80mph all day if it could and approx 49 mpg ain't at all bad for the size of the car.

  • Vauxhall Corsa C (2000 - 2006) - 02 1.2 ECU needs repairing 29 Jul 2009 (Forum)
I've got a 2002 easytronic Corsa (u can drive manual or auto) and I've had the flashing 'F' happen periodically meaning I can't start the car when this happens. First had the fault codes read by a local garage and they couldn't find anything (this was Tuesday) and they said that it was probably a fluke, and Tuesday nite, on attempting to go home from being out - I couldn't start the car again.
  • What's your favourite body style? 27 Jul 2009 (Forum)
As, well.... boring..... as the estates but less useful really. I understand small hatchbacks. Useful, cheap, often fun to drive. Large hatchbacks can be OK but why not have an estate? They do more. I've had MPVs. Astonishingly practical but if you have an ounce of enthusiasm about driving they will ultimately disappoint.
  • MPG - How much is your banger costing you? 20 Jul 2009 (Forum)
I've done the stats for my Corsa and I am getting 42mpg which is calculated from a pure city run sample. I do like to rev it a bit but I do avoid braking and drive very smoothly which is why I am probably getting a good MPG rate. My dad also drives smoothly but gets 12mpg less (his engine has lots of problems). So its all very well saying my banger costs me £500 a year in repairs (dads Fiesta) which is a lot cheaper than buying a new car but what about the fuel costs?
  • advice needed on neighbours disabled parking bay? 19 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Hi All i awoke up this morning, took a yawn as i drew back my curtains only to find that a disabled parking bay has been placed outside my neighbours house.not a problem BUT it overlaps my property which i privately own.Now they do have a drive , as do i,but they choose to park their caravan on it! i have contact the relevant peeps about this and they say they are not removing it as the occupational therapist has suggested they have it.i have tried to find out about the laws of the location of these such bays but can not find out whether they are legally allowed to use part of my parking area in front of MY house or is it that the road is simply the councils property and that they can do what they want with it. i know that they have had this done in spite as they like to have both of their cars in front of their house without having to park in front of their own drive with a caravan on it.....in case of an emergancy holiday i persume ;o) now i dont like to argue over such things as parking spaces but this has made me so cross to use part of my parking outside my house where my hubby parks his van and is now unable to do so because they are greedy!

  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 03 2.0 brake problem 17 May 2009 (Forum)
It gets that bad sometimes it makes the whole car vibrate. Can someone give me some sort of clue. Could it be a drive shaft ,or wheel bearing, or something as the passenger side drive shaft has been clonking for about 14,000 miles now. It only makes a noise when suddenly putting the accelerator down in 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th gear; not 1st and 2nd gear.
