  • 1.2TSI DSG - DSG hesitancy - is this right? 19 Apr 2011 (Forum)
All, We're looking to replace our thirsty 2006 X-Trail 2.5 auto with something more fuel efficient, either MPV or soft-roader. We went to look at the Skoda Yeti last Saturday - lovely car, although the demonstrator was the 1.8TSI manual, and we're after an auto. So the dealer provided a test drive in a Roomster 1.2TSI DSG, to get a flavour of that engine and transmission, also available in the Yeti.
  • Ford Fiesta 1.25 - Unstable / wobbly engine or wheels? 13 Apr 2011 (Forum)
I thought it was dirty injectors, having used various injector cleaners like Redex and other  fuel cleaners to no avail.  I tried these having had spark plugs and HT leads checked. It turns out it was coil pack related, which has now been recently replaced.  However I now feel when under acceleration, the engine seems flappy / wobbly.
  • Audi A3 Sportback - Low diesel MPG - is it me or the car? 11 Apr 2011 (Forum)
So without majorly changing my driving style, is it unreasonable to expect the MPG to be better on the Audi? Or do I have to 'relearn' to drive a diesel?  I'm worried I've gone backwards in terms of fuel economy... I've read that on the internet that the wobbling at idle when its warm might be the injectors. Is there anything else I should look out for?  Or am I better off going straight to the garage with an open mind?
  • Ford Mondeo - Mondeo Mk2 - Stalling and bad perfomance when cold 2 Apr 2011 (Forum)
You can hear the engine turning and some times almost fires but i'm guessing it's not reaching the right mixture of fuel and air. When the problem started it was intermitant at first but it now happens every time the car is used from a cold start. Any ideas what it could be would be much appreciated. I had a Mk1 mondeo that had the same problem and Ford charged me £300 to change the thermostat and still had the problem when I got it back!
  • any - 80 mph limit on motorways 20 Mar 2011 (Forum)
incidentally last week went from carmarten to west london 210 miles 3 hours 10 mins roads eerily empty between 10.15 and 1.30 in the day. fuel cost seems to have stopped a lot of driving and slowed down lots of people too. But 4 of us went by car, cost  46 lites in diesel round trip, train fare would have been £67 each + 2 underground tickets zone 9 @£11 each so far cheaper for us to drive,
  • Citroen saxo 1.4i auto - Sluggish acceleration problems 8 Feb 2011 (Forum)
The car runs perfectly in idle and when you dip the throttle in neutral there is no hesitation or misfire, only once you've put it into drive (put load on the engine) and try to pull away does the fault become aparent. It has a multi point injection system of which I have removed all the injectors and fuel rail and cleaned them all, but i'm sure if these were the problem it wouldn't run ok in idle, I have also removed the throttle body and all the accompanying sensors, and cleaned them but still to no luck.
  • Peugeot 106 - 1997 Peugeot 106 1.5 Diesel Suspected Air Leak 29 Jan 2011 (Forum)
Also the cold start advance lever on the Pump is hard over to the right in the cold start position. This afternoon I decided to prime the fuel pump with the priming ball, and it fired straight away on 4 cylinders despite being cold. So I suspect an air leak, does anyone know if there's a common failure point on this engine? i'm thinking along the lines of Injector Leak-off pipes but apart from that i'm a bit stuck.
  • Suzuki Wagon R+ 1.2 - Vibration under load/misfire 17 Jan 2011 (Forum)
It does have a pattern part exhaust section which sounds a bit throaty, not sure if that would cause such an issue. My instinct was its either a fuel delivery issue or a sensor, but I may be way off and I dont know enough about modern engines to be any more specific. Any good clues appreciated :-)
  • VW Passat - VW Passat power reduction 12 Jan 2011 (Forum)
It has done it on and off since new but it is more frequent now. The car has done 146,000 miles but is still quiet, fuel consumption is good and performance - when the problem is not happening - is good. It can happen in the following conditions: When cold, no warning lights - only recently started doing this.
  • 1989 ford escort 1.6 CVH - Engine trouble 23 Nov 2010 (Forum)
(Not everyones cup of tea i know) The car sounded and drove pefectly for the first 100 miles of the 110 miles home, however in the last 10 it missed a few beats whilst on the motorway, it felt as though it was running out of fuel and It also began to sound tappety. Also the lights went very dim, as if they were on sidelight when they were not. Now when I parked up I turned it off and then tried to start it again and it would not turn over fast enough to start (as if the battery had gone flat).
  • Zafira 2002 1.8 - Strange power loss on motorway - left curves only! 27 Oct 2010 (Forum)
As the petrol swills to the right side on left curves, the left pipe loses supply and the right pipe, being blocked, can't compensate, hence temporary fuel shortage on prolonged left hand curves. But then  I took it to my local mechanic and he told me that the Zafira only has one supply outlet from the petrol tank, and if that was blocked, it wouldn't go anywhere.
