  • Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate - Car pulling to the left 10 Jun 2014 (Forum)
, tried the car on different roads, suggested that I swap the front tyres around, which I did last night, drive car today - still the same, so obviously not a tyre problem. I thought that the left brakes could be binding? Dies anybody have any thoughts?
  • "Parked" for 5 seconds! 13 May 2014 (Forum)
The camera car had followed him along the road and took a picture of him as he pulled to the side of the road (next to double yellows), to let the traffic come past, before he parked his car on the street.  The video shows him pulling to the side, with brake lights solidly on and about 3 seconds of him being "on" the yellow line. (he was actually going forward very slowly, but that isn't clear.) He went to the Parking Office today and the counter clerk said it might be worth appealling - but I am amazed!
  • How do I prepare a car for long term storage? 21 Sep 2013 (Ask HJ)
I will be out of the country for three months at the end of the year and have to store my Mercedes-Benz CLK outdoors under a good sheltered car porch....
  • Kia Ceed - Kia Ceed review 9 Aug 2013 (Forum)
I also had an occasionaly traction control wrning light, not sure what caused it but it would stay on until the ignition was turned off. Other than those issues, the car was brilliant. Performance, brakes, gear change, economy and rear space were all impressive. I spent nothing on it other thn servicing and tyres. To summarise I am evry impressed with it and will happily buy another.
  • Volkswagen Polo IV - Rattles for first couple of miles; rattle stops 13 Dec 2012 (Forum)
My Polo squeaks and creaks (and  rattles a little) for the first couple of miles or so of a journey; then the noise stops and driving seems quieter normal. It seems to happen if there is any uneveness in the road or often when I change gear or brake. I took it to the garage and after a quick look they said it was the front nearside wheelarch bush, which they said needs changing; and they want to change the offside front bush at the same time.
  • Mazda 6 - How to get insurance details from the other party 23 Nov 2012 (Forum)
I called my insurance and they said they will send me an assessment form which I did not receive yet. What is the right way to proceed? My car is badly damaged in the back. It was on parking brake and 1st gear but it moved 5-6 feet to the front with the impact. So I think there could be some damage more than the eyes can see.
  • VW Amarok - Amarok AutomaticHJ review 6 Jun 2012 (Forum)
The Amarok also get regenerative barking and low rolling resistance tyres which helps improve fuel economy - it averages a claimed 37.2mpg and emits 199g/km - better figures than the 2.0 BiTDI 163PS Amarok with a manual gearbox.".....   I am assuming the Stop-Start is unintrusive and that it has regenerative braking?   I do have a question or two also: 1 - What's the UK price for this? I'll check and see if I can find anything but it would have been nice to have a guide in the review.
  • 1996 Volvo 850tdi estate - Engine management system 4 Jan 2012 (Forum)
The engine occasionally misfires which can be followed by engine shut-down,all dashboard lights blazing and no power steering or brake servo. After pulling over and waiting for a few minutes engine can be re-started to resume journey as if nothing had happened! My local Volvo garage is unable to find the problem so have gone to a Bosch service centre.Despite their best efforts,a replacement electronic diesel pump and new crank sensor the problem persists.
  • BMW 5 Series E60 - BMW engine stop/start button 4 Aug 2011 (Forum)
Does anyone know if the car has an upgraded alternator or some kind of energy recovery from the brakes to allow this? I've read the manual from cover to cover but it glances over this, so I suspect it's more of a gimmick than anything useful! Thanks in advance.
  • Audi A4 - Audi A4 B5 Rear ABS ring 28 Jul 2011 (Forum)
Due to a stuck rear brake caliper the rear disc on the o/s of wife's 2000 (V reg) A4 1.9Tdi has become badly corroded. I've removed discs (the type with the bearing races pressed into the disc assembly ) and obtained new.
