My daughter's Citroen AX has just developed a huuuuge amount of side-to-side play at the gearlever. Push forward for third and pull back for reverse. Driving it is very simple, if a little hard on the clutch. Any views on what I might find tomorrow? I'm guessing a selector rod in the linkage has dropped off. What do you think?

We had an ancient Citroen C15D van that developed this fault - it was a linkage that ran parallel and just next to the bulkhead that had come off. It was just a push fit back on, but it fell off again soon afterwards. After repeatedly burning my arm on the exhaust reattaching the thing every few days, and not wanting to spend any money on a van that had over 400,000 miles on it, we used a couple of cable ties to keep the linkage attached. This lasted about six months, and then we grudgingly spent £19 on a new linkage from Citroen.

My son's Pug 106 had similar problems with the linkage. The (non-Peugot) garage changed the 2 rods. I think the parts were about £40. I would imagine that the AX is similar. The garage said that it wasn't the first they had done -----
His was an L reg 1,4 diesel.

Yep, it was the short transverse rod immediately above the exhaust. Unfortunately this is the one that drops off when it fails so I secured it with a spring to the other transverse rod; it's a deadful bodge but I think a cable-tie would soon wear through owing to the rust on the rods. Greased up the other ball & socket joints and the 2 pivots and it changes very sweetly now.