  • Vauxhall Corsa D - 05 Corsa 1.4 16v auto/08 Corsa 1.2 semi auto? 20 Jun 2010 (Forum)
Option 2 is at Motorpoint and is £6,299 but they want £175 over 42 months after which there'd still be £2,300 or thereabouts balloon payment. However, there is the benefit of the latter being (presumably) cheaper to run owing to better fuel consumption, lower insurance, etc. I've tried and failed to find direct comparisons - any opinions on which would be better? Personally I think the new shape looks much better but that's a poor reason in itself :) so if anyone's driven both and/or can advise generally I'd be pleased to know!
  • Nissan Leaf - the car to drive the recovery? 18 May 2010 (Forum)
£23K for a mid-size hatch is dear of course, but personally I just cant get the 100 miles for £1 running cost out of my head. Especially after the once-a-week £60 pain I feel visiting the forecourt. 1 years fuel costs for me is approx £2700, or the price difference between the Leaf and a conventionally powered rival, which would probably depreciate much faster than a Leaf too. Here's the rub though, for this hugely promising vehicle to take hold, it absolutely needs the Fast Charging points to proliferate quickly.
  • Peugeot 307 - Peugeot 307 head gasket 29 Mar 2010 (Forum)
So far I've got: water pump, timing belt, head bolts, head gasket, thermostat, (haynes manual says to replace high pressure fuel lines, but is this necessary?) Also says that the timing belt needs to be tensioned with some electronic tensioning tool. Never used one of these before, so is this necessary (i might be able to borrow one), or is there a cheaper way to get the right tension?
  • Owning a diesel auto - how it feels? 22 Mar 2010 (Forum)
Not decided on specific car yet, but Kia Cee'd seems to be a good candidate (AFAIK, it is a normal auto - not DSG) Other than remembering to fill correct fuel in the car, what other things I need to do differently compared to manual/petrol cars? Is there any habit which is good/ok for petrol/manual but bad for diesel/auto? I was going thru Kia Cee'd manual, where I found the advise that after heavy load on engine (eg. motorway driving) one needs to leave the engine running for 1 minute before switching it off (to cool the turbo).
  • Toyota Yaris (1999 - 2005) - 02 1.4 diesel cutting out 23 Dec 2009 (Forum)
By the time I got home it seemed to be pulling absolutely normally, so the only thing i can think of is waxing fuel. This seems unlikely though, as the other car (07 Honda CRV) parked next to it, filled from same pump, set off no problem. Any suggestions as to where to look? Left it parked in the garage overnight, so we'll see whether it gets me to work in the morning.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 01 2.0 Strange Judder ????? 12 Dec 2009 (Forum)
(I did decide it was not a good idea to drive it home because of this) I didnt really get into any other gears as i could only drive it in a small car park so couldnt tell you if it like it all the way through the box. Now im thinking maybe something to do with fuel???? Also as it got up to temp it was (i would say) very smokey!!!! Has anyone go any ideas at all??? Any help would be great. Thanks
  • Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 95 2.0 GTi electrical fault 4 Nov 2009 (Forum)
hi there, i'm new to the site, i have a 1995 mk3 golf gti 2.0 8v engine code agg i recently parked up the car over night and returned the next morning to find it would not start although it was cranking, got plenty fuel getting to engine but found no spark, changed the obvious coil but to no joy so changed crank sensor, dizzy cap and rotor arm, still no joy, all relays are correct and present. after some head scratching and testing i found that the 3 pin connector that goes to the distributor was at fault as all 3 wires had a 12v feed, the brown/blue wire is earthed when ignition is off but becomes 12v when ignition on, this appears to incorrect, i put earth using power probe when cranking and it started, but i'm stumped as to where the feed comes from so i can find the fault, is it an internal fault with engine ecu?
  • Volvo S40 (2004 - ) - 06 2.0 Starting problem 20 Oct 2009 (Forum)
The car then would not start at all, and was towed to the garage, outside warranty. It had the "sludge" cleaned out of the tank and a new fuel pump. This would have cost over £1000, but Volvo met 60% of the cost and the dealer the rest. Sadly this has not cured the problem, and the car is still very unreliable when starting. I am about to book the car into the Volvo dealership again (for the fifth time) but really have little confidence that they can fix it.
  • Peugeot 205 (1983 - 1997) - 86 1905 Puzzling Mi16 cold idle problem HELP! 6 Oct 2009 (Forum)
For some reason it isn't getting the right signal to turn on or off. Coolant sensor was changed and this did not affect anything apart from increase the fuel consumption so I've put the old one back in. Coolant sensor is getting 5V at the pins. Could it be this or maybe the tps, I'm not sure how to check this so if anyone has some advise on voltages or resistances I should be checking please contact me.
