Police pursuits in general 21 Sep 2007 (Forum)
my view is that: -training should be 'top dollar' and not fudged as it can be now, often due to cost - the equipment has to be top dollar i.e. the pursuing cop has something that is adequate to catch up again should they wish to back off and give the offender the opportunity to slow a bit (often not the case due to half baked equipment.... but that is what is taught) - tactics need to be reviewed (as current tactics of terminating the pursuit if too dangerous or pursuing until there's a crash or chased vehicle runs out of fuel) means determined crooks will just drive like idiots when they've committed a crime, hoping the cop will either get called off by ther control room or the cop calls it off themselves. Control room staff can often be civilian staff and not know the pressures of the cop. -
UK car market and tax changes 10 Aug 2007 (Forum)
It's got me thinking - the UK market (outside of the company car tax regime and all its various changes over the years) has never been hugely influenced in the past by tax levels in terms of the cars bought (beyond cars that are heavy on fuel being expensive to run). Now that there are both car tax itself and if required residents permits rated quite exponentially on CO2 emissions can you see the market moving more to what used to happen in France that effectively a car with much more than a 2.0ltr engine was very rare indeed. -
Proper 4x4s 29 Jun 2007 (Forum)
However is trail rated. Can wade at the same depth as the Terracan (we have a Ford just up the road from us). Good fuel economy though, at 42.2mpg Jeep Commander - If it drops in price a little Isuzu Trooper - again a fullsize 4x4. This would be as a seocnd car. The 3.0DT. Don't know much about them though Mitsubishi Shogun Mercedes ML Then there are the obvious pickups - Hilux, L200, Navara, etc... -
I've turned it upside down 20 May 2007 (Forum)
t want to spend more than £5k (tempt me) (or the missus is really getting the N plate 205(saved on the car but spent on the divorce, what, what?)) Given the miles, I can stand the fuel, but not interest in anything that needs ?special? attention (means more than once a month checking fluid levels, annual service, half a brain) So the down side, my garage is a bit pokey 4.6 by 2.3 (but 3.8 by 2.3 and I don? -
2003 Mondeo Diesel dropping revs 25 Jan 2007 (Forum)
also, when towing my caravan, if I put my foot down too hard on the motorway the glowplug light comes on and the car drops to a crawl until I pull over, stop the engine and restart. I've tried Wynns fuel tank cleaner and injection cleaner (for diesel) which I've always sworn by, but no difference Thanks in advance Stuart -
Ford KA 2003 Misfire...pls Help..EUC?? 12 Jan 2007 (Forum)
pulling any of the others of and it nearly dies. so I swapped the plugs round, and the leads. still the same . I carried out a compression check and all was well also, I then removed the fuel rail and swapped over no 1 and no 2 injectors, still the same problem, just on no2... there is a real healthy spak on this so the coil pack looks like it is ok. I took it to a friend and he was no 100% what the problem was, he could not get a decent reding out of the star tester, he talked to someone and they said coil pack fault can mess up the ECU, so you will need both! -
Rover 214 Engine Stalling ? 24 Dec 2006 (Forum)
This humming noise is not usually heard coming from the petrol pump after a normal key-on procedure, so there seems to be something different in the fuel system at these times. I have noticed at the last time I filled the car with petrol, that there was a hissing sound as I removed the petrol cap. I am wondering whether there could be a blocked vent somewhere which is causing a partial vacuum to develop. -
Toyota Yaris Queries 5 Oct 2006 (Forum)
and this model any advice would be much appreciated 1/ If i bought a diesel one and if someone had filled with petrol could it suddely fail- pumps injectors etc- say 6-9 months down the line???. Is there any tell tail signs that to look?? for eg round about fuel lines, tank that would indicate its been removed to drain petrol. 2/ Does this model have a particle filter and diesel addive that has to be changed after so many miles and if so what would the costs be and at what millage should the filter, fluid be changed at??? -
MPV or estate car for 2+3 family 30 Jul 2006 (Forum)
