  • Indicator stalks on the right... 24 Oct 2006 (Forum)
It's one thing for most manufacturers to have standardised indicators on the left due to cost efficiencies when the vast majority of European-built cars are LHD; it's quite another for a British magazine to make out that having indicators on the right in RHD cars is some bizarre quirk invented in the far-east! I'm sure most 'older' forum members will recall when many cars had the stalks in the correct place for RHD, I particularly remember Toyotas before they started building them over here.
  • Peugeot 307 "Comm 2000" aka indicator 22 Jan 2006 (Forum)
s late but did everyone have a good Christmas, I have a Peugeot 307, I am sure many of you will say bad choice, and I am beginning to agree yet I like the car very much, the car is now 5 years old and getting to the point of things going wrong, The main and most annoying is the indicator switch has flopped, it needs replacing as clicker has gone, I spoke to Peugeot they said I have to buy this whole unit called a comm. 2000, which is both stalks and radio arm, seems like a silly gimmick to me, I spoke to a breakers they quoted £90 which sounds like a big saving and I?
  • Accident, single track road 19 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Well, had a nice old 'bump' this morning with another car on a single track road in the icy conditions. The road was flat, and has passing places every 50 metres or so; I was half way between my passing places, and the other driver, who was at her passing place, chose to carry on regardless, result being we hit about 10 metres from her passing place.
  • Running in a Diesel - advice please! 17 Mar 2005 (Forum)
I have always understood that, whilst production of engines is far more accurate than it was in the old days, a car still needs to be 'run in' for a while to let things bed in. Can anyone give me the benefit of their advice so I can give the car the TLC it no doubt deserves? Also am I best to give it 'Top Of The Range' diesel for the first few tanks or give it the normal stuff from day one?
  • Advice pls - damage by garage 8 Feb 2005 (Forum)
I asked a local garage to investigate fixing the lock on the rear door of our car. The lock had failed leaving the door unable to open. Despite claiming he could do it without damaging the door card, he actually systematically wrecked the door pull leaving it dangerously sharp and not something I'd want my six year old to get anywhere near.

"Just please bring my chair back, that's all I want - please." The chair, which was donated, cost £1,500. The man who stole the car is described as young and wearing a hood. "The man who stole the car is described as young and wearing a hood. " --- that's good to know, so Police only have about four million potential suspects
  • Toyota Supra 20 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Im a new entrant to the backroom, though Ive been a visitor for a year or so. I?m also new to the world of older cars. SWMBO sought to rejuvenate my flagging interests by providing me with an old sports car. The first that caught her eye was a red 924. But the elder son told her that was not real Porsche. So I have a grey 1988 Supra.
  • Who's fault? 16 Oct 2004 (Forum)
He knows a long left hander is coming up so positions himself accordingly near the centre of the road. Whilst going round the bend (which has double white lines) he notices a Police car on the other side of the road, parked up with the officers arresting two people (he found this out afterwards). Next a 4x4 comes around the corner and has to pull over the double lines to miss the police car - in doing so puts himself on the other side of the road on a collision course for my collegue. 4x4 driver was no doubt shocked to find the Police car parked on a blind bend.
  • Argggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh 8 Feb 2004 (Forum)
To top it off, I went up to my local Halfords to get some wax to sort out the minor scratches that had also appeared in the dent and having got there parked well away from other cars. On returning to Jazz I discovered that not only had it been surrounded by other cars but was also covered in bird muck. Drove home seething, was wiping muck off car and discovered a nice fresh scratch on my wing mirror that definitely hadn\'t been there 30 mins ago when I washed it.
  • Osram Silverstar +50% bulbs 29 Jan 2004 (Forum)
a lifespan of up to one year under average driving conditions?. I?ve never known OE bulbs have such a short life ~ those on my car (Focus) are nearly 5 years and 72000 miles old already. Any comments on these issues would be much appreciated. -- L'escargot by name, but not by nature.
