Main-dealer salesmen techniques? 29 Apr 2003 (Forum)
I thought end of the month, quota to meet and they might be on for a deal. They had over a dozen 75's and three I liked, there was a nice Arden Green 75 2.0 Diesel on a 99V with under 40,000 miles with leather and climate control at 11,995. A nice car, it was though easily £1500 over A1 book. I told him I had a big deposit wanted about 50% of the price as Rover finance, had no part-ex and all the documents to sign up that day and leave a deposit. -
brakes that don't brake, but break 29 Apr 2003 (Forum)
As the car is a cheap tool, and a great little car asides from this niggle, I would like to either fit the vented discs and calipers from a mk5, or ideally if it is possible (cylinder matching, wheel clearance), fit the larger discs that came on the zetec s. I have also heard rumours that the mondeo / focus / escort components may fit..... ? this is not me wanting to make a boy-racer style modification, just fix the only real flaw (IMHO) of the handy little tool that this car has generally proven to be. -
Time to treat myself 2 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Fair bit of poke, at least 120bhp, preferably more Some toys to keep me happy, ie elec windows, cruise control would be nice 5 doors Luxury rather than outright sportiness Group 14 insurance or less Cheap to service Reliable Not too thirsty, V6 would be nice but too expensive to run at the mo HER requirements are: Decent size boot for all the clutter that goes with kids of 4 and 2 Manual, not auto gearbox Remote central locking No more length than the 405, that's difficult enough to park! We're looking at R,S and T reg cars at places like the GTC or similar, up to about £4k (will be on finance). Likely candidates include Honda Accord, Toyota Avensis, Nissan Primera, Ford Mondeo. SWMBO fell in love with an 85k mile 98S Mondeo Ghia X 2.0 16v manual with leather, air and cruise for £3899 screen price last weekend, but now it's been sold. -
Suzuki Swift 318i Touring 26 Aug 2002 (Forum)
Spotted a 'right one'- sometimes you get an intuitive feeeling about a car- and went to see it today. It was a BMW 318iSE Touring, 1998 S reg, metallic dark green, full BMW history, 134,000 miles, lovely condition, loads of extras (inc. sports suspension and leather sports steering wheel, passenger airbag), full MOT. Ex company director's car (really!) -
fuel tank replacement - legal position? 23 Aug 2002 (Forum)
Hi I have an S-reg Renault Clio 1.2 RN which I bought from my grandfather-in-law last year. He bought it from a Renault dealer in Chelmsford, where it was serviced all the time he owned it, so it has a full official Renault service history. -
Not again - one for my personal team 22 Feb 2002 (Forum)
I have a trolley jack, axle stands, infinite patience and an enviable reputation to preserve. Your comments and advice would be welcomed and acknowledged. Thank Colin S P.S. For other oldies, what happened to the notion that, when you became old, your children and grandchildren took over and looked after you. I seem to spend half my time giving matrimonial, financial and technical (and would you believe sexual) advice to all of them. -
Brittania Rules the Brainwaves 8 Jan 2002 (Forum)
While differences in the way countries measure IQ make it impossible to compile a league table of intelligence, America?s average score has risen by just 24 points since 1918. Much of the British advantage comes from speaking English, the standard tool of communication in commerce and culture. The British also benefit from IQ-boosters such as lower truancy and better nutrition than in America. -------------- Ehere this wretched professor must have been looking for comparisons I don't know. -
Red light cameras 4 Oct 2001 (Forum)
I heard of a case in Cardiff where a chap drives towards a particular junction with red light cameras and he says 9 times out of 10 the light changes to red with a fast amber even though there is no traffic approaching the junction on the other roads. He say?s this has happened since the installation of an inductive loop about 200 yds from the junction. Curiouser and curiouser -

Cheers Randolph Lee Nantucket Island, MA USA PS: BTW I read Honst John and the rest of the motoring section in the ET each week and it brings back the years I spent driving in the UK while I was in the service in the 60's I had a 1961 Austin Healy 3000 that I loved and drove over 100,000 miles in 3 years... -
Getting the gear 9 Jul 2001 (Forum)
The question is - is it Sellotape, WD 40, don't speak to it, a new gearbox or, as I think the French mechanic was trying to say 'keep your wife under the bonnet all the time, so she can push this down when you shout 'NOW, NOW'' Any advice would be welcome and received with gratitute. Thanks Colin S -
Please give me a bus pass - not! 6 Jul 2001 (Forum)
Finally just to rub it all in the bus had a wonderful new advertising paint job which prevented you from looking through the back window to see if any passengers were getting up to get off or the bus stopping light was lit after someone had rung the bell. So you could not even get an observation link there. Grizzle grizzle grizzle, there that?s better. -
Peugot 306 Air Conditioning 3 Jul 2001 (Forum)
Thinking that it might be wise to renew the short pipe at the same time, as it might not be far behind, they did not have one in stock, " Sell a lot of those mate, got 13 on back order, like rocking horse s..t, don't know when they will be in." I would have expected the pipes to have lasted longer than they have! HJ might be useful for your car by car breakdown. Before I start pulling out pipework has anyone changed the long pipe? -
vw passat model variant 19 Jun 2001 (Forum)
Hi Guys first time on HJ so please be gentle on me, just acquired a brand new VW Passat 1.9 td pd (red d and red i letters on badge) from a car supermarket (S Ireland import). I am trying to acsertain exactly what engine spec I have 100hp or 130hp. I bought it as a 100 but information supplied with the car is at odds with itself supplying supermarket does not have a clue either. -
Cuba Fly Drive 29 May 2008 (Forum)
We wanted to see the faded grandeur of Cuba before Fidel Castro pops his clogs and there?s soon a MacDonalds on every corner. So, after doing fair amount of research (thanks HJ forum) SWMBO and I booked a flydrive holiday to Cuba. If you haven?t got time to read further I?ll summarise my feelings here and now by saying DON? -
2 weeks in the US - observations motoring & other 13 Nov 2007 (Forum)
The car itself was typical Amercan fare, lots of poorly fitting trim and fake wood, but with a great satellite radio (Sirius I think)- kids kept wanting radio 1 but 70's and 80's channels won the day! Could not really find traffic announcements but I think that was again similiar to the UK with most cars and say if you are on AM you can't receive FM traffic announcements. -

Toyota Verso impressions and ruminations 10 Jul 2007 (Forum)
My highest cruising speed equates to about 2,500 rpm in 6th, which is the same as the Volvo in 5th but quite a bit higher than even a 1.8D S-Max. Didn't try the audio system. Visibility. Generally very good, and would be excellent with proper glass in the windows. Wipers do an excellent job of clearing the whole screen - no gap in the middle as can be the case with overlapping MPV wipers. -
306 406 HDi timing belt / pulley tick 22 Jan 2006 (Forum)
This is a tow-in, not drive-in, job once you hear it. -- Note:1 I've had lots of pulley failures in taxi fleets, mainly 406's, but 306's now showing same trait as they approach the 1st belt change. Pug HQ has been insisting crank pulley change at belt change for how long now? Note:2 Most stories I've heard on this problem usually involve the 1st garage getting a bad name for belt because the customer invariably goes elswhere, pays same again £80 for pulley and poo-poohs original fitter. -
For Volvoman 14 Mar 2003 (Forum)
At the Mikulov crossing the first time we went, their queue was a good five miles (of solid parked trucks, with drivers sat at tables playing cards!) whereas ours was just one car in front of us! Do it anyway. It?s great fun. -
