  • Huff 'n' Puff Air Lines 18 Apr 2021 (Forum)
Fuel station forecourt air lines are now literally - a 'wheeze' ! In the olden days somewhere there used to be a compressor and an air tank reservoir. Inflating flat tyres just took moments.  Most forecourts now use 'Pay As You Go' coin operated air lines that typically cost at least 50p for a miserly four minutes or so.
  • VW Golf Mk5 TDI - Strange judder / shudder accelerating in 6th gear 17 Apr 2021 (Forum)
I notice it more when the car is under load, going up hills and with a fuller load (e.g. passender, luggage and full tank of fuel). I've had it into an independant specialist who couldn't find any diagnostic errors but guessed that it might be the Mass Airflow Sensor - that was duly changed but made no difference. I'm lothed to take it to a VW dealer now its out of warranty as I feel they'll charge enormous amounts of money to change all sorts until they find the true cause.
  • Peugeot 306 meridian (S) misfire 15 Apr 2021 (Forum)
Has anyone experienced similar problems, and have these been rectified by replacing or reprogramming the ECU? I suspect a fuel pump or ignition electrics problem could also be possible and I see many people mention coils affecting the ECU can I discount any of these? In addition if a new ECU is required is it particularly unwise to try and pick one of these up from a scrap dealer?
  • VW Golf 1.6tdi SE running report 2013 6 Oct 2020 (Forum)
Between 90k - 130 each oil change was at 10k - got a bit lazy. Air filters generally changed at 10k and fuel filters 20k.  Its on original disc rotors and pad have been changed 2to 3x - rears only once.  Warranty work included one window regulator, a shock absorber and two small faults related to limp home mode kicking in and petrol cap failed to open.
  • Audi A3 Sportback - MissFire 27 Aug 2020 (Forum)
I have put a new ignition coil in, all new spark plugs and leads, I’ve cleaned out the throttle body. I’ve but a new fuel filter in and when I listen to the injectors at idle they all fire consistently sound good to me. About 6 months ago I had a new gear box and clutch put in. It's still coming up with a miss fire.
  • BMW 520d M Sport Touring - VED rates 11 Aug 2020 (Forum)
I'm in the market for a 'new' car after putting up with my Mercedes E250 CDI Estate for nearly 10 years and another bill on Friday for £300 for new suspension springs after a B service the week, bringing repair and service costs to a total of £6,000, or £600 a year or over 60p a mile (and that doesn't include depreciation, fuel, insurance or road tax!) I've looked at buying a 19/69 facelift BMW 520d M Sport Touring for £25k, but because the original list price was £44k, the VED will be £475 a year for 5 years, which I'm not willing to pay for the small number of miles I do.
  • Mitsubishi Shogun - Shogun 3.2 Di-D plumes of black smoke on tickover 19 May 2020 (Forum)
He did hear the clunk though, as the bonnet was up, & he started looking around the nearside area of the engine bay as it sounded like it came from there. I initially thought turbo but that's on the offside and it does seem to be fuel burning rather than oil. She doesn't use any oil by the way. It's intermittent which is even more annoying because I know if I cave in & take it to Mitsubishi it probably won't do it for them.
  • Engine braking, and how to prolong disc life. 21 Sep 2019 (Forum)
And in automatics there is not much engine braking effect.   Personally, I coast where possible for maximum fuel economy.  Brake pads only cost a tiny fraction of a penny per mile. In Scotland, this meant that I often had to replace the brake disks for successive MOT's, due to "visble rust".
  • Peugeot 307 (2001 - 2007) - 03 110, Anti Pollution System Fault light. 7 Jul 2019 (Forum)
Ive heard that here is a "Cerium" / "Sirium" dosing system on the car.... could this be the fault ? Ive tried a fuel additive, with cerium in it..... didnt seem to do anything !! :-( I need to get a quick fix, as i've just sold the car, and its being picked up soon..... • Advice for new car - i've confused myself! 14 Jun 2019 (Forum)
I currently have a little 1.6 Fabia 3 which has been hugely reliable and great fun but is now a little small and has never been the best for motorway driving so with these parameters in mind:- 1) comfortable motorway ride 2) reasonable fuel economy 3) spacious enough for a family of four 4) reliable and cheap to maintain 5) long term purchase, probably best part of next ten years or so 6) a decent sound system!