We might actually keep the 406 as it's reliable and well-maintained. Whatever we go for it will have to be a diesel - the fuel economy is important. We are currently doing about 12000 miles a year and I don't change cars often (every 5-10 years). I don't really care about it being a bit on the slow side - I'm past all that now and comfort and reliability are much more important (yawn!). -
Time for a new car. Please advise. 26 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Other info: I mainly do short runs of approx 5 miles a time, plus the odd 100 mile each way journey a couple of times a month. Safety is important. Quality feel is important, prestige brand isn't. Fuel economy of 30mph + would be good. I prefer an automatic Room in the back for 2 pre-teen children Will probably lease and spend approx £350 a month, perhaps a bit more for the right car. Or buy nearly new on a loan and make repayments of a similar amount. -
Mystery smoke - 1992 rover 827 v6 8 Apr 2006 (Forum)
The exhaust smells of exhaust (and yes it will give you a headache) A couple of lesser known suggestions I came across on the web were either having a worn out fuel filter and water in the tank, although surely white smoke would come out all the time. Alternatively it could be the car sucking auto transmission fluid up from the box, but wouldn?t this be seriously toxic and also surely it would continue all the time the car was running? -
New Call for Metric Road Signs 3 Mar 2006 (Forum)
The report says there would be many benefits from converting road signs to show kilometres, metres and km/h (kilometres per hour). These would include drivers getting consistent information, easier calculation of fuel consumption and speed limits more finely tuned to local road conditions, it says. But the AA said a changeover would take far longer than five years and the Department of Transport said it had no plans to convert. -
2005 Defender LWB 25 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Heater controls, exactly where they should be, again dead of night after birthing a 100 lambs in the snow test - perfect. Speedo, fuel, temp guages and a clock, spot on. The thing had a hand built quality. A heater fan that actually blasts and de-fogs, washers that work (wipers that would grace a Morris 1000), I love this truck. Another LR change its actually smooth at 60 on a Motorway, people keep away "who is this fool in a new Landie ?" -
Frontera diesel low idle + stall problem 20 Oct 2005 (Forum)
All the usual tests have been done and everyones scratching their heads. People are starting to say maybe its not a fuel supply problem. Just to emphasise here - there are no day to day starting problems with the vehicle. Pleeeeeeeeese can someone help as we're at our wits end with the only scenario sell it with a hidden or known fault or pay a blank cheque to an injection place who will guarentee to diagnose but it might take 10 hours plus @ £42 per hour then plus the parts to fix. -
Which soft-top toy ? 16 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Its only going to be a toy, so it would be a waste spending serious money. It needs to be a 2+2 - which rules out all of the usual suspects. Don't care about fuel consumption, don't care about resale value, don't care much about performance. Do want pretty, do want fun, do want a little cred. I don't regard a Rover 214 Softtop as the sort of thing I'm looking for. -
Next car - any recommendations? 30 Jul 2005 (Forum)
Motorway tends to irritate me in the saxo as I get stuck in the inside lane so something with some acceleration would be a bonus. What I'm after: Acceleration Fuel Economy Cheap to insure (under £700 is the preference) Fun to drive I'm looking to keep this for a few years, so realistically, something with low mileage would be a preference. I did look at a Bora 1.8 130 PD, but in all honesty, I fear if I get that, I may kill myself pretty quickly! -

1980 Mini 1000 - Running far too rich 26 May 2005 (Forum)
Whatever we do it seems to be running very rich, and although it will start, it dies again once its warm leaving all the spark plugs soaked in fuel. I have the following kit: Exhaust bits from Mini Spares: Manifold Std bore exhaust long centre branch Large inlet manifold for HS6 drilled + plug for servo S/Steel side exit DTM twinpipe S/Steel downpipe LCB to rear box Plus K & N cone filter & HIF 44 carb Pipercross cone filter & HS4 carb (currently in the car) Someone suggested I just ditch the cone filter and re-fit the big air box filter, but others run their cars using a cone filter so I am sure its not impossible. -
