  • Ford Focus Saloon - X Reg - Fan belt snapped - What other damage? 3 Dec 2010 (Forum)
Driving home as usual, when battery warning light came on. 1/2 mile later engine management warning light, then immediately after that , the  "terminal" engine warning light.  I was on a busy red-route approaching a roundabout  and could not pull over safely, so I nursed it another 400 yrds to an exit and stopped in a driveway.

  • PEUGEOT 406 Hdi 90 HP - FRONT SUSPENSION STRUTS & COIL SPRINGS 27 Aug 2010 (Forum)
I'm just wondering if there is any truth in what the garage are telling me that the car should lower itself in a few weeks or are they palming me off, why should there be such a gap, the cars appearance has changed & looks odd, though it drives & handles OK. Thanks for any replies, Tonyredz.
  • Are all German car seats hard? 20 Aug 2010 (Forum)
My father in law had a Golf and we also hired one to do a long journey in once and they both had hard seats. We went for a test drive in a Skoda Octavia 4x4 and after half an hour we couldn't wait to get back in our Freelander. We changed my wife's car recently for a new Skoda Fabia and as that is only used for the daily 15 mile each way commute it's not too bad.
  • Renault Laguna II (2001 - 2007) - 03 1.9dci fuel injection after EGR valve clean 18 Aug 2010 (Forum)
When driving it almost feels like the car has very little power to what it had before i cleaned the egr and takes a while for the turbo to kick in. then when aproaching motorway speeds it splutters a little and a message appears on display saying "fault in fuel injection" and then continues in limp home mode until the engine is switched off and back on again which clears the fault untill were back up to speed where it happens all over again.
  • Toyota Yaris - Toyota Yaris - belt whine at idle? 12 Aug 2010 (Forum)
I thought this was probably OK, as the car has just (250 miles ago) had a large service at a main Toyota dealer, and the timing belt and bearings were replaced, along with a few other bits. It's done 61,000 miles. However, the whine hasn't gone away after a few hundred miles driving. I've had a look at the engine, and all looks OK, but I don't know much about Toyota engines - I drive an old Porsche 944! Can anyone suggest anything I can do to cure the problem? Or am I just being too fussy and is that a normal noise?
  • Astra 1.7 LSTD, 1997 - Help - Sounds like a sewing machine! 23 Jul 2010 (Forum)
It speeds up when revs increase.  Its most noticeable on idle, but probably just drowned out by normal engine noise when driving.  Sounds like a bearing failing or something rubbing. Had a new cambelt, tensioners and water pump approx 3-4K ago.  Took cam cover off at weekend and ran car but no sign of anything wrong there.
  • Legality of UK rental car with no MPH indication 17 Jul 2010 (Forum)
I am curious as to the legality of what Hertz did, hiring me a car in the UK which was unable to tell me whether I was driving within the law. Hertz claim there is no issue with it, I dispute that, but want to find some solid (preferably direct legal references) backing for my view (assuming I'm correct). Can anyone help out with legal references or other information about the legality of this?
  • Audi A6 Avant - 2.5 TDi Auto losing power on gradients - help! 13 Jun 2010 (Forum)
For some time I have been worried as the car will not go up anything remotely resembling a gradient. It will drive very well, quietly and at high speeds on a flat motorway. However, as soon as we get to a gradient the speed starts to drop. I have tried to clean the engine out with 2 tanks of diesel with a cleaner additive.

  • Mondeo TDCI fuel inj needs calibration? 13 Apr 2010 (Forum)
My fuel consumption is 39.48 mpg (brim-to-brim but the trip computer states 46mpg) with the lowest at 28mpg (driving 2 miles to and from work within the congestion zone in London) and highest at 46mpg (driving up to and touring around Scotland). I felt the excess smoke and poor economy is due to over-fuelling of the injection system.
  • Vauxhall Astra H estate - Driving technique for a small diesel? 1 Apr 2010 (Forum)

  • Mirrors - novel useage 16 Mar 2010 (Forum)
I already set my mirrors so as not to show any of the paint on the car, but only just. 5. Maybe it's because I drive an estate car. Maybe it's because I'm used to using my wing mirrors more than the average car driver, having spent a lot of time driving vans with no rear view. Anyway, downright dangerous.

  • Isuzu Trooper (1992 to 1998) - 96 3059 ABS G Sensor 27 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Breakers don't seem to have them, Isuzu parts say that, at best, they are on a three month back order from Japan, and the thing does not appear fixable. Obviously, this takes the ABS off-line when it fails (which is during the driving off self-test, 100m or so from setting off) There are odd mentions of these failing on other imports (yes, I have Googled). Does any listmember have a suggestion as to what I can do? Driving backwards rapidly, then braking sharply seems to clear the fault, which points to something inside the switch, rather than the cabling, as does the fact that the ABS fail light will come typically when the vehicle has moved off the horizontal, sometimes even slightly.
  • Nissan Micra (1992 - 2003) - 00 1.0 Strange Juddering 26 Jan 2010 (Forum)
So we thought we would just swap it all over. Put it back together and it started on the button, we thought it was fixed. Then after driving to work, the car started juddering at any speed (with the Engine light temporarily lighting) I had another look at the car this morning and started to reverse some of the work, to find the dodgy part