  • 2004 Toyota Corolla 2.0 D4D 116 - Corolla E12 D4D won't start when hot 23 Mar 2019 (Forum)
The auto electrician who worked on the car did not fix the problem, instead he modified the cooling system so the fan would work permanently. This first consequence was an unbelievable fuel consumption for a diesel ( 16 city 29 highway) .The difficulty starting the car appeared when he finally got the fan to work normally. The problem is that even now i noticed that the fan does not work perfectly well.
  • Another what car to get 4 Jan 2019 (Forum)
I've looked at Toyota auris 1.2t which get good reviews however whats this engine like compared to the HDI for fuel economy ( mine is always excellent) and can it cope with lugging a car around Europe full of luggage, wine and beer . Again my 308 although not fast, is excellent in this regard   Thanks for reading
  • Car suitable for taller driver 2 Jan 2019 (Forum)
Also I am 6ft4” so most cars are ruled out due to my 36” inside leg. I have a family to look after so can’t afford anything with a high tax bracket or thirsty on fuel and needs to be no older than 5 years old. My current car is a Toyota Yaris which is limited on comfort as I drive with a small pillow for lumbar support. These cars are what I like at present: 2015 Mazda 3 2.0 Petrol Sport-Nav 2014 Audi A3 1.4 TSI Sport (Sportback) 2015 Seat Leon 1.4 TFSI FR Tech I do like the Honda CRZ but not sure on fit and comfortableness.
  • Toyota Hiace - Misfuelling prevention device 8 Aug 2018 (Forum)
t=78151&v=t">discussion here in the Back Room , I chose an RAC FuelSure for about £25. It worked brilliantly until a mechanic broke it last week when he needed to add fuel from a jerrycan and was too lazy to phone me to ask how to remove it.  So he simply broke it apart.  Grrrrr. (Yes, the mechanic has indeed been sent to a hard labour camp in northern Siberia.
  • Who knows - Advice on new car please 1 Feb 2018 (Forum)
I am hoping someone can help. I currently have an automatic Hyundai Tucson which I love and does the job, however, the fuel economy on it is ridiculous and I am only getting aroung 370miles to a full tank. I have changed my job and have to travel twice the distance I did before meaning that I can no longer afford to run it so I am looking to sell it and get something different.
  • Vauxhall Corsa B - Engine hesitation 23 Nov 2017 (Forum)
The cars not long been serviced as the oil is still golden. I’m going to try changing the air filter, fuel filter, maf sensor and also the crankshaft sensor. It’s going back to the garage today as they suspect the lambda sensor may need a clean/change. Any other ideas?
  • Any - New 3 door petrol-boot for wheelchair 11 Nov 2017 (Forum)
No interest in electric. Do lots short journey so don't want diesel. Also get disabilty rebate on fuel * must have boot big enough for wheelchair. But not a deep boot..and not too high off ground...ideally level loading area. Mother in law be lifting the wheelchair in and out and, although healthy, is 70.
  • Does anyone make a decent footpump anymore?! 18 Sep 2017 (Forum)
the nearby fuel station doesnt have an air machine so for a while I carried a 12v compressor in the boot which I used to top up the tyre pressures. It failed last summer, irritating but was a cheapo job and I wasn't surprised.
  • Diesel to Petrol 27 Jul 2017 (Forum)
The car comes with a can of gunk in lieu of a spare wheel. I'm getting a free space saver kit, along with mats and a tank of fuel. Not a bad deal, all in all. I suppose doing nothing and keeping the C'eed would be the cheaper option, but hey-ho....
  • Skoda Fabia Mk 2 1.2 Petrol - Over-Revving, Bad Consumption 11 Feb 2017 (Forum)
When I stop and put into neutral the engine is revving very loudly and there is a very bad smell like paint stripper, the rev counter climbs up to 2500 rpm and then gradually goes down to 2000 and back up again. The car used quarter of a tank of petrol on a 30 mile journey but the fuel consumption computer showed 56 mpg, when normally it is around 39 mpg. The exhaust system warning light is on. When I switch off the ignition, the car will not start again until the engine is cold.