  • Advice for my Dad please! 18 Nov 2003 (Forum)
I thought that buying a new car, especially since his licence runs out next year and he's not sure he will renew it, would be a waste of money, and for the price he was thinking about (£2000) he would end up putting profit in someone's pocket for something not as good as his old 309.
  • honda prelude 2.2vtech (import) 13 Nov 2003 (Forum)
afternoon all, this is my first post so please excuse any small lapses in protocol; i have a 2.2vtech prelude auto, which has 86000kms on the clock, i have had it 5yrs and until now never had a single fault with it.the problem that is starting to appear is, even when the car has been running all day, if i stop at a petrol station,fill-up,and go to the cash point to pay for the petrol, and buy a bag of sweets, when i try to re-start it,the engine will spin over but not fire, this ia often accompanied by the car giving what i can only describe as a "small jump" and the sports-mode indicater light on the dashboard starts flashing.the car will always start again after 2-5mins once this light has stopped flashing, it is only happening once in a blue-moon at the moment, but i would like to get it seen to as soon as poss. thanks for any help/suggestions offered.
  • Punto MK2 Clutch 11 Nov 2003 (Forum)
The car has been going through about 1 litre of oil every 1000 miles, I know this is within quoted limits, but is this realy acceptable for a 3 year old car? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Cheers Ross
  • Renault 19 1.4 Energy Engine change 6 Jun 2003 (Forum)
I havent even started yet for this reason - but does anyone have any clues as to how different the wireing is for the injection unit?? I still dont know if he took the ECU and associated bits out of the other car so it may be a non-starter anyway. Im also slightly worried that the M reg car had a cat and therefore a whole host of associated sensors talking to the ECU :S Also, I guess the injection version of the engine is not much different so could I get away with simply un-bolding the sack of pink fluffy dice off the top and putting the carb (which is still good) from his old engine onto it ?
  • Sloshing water in passenger footwell 6 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Can anyone help please! I could hear water sloshing around in the passenger footwell of my Renault Megane (1.6, 4 yrs old). I could hear this for a few weeks, then I noticed that every time I pressed the accelerator the water seemed to churn, again in the passenger footwell & even if the car was stationary. The engine started shuddering when I was stationary e.g. waiting at traffic lights, so I took it to a garage and was told that the head gasket needed replacing urgently & that the coolant was leaking.
  • MX5 Woe ! 16 Apr 2002 (Forum)
One of my (work) partners turned up today to borrow SWMBO's Disco to go and collect her punctured MX5 wheel. Turned out she had had a puncture on the way home from a night out with a friend (who was in the car). She took off the shiny alloy and put on the spacesaver only to find that the alloy would not fit in the boot. Neither would it fit in the car with the passanger - anyway despite being only a few weeks old it was filthy (brake dust, grime and general cr*p) and certainly would have sullied the lovely interior of her car.
  • Who was driving Speed Cameras 3 Dec 2001 (Forum)
I am told that some people with 'points' on their licence ask friends or relatives to say that they {the friens / relative} were driving. The ?guilty person may pay the fine, of say their 90 year old grandmother who has not driven for 15 years ? {but has kept up their medical certificate}, but granny takes the points. Or perhaps more commonly, say the ?innocent? wife has taken the points for him, he insures the car 'any driver' the insurance will remain largely unaffected ?
  • Ticking engine 25 Nov 2001 (Forum)
I can describe it best by saying it sounds like a creaky radiator does when cooling/heating up. From careful listening all over the car it appears to be coming from the top cam-wheel as I have removed the cam-belt cover and this is where it is loudest. There appears to be nothing wrong with the belt (which is 18,000 miles old and was only replaced Oct 2000) and so I am a bit worried as to what it might be and whether some serious failure is due?
  • Nissan 200SX - Very slow to build revs when hot 6 Jan 2001 (Forum)
Dear Sir I own a K-plate old-shape Nissan 200SX Auto that has been regularly serviced (including semi-synthetic oil changes at every 6,000 miles) and has covered 84,000 miles. The car has always idled at about 700-800 rpm in gear but recently, when the engine was hot after a long motorway run, the engine took a very long time to pick up revs from a standing start.
