  • How far safety has moved on 14 Jun 2020 (Forum)
The results were appalling. Effectively you were dead at the wheel of the Fiat Croma, Honda Legend, Nissan Maxima, Renault 25 and badly injured in a Volvo 740. You would’ve walked away from the recently launched BMW 5 series and the Mercedes E class but the rest were mangled. It’s an eye opener into how poor cars were structurally before the 1990’s and a big thank you should be directed to the magazine for saving lives at great expense to themselves.

  • Loose stones from a pothole damaged our car - can we claim repair costs from the council? 8 Feb 2018 (Ask HJ)

  • I had the cam belt on my car changed seven years ago - does it need another one now it's hit 60,000 miles? 19 Jul 2017 (Ask HJ)
I have a 2013 Renault Clio 1.4 and it has done just shy of 60,000 miles. It's already had a cam belt change seven years ago (25,000 miles ago). Will it...
  • Best car for London 30 Jan 2017 (Forum)
It's an unusual list and only contains 4 that I think I can spec up to a level to be acceptable - the main manufacturers are Mini, Toyota, Renault, Audi/VW. I think with all the stop-start I do in London the time is for automatic, so with that in mind it's down to: MINI Cooper auto media pepper Audi A1 1.0 DSG7 Sport + tech + comfort pack Toyota CHR hybrid Icon (basic) VW polo r line 1.0 dsg/1.4 BlueGT DSG (+opts) I've test driven the CHR in a higher spec but didn't like it on the motorway and thought visibility was poor so it's trailing a bit but I do love the look and reliability. The Polo I drove was the 1.0 with the dsg and that seemed smooth enough so made me question whether I needed the bluegt.
  • Could you advise on a car for commuting to London? 11 Jan 2017 (Ask HJ)
I currently drive a 2011 Renault Megane but, due to a promotion, now drive into central London daily. The running costs of the Megane and the low mpg make...

  • Skoda - Skoda Citigo 1.0SE or Fabia 1.2SE 7 Feb 2014 (Forum)
Hello. Now my Renault Twingo (which has been a totally joyless car to own) is approaching its third birthday I'm looking to chop it in for something new. As I only do 5-6000 miles a year on mainly urban roads with only myself in the car 90% of the time I was looking for something of a similar size but with a bit of a higher spec.

  • Which wax should I use for my new white car? 24 Jun 2013 (Ask HJ)

  • Car decisions - can't get past the warranty 8 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Have looked at all the usual suspects, Golf, Auris, Astra, Focus, i30, Ceed, Civic, 1-series (steering clear of Peugeot and Renault though) We are looking at about £10k budget, less if possible and maybe a fraction more but would have to be great deal. Requirements are reasonably spacious in back seats and boot (baby on way), ecconomical (mileage c.14,000 a year) and coming from a 75mpg Smart (eek) and of course reliable.
  • £5000 partical and reliable small to medium diesel 24 Feb 2011 (Forum)
they are very expensive though so far i have seen Fiat grande punto 1.3 multijet - (looks ok to me but not sure about the reliability) Vaxuall astra diesel - (again the reliablity issue :/) Renault megane 1.5dci Suzuki swift 1.3 ddti (abit too small but reliable) Mitsubishi Colt 1.5d (seldom sees them on the road not sure about how is it) anymore recommendation? budget at the moment should be £5000-6000 (assume my car value is around £2500 if i could get more than that?)
  • All - Changing to Automatics 14 Jul 2010 (Forum)
They are likely to have problems learning the new skills required. Let me tell you of my experience. I have had autos since 1975,starting with a Renault 16TL auto when I was 30. It had an odd carburettor fault which made it stall after a fast run when coming to a stop at a junction.I taught myself to L foot brake, but it took a while. I had a 1926 Bullnose Morris for 9 years until 3years ago, which had a crash gearbox and centre accelerator. It took me about 18 months to get happy with it.In an emergency situation it was all too easy to hit the wrong pedal!
  • The last golden-ish age of car choice? 13 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Considering a period - of less than 10 years - from the late 60s into the early 70s, and merely considering small-medium family cars, there were such models as the: Alfasud (flat 4) Austin 1100 (hydrolastic suspension and great packaging) Citroen GS (air-cooled flat 4 and hydropneumatic suspension) Daf 66 (continuously-variable automatic transmission via rubber belts) Fiat 128 (transverse engine with end-on gearbox) Ford Escort/Cortina (utterly conventional) Hillman Imp (rear inline engine canted over almost on its side) Morris Minor/Traveller (from 1948 / part timber-framed) NSU Ro80 (wankel) Renault 10, 16, 12 (respectively, engine: rear, behind front axle, ahead of front axle) Simca 1000 (inline rear engine) Triumph Herald (separate chassis) VW Beetle (air-cooled rear flat 4) Wartburg Knight (3 cylinder 2-stroke) In the above list - they weren't all good, but BY GUM there was a heck of a range to choose from!!
  • PT Cruise replacement 22 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Maybe, a SEAT Altea (XL) not sure if it is raised enough. ? VW Touran ? Nissan Cashcow ? At a push a Renault Scenic or Vauxhall Zafira though, he may not remain a friend if I recommend either of these. Possibly even a FIAT Multipla ? These are not the type of cars I would normally look for myself, my question; is there anything I've overlooked?
  • Scenic 03 - 1.9 Dci Fidji 23 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Since buying it from the main dealer last year, I have had trouble free motoring until now. Just before I bought the car, Renault fitted new brake pads to the front. However, as the cold weather has started, the breaks make a slight irritating squeal when I brake. Not a problem as it doesn;t happen all the time I brake, probably every 3 presses of the brake pedal on average.
  • Clio Engine Turns But Wont Fire 1 Jul 2005 (Forum)
I have a B-reg Renault Clio 1.2 Authentique, 19k miles. Normally I turn the ignition key to the point where the dash lights come on, wait for most of them to go out, turn the key another notch, and the engine fires almost instantly.
  • How do I get better fuel consumption 3 Jan 2005 (Forum)
However, the last fortnight I have used it to go to and from work, 1 mile to the motorway then cruising at 60mph for 15 miles and back off for another mile. I have managed to get 42mpg from it! I had it in at Renault garage who have done emissions test etc and say the engine is doing everything correctly. So what else can I do to my driving style? I normally switch up gears as soon as I can, rarely go over 70 on motorway.
  • I need help choosing a car 23 Oct 2004 (Forum)
So far I have "definitely" been about to buy (with reasons I haven't in brackets): Citroen Picasso (unreliable?) Mazda Premacy (NCAP 3*) Renault Scenic (unreliable?) Nissan Almera Tino (gut reaction, didn't like it when I met it) Then I started questioning whether we need an MPV and it was: Mazda 323 (safe? big enough?) Honda Civic (too small?)
