  • Nissan Almera Tino - Car stalling out 1 Mar 2017 (Forum)
Nothing looked rusted, loose, or worn enough to cause it to stall, nothing came up on diagnostics. The battery is fine, the fuel line pressure was fine, nothing seemed clogged.  I had the heating running on the 15th and 18th, not on the 17th. Today when I was driving it there was a lot of hot air coming from the windscreen vents but I left the fan and heating off.
  • VW Scirocco 2.0 TSI DSG 2009-2010 - Car choice advice please!! 10 Sep 2016 (Forum)
Hi all, I am going to buy a used VW Scirocco and have narrowed the search down to 2 cars, however I would really love some advise on which to get. here are the two links: https://www.gumtree.com/p/volkswagen/vw-scirocco-2.0l-tsi-dsg-excellent-condition-low-millage-/1185604740 https://www.gumtree.com/p/volkswagen/vw-scirocco-2.0-tsi-dsg-/1183092251   They are similar age/milage, they also both have full VW service histoy and almost immaculate MOT history. logic would therefore suggest to go with the cheaper, however there are a number of reasons not to: 1. the cheaper one has hidden their registration suggesting something to hide, he did give it to me in order for me to check the MOT. pictures are also limited and not very good, he has admitted to a very small dent hear the fuel cap (quoted at £80 to repair) 2. Very judgemental but the driver of the cheaper car seems a bit "boy racer" with a whatsapp username of "BISH BASH BOSH" and a picture of him and his mates covered in tatoos.
  • Nissan Qashqai 1.5dci - Cold start problem 4 Sep 2016 (Forum)
The one time I called the RAC out, it stalled twice in front of them and after hearing the knocking noise he said that was the injectors, but also said there has been a previous code on the car with the fuel regulator (apparently marked as fixed) being at fault, so it could be that.   Any ideas?
  • ford focus estate tdci - plug in tuning boxes 8 Feb 2016 (Forum)
I drive a Focus estate 1.8 Tdci, so im no performance junkie, but what made me sit up and take notice was the advertised 10% improvement in fuel economy and promise of smoother running, eliminating flat spots and bogging down, which my car seems particularly prone to. The fact this device is supposed to boost BHP from 115 to @135 isn't as important to me as the fact that this box should lead to a better running more economical car.
  • Mitsubishi Shogun Sport - Towing problems 19 Dec 2015 (Forum)
I came off the motorway and the rev's went to 6000, I paniced and turned the engine off as I thought it was going to blow up, it was rolling down a hill and wouldn't start again but then started once I had stopped at the bottom. The car went back to the garage I bought it from who believed air had got in to the fuel system, they contacted me to say everything was fine with the car.  I have since used it in everyday driving and also towing.  On Sunday 17th April, I noticed the rev's were idling at 1500 when usually it idles just below 1000.
  • Mitsubishi Outlander - VAG 2.0 engined outlander losing power 4 Sep 2015 (Forum)
it's due a service in a month or two, so I can ask them to check the fault code. It seemed to me possibly fuel starvation, I wonder if I had a blockage which cleared. Also the car is used by my wife as a local runabout, I should the think the 1000 miles of peage may have done it some good and given it a good clear out.
  • Mazda 6 2006 diesel - White smoke problems 26 Jun 2015 (Forum)
I communicated this development to the trader who sold the car to me and he poured 2 cans of BG244 fuel additive to a full tank of about 60 litres and said we should try that out. Its been about 2 weeks now and the problem keeps reoccurring. Like I said, the white smoke stops when the car is driven for about 10 miles on the motorway.
  • Honda Jazz Mk 1 (2006) - Immobilizer problem 12 Jun 2015 (Forum)
All in all the RAC man spent over two hours working on the car, plugging a laptop into it and trying to reset the fuel cutoff (which was fine) but he concluded by deciding it needed a new key. There is a safety recall to do with a door switch.  Could this have interfered with the ECU/immobilizer in some way?
  • '98 Fiesta Ghia 1.25L 16v - Engine struggling to run 13 Apr 2015 (Forum)
IVe checked all around and ive still got a full compliment of oil, and water/coolant. theres no smoke or steam and no smell of petrol. Theres no leaks or bits of metal anywhere so im certain I've not fragged it. theres still fuel to the rail even after 4 days and several starts. This time it struggles to run. Basically, I start the engine, it starts fine but then it keeps dropping to around 250 rpm then back to normal idle then immediately back to 250 rpm. this is constant.