  • C.Saxo.1.1i S Reg. - Vibration/noise when power is lifted in 3/4/5 gear 18 Nov 2010 (Forum)
I have recently forked out £340 for a service that turned into a full change of the back brakes, £40 odd for the Emobiliser receiver (the light stayed on), then another 50 odd for a new tyre. bought the car for about £800 about 3 months ago, (one lady owner). I expected to put out around £500 in the first year of owning it but that figure seems to be rapidly approaching.
  • Nissan Almera - Looking for buying advice on a 2004 Nissan Almera. 17 Sep 2010 (Forum)
My motoring knowledge amounts to checking for even tyre wear and having a look at the brake discs (don’t even know how to check pads) therefore I’d be grateful for some opinions on whether the service history between 15,000 & 40,000 miles is absolutely necessary.   I know that these engines are chain driven, and that clean oil is essential for a long life, so I am slightly weary.
  • Ford C-MAX - 3yr service due - main dealer, indy or diy? 20 Feb 2010 (Forum)
However given the warranty is up soon and she plans to keep it until 8 years or more, she is considering going outside the dealer network for the next service. I could easily change the oil & filters and lube the hinges, check the brakes etc. I'd even hang a 99p airfreshener inside for the full "premium" service effect ;-) Only thing I couldn't do is the electronic diagnostic check but hey-ho. It's a 1.6 petrol for what it's worth, so not exactly rocket science.
  • Honda Accord Tourer (2003 - 2008) - Miffed With Honda 12 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I had precisely the same problem when the car was only six months old, but on the opposite side of the tailgate where the wiring of the brake lights was similarly affected. I 'phoned Honda today who declined any goodwill assistance. I appreciate the car is well out of its warranty period, but both faults were due to a manufacturing defect.
  • Corporate image and a cherished registration 6 Dec 2009 (Forum)
On Berkshire Way, Bracknell today, between two roundabouts I saw such a top of the range 5.0l black vehicle with a cherished registration (containing the initials of a car company who's UK headquarters are in close proximity) driven in a very exuberant fashion (euphemism very much intended here), possibly floored it and managed to get beyond the legal limit in the short 1/2 mile stretch before standing on the brakes to insert itself behind a lorry and turn left towards the aforementioned headquarters - nearside lane was pretty much empty btw. Net result, drivers of cars from that manufacturer even at a corporate level can appear to conform to their apparent stereotype....
  • Ford Mondeo IV (2007 - ) - 09 2.0 Harsh on 18" alloys - advice on change to 13 Oct 2009 (Forum)
I know handling might suffer a bit but I'm no boy racer so happy to compromise. Would this make a significant difference? Would the Titanium X be OK on smaller wheels (offset, brakes etc)? Should I get genuine Ford alloys? Should I sell the OE 18" wheels and tyres or keep for refitting when I change the car? Any suggestions for a nice quiet make of tyre but not sacrificing safe handling and reasonable wear?
  • NIP Received for Red Light offence. 10 Oct 2009 (Forum)
I completley dispute the fact that it was a red light. I was told by my instructor it is better to go through amber if you feel suddne braking would cause an accident and this is what i did. It was 100% not red.Would it be worth fighting this in court or should i just accept the 3 points and fine? I am now paranoid that ive done it since because this was 2 months ago and i am so worried that my licence will be taken away. would they have told me with this letter?
  • Hands-free mobile phones are deadly 26 Sep 2009 (Forum)
The study by the Transport Research Laboratory found slower reaction times for drivers using hands-free mobiles than for those who were above the legal drink drive limit. The tests included getting motorists to brake suddenly while driving at 70mph. Compared to the stopping distance of a driver in normal circumstances, the over-the-limit driver took a further 13 feet before coming to a standstill. However, the driver using a hands-free mobile phone took 26 feet, exactly twice as far, before coming to a halt.
  • Speed limit reductions 12 Sep 2009 (Forum)
There are many more cars on the road now and some of the drivers need to be told to slow down. OK, I?ve heard the arguments about braking and suspension systems being improved, but some of the drivers I see seem to have a suicide wish. In the 1960s / 70s I had a Morris Minor 1952, side valve engine, that could just about meet 50 mph on the level with a following wind.
