  • UK pea on China`s drum - Car Manufacture 7 May 2010 (Forum)
Out in the Far East the big drum booms and the world quivers to the industrial hammers that are forging the car industry of this Century. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/8644730.stm Perhaps we should go into rickshaw manufacture and set ourselves up as a theme park? I`m OK pulling over half a mile - how about you?
  • Volvo XC90 v Honda CRV 8 Apr 2010 (Forum)
Talk about the agony of choice. Anyway, wife wants a new car. All sensible suggestions of a saloon or estate car have been rejected for no intelligible reasons and we are left with a choice of new 4x4s for c. £25k. Honda CRV 2.2 Ex Auto (2010) - £26,500k - best broker price Volvo XC90 Auto Active - £26k after leather re-trim and a few options added.
  • Honda CR-V (1997 - 2002) - My first CRV keeps coming back to haunt me! 9 Oct 2009 (Forum)
Although since November, 1997, when I bought the first CRV in Passion Orange ( for once both my wife and I agreed on the colour), I have had each of the later models and currently have a CRVIII (Petrol ES Automatic), my original CRV keeps turning up in various local car parks to haunt me! I live in the Nailsea\Clevedon area and it seems that every few months my old CRV turns up. Some time ago it was in my local car park and I was fondly looking over it, when a very presentable young lady returned to claim it!
  • Peugeot 205 (1983 - 1997) - 86 1905 Puzzling Mi16 cold idle problem HELP! 6 Oct 2009 (Forum)
I have a 1986 peugeot 205 with a Mi16v engine from a 405 that was put in about 4 years ago. The car has never idled properly and we have been searching for an answer the whole time we've owned the car. Basically the car will not idle when its cold it stalls as soon as you take your foot off the power.
  • Advice Needed: Mondeo diesel 155 or Octavia 140 18 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Hi, Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking to replace my current car with a diesel estate with a budget of a maximum of £8k but would prefer to spend no more than £7. I will be buying with cash so no finance involved and will be keeping the car for a minimum of three years.
  • Replacing my Volvo S80 18 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Reliability is now more important than ever as there are no buses/ taxis/car hire close by. I use my car to visit a wide range of business clients with my work as an Accountant/Consultant. Budget is £15K max, I?d be happier at £10K and I don?t want anything more than 3 years old.
  • Beautiful cars on film 25 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Alright its an American view of the time of the Second World War, but its a truly classic portrayal of a time. But to the BR point, the second and third epics especially features some of the finest cars ever made and filmed in excellent quality in very realistic settings as to their point in history. I got to thinking of which films show the finest of automobile history in their true time scenarios, not imaginary eccentrics running round in 40 year old cars set in the present day.
  • Insurance for learner as named driver 13 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Eldest child is now about to start learning, neither car is suitable for teaching/learning, so thinking of buying a mates VW Polo, 11 years old, well maintained, manual 1.6... but rusty but has jsut passed its MOT, bangernomics and all that, probably worth about £300 (still talking to him about it).
  • Jaguar S-Type (1999 - 2007) - possibly insane car change 20 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Hi all, We (me, wife & 11 week old son) currently run an 04 reg Toyota Avensis 1.8vvti T4 hatch, and very happy with it we are. Big enough to fit junior's pram & gubbins in and reasonably economical, if not terribly exciting. However...
  • Volkswagen Touran MPV (2003 - ) - 05 1.9 door mirrors - whats the legal position 30 May 2008 (Forum)
Hi I've just bought a three year old Touran from a VW main agent, and despite all their talk of thorough inspection I quickly found out the electric door mirrors don't work either side. As the car had to go back anyway I didn't investigate too much, and assumed it would be a fuse or switch.
  • Small-medium sized used diesel hatch £3-4k 12 May 2008 (Forum)
I'm finally looking at calling it a day with my elderly 306 1.9TD, cambelt due for replacement and radiator is now leaking beyond the Radweld repair stage. The car is 14 years old and has a staggering 222k on the clock and as such the cost of getting these 2 items sorted is lilkely to be exceed the value of the car. The cars I am considering, in order of preference are as follows:- 1.
  • Volkswagen Golf V (2004 - 2008) - (55 plate, 2.0 GT TDI) crunchy gearchanges 21 Mar 2008 (Forum)
However, I don't think this is acceptable for a 2 year old vehicle with just 25k, supposedly built to a high standard, to be having this problem. I've had the car since 18k and this issue has been present since I bought it from a VW dealer with full VWSH. I assume the gear oil to be the stuff put in at the factory so why am I getting this problem??
  • Racer type cars, new advanced driving test? 14 Feb 2008 (Forum)
There was a high wall behind the pavement and a pedestrian would have had nowhere to go if one had been present. A guy about my age (old enough to know better) was standing next to it not making eye contact with passing traffic. Point is, with traction control and front wheel drive making powerful cars safer from spins, should this type of car need advanced training like a big bike in order to be licensed to drive one?
  • Fun bargain car advice! 11 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Insurance... Up to about group 15ish, at the most. I'm not really bothered about toys as coming from a car with three working doors and one working windscreen blower anything is going to be a step up. Reliability is - of course - a concern. With all this in mind, the one car that's really caught my eye is the phase 1 Subaru Impreza 2.0 Sport, non turbo version.
  • What car? Tiny runabout on a tiny budget! 18 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Hello first post, so apologies if I get this all wrong! We currently run a Seat Altea 2.0 sport. It's three years old and we love it to bits, but life is changing and we need a second car. We live in a small market town, and work is five miles away down country roads, school is also five miles away (about four from work) through some single track country roads, as is nursery.
  • Total loss valuation 20 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I was involved in a front & rear shunt this week and I think there is a good chance my car will be a total loss. It was a 2000 year "X" reg. VW Passat 1.9 TDI PD115 Sport estate and I have had the car from new. This car was in very good condition as it is not the family run-about and both the exterior and interior were pretty much perfect (apart from the odd stone chip).
  • Help needed.....bought a write off!! 20 Oct 2006 (Forum)
(it had 2 owners before me) I did a HPI check prior to purcahse and it came out clear (it was on a private plate then but the check clearly indicated that the previous registration had "no intrests recorded" against it). The seller wanted his private plate back, so I eventually acquired the car under its old registration number. I only found out it was a previous write off after bringing it to mazda for some repair work and they carried out an experian check for me. I phoned HPI and they are now telling me that their records indicate this car was a write off indeed.
  • Found out in angle grinder shocker! 29 Aug 2006 (Forum)
New pads went in, followed by some extensive testing before I let Mrs H loose on the car. I first got the idea from a poster on this very forum. Next time I will be a jolly sight cleaner if I put new discs on and bin the old ones; the amount of rusty filth penetrated nearly every orifice.
  • Parts for Older Japanese cars 30 Jun 2006 (Forum)
I currently have an old Toyota Corolla (1994), it is a UK car, have found it a real problem getting spares, even service items such as HT leads, drive-belts, from motor factors. They never have any items in stock, it always takes ages for them to lookup and find suppliers/equivalents, and the price is often only 5 % or 10% lower than genuine Toyota (who also take about 3 days to get stuff) and its always expensive....... so I usually end up at the main-dealer as it is less hassle and often quicker in the end.