  • Volkswagen Passat CC 08 - Is this even right or what? 5 Feb 2015 (Forum)
To check the final value of the consumption I have  filled up to the max and I drove a 100 miles and after I refuelled to max again. Then I calculated the fuel consumption and it was 28mpg for the city.  At first I was told it is bacuse of the DPF filters. Some "very clever" guy has offered me to remove it for £400. Obviously I said no. Then another guy said yeah the filter is clogged, we need to get it cleaned.
  • 2003 Renault Megane 1.4 16V Petrol - Megane II 1.4 16V Idle and starting problem 3 Feb 2015 (Forum)
I have replaced coils, plugs, TDC sensor, coolant temp sensor and cleaned the electronic throttle body twice and even ran some Cataclean through the fuel but have not managed to resolve the problem. My code scanner has found no codes in the ECU and therefore I have no idea where else to look. My only thought was the throttle body O rings may not be tight enough and there could be an air leak?
  • BMW 116i - BMW 116i 2005 Wont Start 6 Jan 2015 (Forum)
Long story short I got my car back and had a recommended mechanic to look at my car and it was actually contaminated fuel.   He treated this and replaced the crank shaft sensor also the battery as it was not holding its charge and the computer says ready to start?
  • Noe - A quick and detailed oil analysis test at home 8 Dec 2014 (Forum)

  • Citroen Saxo (1997 - 2003) - 96 1.5d Flat Start 14 Nov 2014 (Forum)
I have also checked the temperature sensor which the post heat timer works off and this gives no resistance reading when cold but when hot I get a reading although can't remember exactly what so I am guessing this is also working fine. I'm not too familiar with diesel engines and fueling but I take it the white smoke is down to unburnt diesel getting into exhaust manifold and then being ignited there? I'm now stuck for suggestions so all help welcome. Moved into its own standalone post - The original post can be found below http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?
  • Skoda - Any suggestions a next second hand car please? 1 Jul 2014 (Forum)
My husband and I both have back problems and now edging 70s  My VW Golf GT Tdi is brilliant on fuel and was purchased second hand.  We now need to get a replacement as we are both 'tumbling' out or finding back ache on long journeys so a more raised seat would be so good. I would appreciate any advice on what has worked for some of you.
  • Toyota Auris 2010 - TR 5dr 1.33 VVT-i - Carbon Build EGR Valve after 4 Years 8 Apr 2014 (Forum)
It shouldn't be so coked up after 22k and 4 miles. All they said to me was - tut, tut you shouldn't get your fuel from supermarkets, but Esso or Shell. Cobblers. Esso + shell may have more detergents in the premium stuff, but the standard isn't much / any different from supermarket. It all comes from the same tanks / source - ie.
  • Volkswagen Golf Plus - Teething problems sell or not to sell 23 Feb 2014 (Forum)
Hi all I'm new to the forum I bought this 55 plate vx golf plus new mot etc drives lovely it's only 105 bhp but still goes ok however after buying it I noticed on the mot advisory there was a oil leak but i didn't notice until I bought it the car drives spot on I've taking it to a mechanic as when I have a different car I always give it a service oil.timing belt etc he put it on the ramps and said it looked like the oil was coming from the back of the rocker cover but iphe took it off the ramps and told me to get rid of it but didn't give me a reason it was like he didn't have time saying that it was a Friday afternoon this car is 140000 miles in. got part service but no sign of belt etc all that don't worry me. if the turbo is on its way out is there anyway of telling this should i take his advice not service the car and move it on but I really like the car and don't mind spending service money on it a couple hundred pound some people tell me these engines are the best ones to have also the fuel gauge works some times not at all times anybody know or have had this problem any find would be much appreciated and thanks in advance I really want to keep this car but as with all my cars I want them right thanks Carl

Now i work for a Mercedes dealership and speaking to the tech guys i should avoid semi autos, even audis great DSG gearbox, and CVT gearboxs.
  • Fiat Ducato 2.5 TDI, engine cutting out 3 Oct 2013 (Forum)
During a 100 mile journey yesterday the engine cut out on two separate occasions, each time the symptoms were as if I'd turned off the ignition i.e. the ignition controlled functions went off as well as the fuel cut-off, but both times everything restored within two or three seconds without any intervention on my part. Fortunately both times the problem caused awkwardness but was not life threatening; however as it has happened twice it is likely to be reoccurring.
  • Small, petrol engined automatics - poor economy 1 Sep 2013 (Forum)
Before I discuss this I should state I was using only the trip computer as my guide and this resets at each fuel refill and secondly the driving was an odd mix of short, traffic laden urban trips and longer highway journeys (these usually five up).  Air-con was on the whole time I should add. What was clear was that even on motorway journeys starting immediately after a fill up, I could not get the consumption to be better than about 36mpg; and this was driving at no more than say 60mph.
