  • pug 206 CC (02 2ltr) rear noise 26 Apr 2007 (Forum)
But I thought the Dealer (who has been previously very good) would have spotted this. The closest approximation to the sound I can get is when you brake on a pair of rusty discs for the first time - however this car is well used with no hint of rust on the discs. Any suggestions? Thanks S.
  • Peugeot 406 V6 cruise control failure 20 Apr 2007 (Forum)
When I got my 1998 406 V6 saloon last October, the cruise control worked fine; I took the car off the road to do some work on it (e.g. changed the driver's side engine mountings, checked brakes etc.) I put the car on the road in January, but realised some time later that the cruise control had packed up. Quite honestly, I hardly ever use it anyway, but if it's fitted, I like it to work!.

  • Astra club - mysterious noise 1 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Hey guys, my first post on here, and im really hoping someone can help.. ive got a 52 reg astra 1.6 8v, full service history and 30k on clock, for a few weeks when going above 60mph there is a whisteling noise coming from somewhere near front drivers side, only happends at 60 and above. its recently had service and camblet/tensioners replaced - the noise was there before service and was led originally to beleieve the tensioners were to blame but new ones not fixed it. garage has checked the full car for mis aligned panels, brakes, bearings, alternator, belts and waterpump, nothing is at fault, the blower makes a very similar noise when on the highest setting, but when the noise occurs, having the air vents closed and blower off makes no difference.. any ideas what it can possibly be???
  • Vauxhall combo van 26 Dec 2006 (Forum)
It smokes a lot when i start engine, The bonnet cable has snapped The accelarator pedal is high up and very heavy The brake pedal is very low and spongey but have been told it has new pads. Clutch is very heavy but changes gear, the bite is quite low,is that a good thing? Also the roof is rotten on the box can these be replaced?
  • Speed bumps---tell me please 30 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Are there ways of reducing the damage--like going over at an angle ? I've heard of a sharp stab on the brakes and release just before the bump. Are cars really not designed to cope--bumps have been around for years. I'm assuming that the cars I see hammering over them are hire or lease cars ? I'm amazed at the gouges in the road surface by some bumps.
  • Mondeo disc/pad change 20 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Recently got my 2000 1.8 Mondeo serviced at a Nationwide Autocentre and was told the discs were on the verge of going under manufacturers spec, but that as the pads looked very new (got the car less than 6 months ago so assume they were changed to pass the MOT it came with) to get a little more life out of them before having both changed. But now the brakes have started to judder some, I'm going to have to get them changed. I know you are meant to get pads changed with the disc change but if the pads really are so new does anyone think I would get away with just getting new discs or is it a complete no-no?
  • 8 yr old Audi A6 valuation 4 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Small area of rust re-appearing by front wheel arch base, probably from previous bad repair ( 10p sized, we had it fixed before for about £150) Small ding with small paint crack on rear. ABS and hand brake warning lights come on for a second or two sometimes. Silver with air-con and electric sunroof. Anyone care to guess what it might fetch?
  • vw passat tdi, oil change problems 21 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Hi can anyone help me i own a vw passat tdi year 2000, problem is i have never had a car before i cant service myself i always do all my own brakes, services etc. Does anyone know what oil i can use in my car the vw recomended oils are to expensive, i am aware this model is a long life service vehicle, but do not do very high mileages so would be willing to change my oil once or twice within a 12 month period so buying long life oil will not serve me any perpose. can i purchase oils for this vehicle from regular motor accessories shop or do i have to go to my local dealer.
  • Peugeot306 noise & vibration over 30mph 27 Mar 2006 (Forum)
The noise got worse when i took foot off accelerator (ie going down hill) and seemed to stop when I was either accelarating hard like going up hill, turning a corner or putting on brakes. The noise does not change at all when changing gear or when slowly pulling up handbrake. Only ever started when going above say 50mph and when i'd slow down to about 30mph would stop. It also only started about half an hour in to a drive when car was warmed up.
  • Fiesta '96(P) 1.8D takes ages to start! 10 Feb 2006 (Forum)
I have only owned the car a month and in that time had it serviced, which included oil & filter change, air filter change, fuel filter change, cam belt change, brake fluid and engine coolant replacement and today changed the glow plugs. The car still seems to take a while to start, but only when starting from cold. I have had the battery checked and have been told it is in excellent condition.
  • Rover Metro Ascot Price Guide Please 13 Jan 2006 (Forum)
The specs are - R Reg (August 1997) Rover Metro Ascot 1.1 in Aqua Blue (or like that kind of blue!) It has done 38k miles, just passed its MOT, following having a new radiator, tyres, and brakes changed. It has been driven by my mum, which can be translated to - slow and easy! (i know this has no bearing on the costs!) The body work is immaculate, as is the interior. Any kind of guide for us to work from will be greatly appreciated.
  • What age to stop driving? 13 Nov 2005 (Forum)
On my way home from work last night a car pulled out in front of me from a side-road forcing me to brake hard...and then proceeded to travel at 20 mph. After pulling my hair out for a minute or two I pulled up alongside the driver at a roundabout and saw it was a very elderly gentleman perhaps about 85.

  • Is my QX finally broken? 16 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Everytime the car is fully warmed up and the car "shiver" for a second and the engine just stopped. (If I catch it in time before stalling, I can keep it going with throttle and Left-Foot-Braking, though I don't want to practice this all the time especially in traffic or in a bend.) Then engine would just crank over but not start. Eventually, it would start after 2-3 minutes with a BIG cloud of blue smoke.
  • Freelander TD4 problems! 6 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Hi, a couple of queries I was wondering if anyone could help me with! First, I have an intermittent fault, occasionally when I press my brake pedal the amber TC light and the amber hill descent light come on. They may stay on for a while or go off again almost immediately. Does anyone know why this might happen and what I can do to prevent it!
  • Darwin, again 27 May 2005 (Forum)
They then reached the middle of the road, nearly got run over by a motoribike overtaking down the crown, got cold feet, turned round, and crossed back directly in front of a truck with unladen flatbed that locked all six wheels in the braking process. Last seen stood at the kerb having an argument with each other...
  • Citroen ZX - sanity check 10 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Hi all, A colleague at work has replaced his ZX 1.9D "M" avantage 144k with a Xsara and is looking to sell the ZX. He's been pretty up front with what needs doing to it : Brakes soft - fluid change? Timing belt could do with replacement Poor starting - glow plugs? Needs tax, MOT due in July. Suspension needs attention - brushes? shockers? Now, I've always loved my ZXs and I reckon he'll not want too much money for the car, but there is a few quid to spend to put it right.
  • UK drivers paying too much for parts 1 Feb 2005 (Forum)
If it was done on parts with a much higher replacement frequency then, I know, the disparity would be a lot less. Higher volume parts, such as filters and brake parts are where all the sales revenue is so that?s where all the pricing effort goes in matching the competition. Meaningful parts price research is based upon these basics: Selection of high volume models Selection of high replacement frequency parts Prices obtained from a representative selection of outlets for an equivalent quality and content part Good to read but you are hardly shopping round for an air conditioning compressor each year are you?
  • Fiesta 94 LX Common Earth problem? 30 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Whilst driving along my airbag/seatbelt light comes on and then all of a sudden my dash lights and external lights dim, i have no brake lights or hazards and the car slowly comes to a halt. I got it going again just by pumping the throttle? the car kangaroo hopped for about a min then all of sudden everything came on full blast, lights an all and was back to normal.
