Fabia TDI v's Mini D 2 Aug 2004 (Forum)
However I'm concious that its been out for a while and over 3 years the residual on the Mini will be better. 1) How does the trade rate the diesel? Doesn't seem to be many around used - is this good or bad. A friend has a regular Cooper and the fuel economy is really bad - hence the interest in the diesel. 2) If I do go for the Mini what are the vital options to add - clearly aircon, anything else??? The list seems to be very long!!! Any advice would be gladly welcome - especially anyone who has a Mini D. -
NA cars modification 2 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I love those sound that they produce but i am worry whether it would reduce my NA car's performance since its not turbocharged. 2)How in the world does this SAFC works? How is it connected in such a way that it can read your air-fuel ratio? People starts talking about how it can re-tune your A/F ratio and so your car can go to optimum so the question is how this little small kit can detect what is the right ratio? Or does it depend on your operator who fix it in and tune it. -

Trapped wind 12 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Servicing costs are also said to be much lower than a 'real' car. Over a five years you could save many thousands of pounds in fuel and servicing costs. Pie in the sky? A joke? Impractical? -
Dangerous diesel spills 5 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Spilt gasoline evaporates, spilt diesel doesn't. It's oil, and rubber and oil combined don't have much of a friction coefficient. Fuel spills on corners, roundabouts, even gas station forecourts can (literally) be lethal to a two-wheeler. Add rain, the patch becomes invisible and even more dangerous. Any regular rider will know what I mean. -
Fiesta automatic choke problems 4 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Basicly whenever I try and start the car using the "cold start" procedure or otherwise it floods the engine. The engine turns and ALMOST fires, but doesn't. The only solution is to remove the fuel pump fuse, turn the key, floor the accelerator then replace the key. The car runs fine and starts normally when the engine is hot. Does anyone know a low cost solution to this? The fuse trick is not only embarresing but is also giving me a very sore arm! -
Avensis Diesel 1 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Do I need to run it in? Looking to get good mpg and reasonable performance in the long run. 2. The fuel guage looks to be a bit eratic - doesn't move for ages, then drops very quickly. The VW guage was always rock steady and very reliable. 3. Is there a way to reset the 'average mpg' on the computer? -
Saab 9-5 Engine Surge 27 Aug 2003 (Forum)
This car has only done 40k miles and I'd like to keep it, but I'm conncerned that there may be an expensive time-bomb under the bonnet (the fuel guage has also started to fail intermittantly on a sudden basis) Any suggestions welcomed! -
Primera\'s Air Con 24 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Quick question for Dave N, and others too I have just noticed a water leak, with water dripping onto the steering rack. I could not see where it was coming from, and on removing the fuel filter housing (diesel model), have found water dripping from a small plastic stub pipe passing through the bulkhead The water is clear and is not coolant, and I therefore assume it to be condensate from the air condtioning. -
why did you choose your car ? 17 Jul 2003 (Forum)
What car do you drive and what made you choose it ? Was it just looks (are you sure ??) or was it something more important like, fuel economy, size, practicality, cost, performance, driving pleasure ? Come on - what car do you drive and why did you buy it ? I'd also like like to know why some people get so upset about others not liking their cars (Fiat thread). -
Long & thin or short & fat 8 May 2003 (Forum)
Also do these sculpted boxes help with the mpg and if so by how much (ie is it worth spending a little more as this would save on fuel bills)? Any thoughts/advice would be welcomed. -
Peugeot 205 cuts out when cold 22 Apr 2003 (Forum)
At first I was (chauvinistically) sceptical when she told me the problem, thinking she was misjudging the use of the choke. Now I'm convinced. I assume it's some form of fuel starvation during braking because there's no problem at all re-starting. This problem followed a full service by the local Peugeot dealer and didn't exist beforehand. The car has if anything had a tendency to flood when hot and this is what I had asked the dealer to check out. -
Won't start 10 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Help, I put my bike away wet at Xmas, no option with our weather, and I've been trying to get it going again for the last 2 weeks. I've stripped all the switches and connectors and used wd40, replaced the plugs, there is fuel from the pump, all four carbs are wet with petrol, there is a spark at all four plugs, although it doesn't strike me as an impressive spark. I've turned the motor over with the plugs out and earthed in case they flooded. -
Think yourself lucky ! 15 Feb 2003 (Forum)
The relatovely few cars on the road are owned by lunatics who only stop for 3 reasons - they're out of fuel; they've hit a wall; or they've reached where they're going ! So think yourself lucky folks ! -
Shogun Sport 2.5td 22 Jan 2003 (Forum)
The Shogun (not sport) is a different, and somewhat more old-fashioned body shell, I think. Which is the best engine in that one ? I am not concerned in the slightest with fuel consumption. M. p.s. and yes, I have read the CbyC Breakdown. -
Shortlist opinions? 5 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I hope to change car in the next week or so, and have finally whittled the choice down to the following (in no particular order): Volvo S80 2.4 SE (170 BHP) Mercedes-Benz E240 Elegance Saab 9-5 2.0/2.3 SE B** 523i SE Requirements are: peaceful cruising down busy dual-carriageways, good safety, and automatic transmission. Fuel consumption, driving dynamics and 'image' are relatively unimportant. Having said that, I can't quite manage to spell out the 523's manufacturer; so some aspects of 'image' may well rule out a begrudgingly-good car!! -
Cheap Motoring 28 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Hello Back Roomers I have to travel 60 miles each way to get to work and to do this, I bought a 94 Montego diesel Countryman (£500). I roughly average about 42 mpg and this costs me around £50 a week in fuel. However, while the engine is still running like brand new (well running anyway!) the body is having trouble hanging onto it! Therefore, I am in the market for either a new car, or to do what I am currently doing, buying bangers! -
If my car fails its MoT 30 Oct 2002 (Forum)
With that in mind, given that I don't have the time to nurse another banger, what should I get? I'm willing to spend up to £4k. Priorities are space, low insurance, manouverability, and fuel economy, although lots of toys and a bit of performance would be nice. Age isn't as important. I don't want anything larger than 1.8 litres (petrol) or 2.0 (diesel). Not particularly keen on superminis, definitely no people carriers, and Mondeo/Passat size is larger than I need, although I wouldn't necessarily mind that. -
Something for Nothing 30 Sep 2002 (Forum)
BP have now joined with a number of other firms to use 'Nectar' reward scheme. If I buy 2,000 litres of fuel from BP I can ring Nectar on an 0870 Tel No, they will send me a voucher which I can fill in and get free admission for one at - wait for it - an Odeon cinema in the West End. Whatever happened to the Esso free wine glasses promotion? -
Mercedes Driver in HJs Agony Column 4 May 2002 (Forum)
He can't demand that amount from the company. For example my company pays a fixed allowance for a car plus 12p per mile for fuel etc. He can however claim tax relief for these amounts, If he is a 40% tax payer this is still a considerable amount. If he receives, for example 12p per mile tax free then he can still claim remaining tax relief for 28p to 10,000 and 8p for the remainder.
