  • Best new supermini for under £7000? 5 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I have been offered a 58 reg Ford Fiesta 1.25 Style Climate for £6995 (Outgoing model) for £139pm. Is this a good deal? I had one as a loan car and it seemed to drink fuel. Is this normal? Thanks for your time :)
  • In a perfect world. Which car ? 12 Aug 2008 (Forum)
The catch is that you must use it as your daily driver exclusively for that five years. It must therefore fit with your real lifestyle. You will be responsible for its upkeep, fuel, insurance, tax, servicing, repairs and other running costs during that period. What would you choose and why ? Remember, one car only, to be used daily. I think, though I will almost certainly change my mind several times, that mine might be a current BMW 535d Touring with all the toys.

  • Hyundai Trajet MPV (2000 - 2008) - 04 2000 Engine will not start 18 Jul 2008 (Forum)
After several attempts and getting about half a mile from home I rang the AA. First thing to check was the fuel filter, but this was nice and clean. We then spotted the engine managment and immobiliser lights on and the engine would fire when they went out, but died within a second or so. Car towed to Hyundai dealer with suspected electronics fault.
  • is she completly off her rocker 5 Jul 2008 (Forum)
so i just did an online look see, it has 5.3 litre engine, its book MPG is 11 in the city and a whopping 14 on the highway...............0-60 on a full tank if your lucky(ok i made that one up) now when i say she drives it i mean she drives it everyday its her main vehicle......so considering the ever increasing fuel costs does anyone know the name of a good asylum we can have her committed to.
  • Volvo V70/XC70 (2000 - 2007) - 02 2.5 Smoky D5 Engine 3 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Only noticed the problem this week and i have run the tank right down, put common rail injector cleaner through and put new fuel in. The air filter has also been changed. All the obvious things! Any ideas where to look next?
  • Motorbike MPG 24 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Just an idle thought here, but in PUs post about his return from the Ardennes he says "The bike was on top form before going, newly serviced and with an new rear tyre. Overall fuel consumption was very good, varying between 50 to around 60mpg at times." Now I am very ignorant about bikes (I always wanted one but first mother, then wife said NO - you will kill yourself in 5 mins, and who am I to argue with that??)
  • Mercedes Benz - Decided to hang on to old car 7 Jun 2008 (Forum)
I had decided to change my old 'C' class Mercedes that has given great service for 4 years for a used 'E' class diesel but with the current promise of road tax hikes and fuel prices going through the roof I have changed my mind. My C class is reg in 2000 so keeping it will deny Gordon a few hundred £ s and I am no longer sure that diesel is making much of a saving. It,s 126p a litre against petrol at 115p round here so somewhere near 50p a gallon.
  • Alfa Romeo - Alfa Romeo's Reliability 5 Jun 2008 (Forum)
I'd love a petrol, but I'm told the diesels seem more reliable plus there is the added bonus of better fuel consumption and torque. PLEASE can some of you tell me what you think of the 156/159 reliability... shall I take the plunge? Shall I go for a 159 rather than a late 156? Can anyone give me an indication on how much the cam belts are to change?
  • When did you last see a `Tiger Tail`? 1 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Mentioned before, but..every car seemed to wear one... Was that Esso `tiger tail` that you used to hang from filler neck really the best fuel sales booster ever and do you still have one tucked away? It occurs to me that it would be quite a jest to do it again now using a circa 40 year old mass hysteria relic. Well, we had one, didn`t you?
  • ChipsAway etc in Woking area 13 May 2008 (Forum)
It just was too low, so couldn't see it neither through mirrors nor through the back until it was too late. It left a medium sized dent and a few scratches in the fuel filler cap area (just above the bumper). It also left its white paint on the scratches. It is not too bad, but one scratch near the bumper is down to bear metal. So, I'm concerned about rust setting in.
  • Ford Mondeo 1 (1993 - 1996) - 96 1.8TD OEM Advance solenoid vs cheapo version 23 Apr 2008 (Forum)
I know people who have used these cheaper versions and they do work, as in no more smoke at idle and lack of turbo e.t.c. but there car's appeared a bit under-powered and used a bit more fuel. Now would this be because of the cheap replacement or something else? I would rather go for the cheaper option but if I'm going to have similar prob's as my friends have then I'd rather have the real deal.
  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 04 TDI 130 whistling noise 31 Mar 2008 (Forum)
2004 tdi 130----when I de-celerate to change gear I hear a real funny sort of whistling noise from under the car, only lasts a few seconds---but it's really annoying. The car's performance is not impeded although my fuel consumption dosen't seem to be all that good---maybe just the cold air of recent weeks---when I rev the engine up and let go the throttle, the decrease in rpm is much slower that when in driving mode, but I can still hear the whistle so it is nothing to do with the clutch, has anyone any ideas on this beauty rob engine and year details edited into the subject lines, this is a new system* aimed at trying to help casual readers asses at a glance what the question is about * in glacial terms
  • Honda Accord UK (2003 - 2008) - 04 petrol engine over revving after month standing 31 Mar 2008 (Forum)
THis makes for idling in traffic a nightmare. I have red lined it in 2nd (6o mph) to see if it cleared. No good! Since the care is Fuel Injected it cant be a mucky carb. Any ideas. The tank has about 6 litres in it so I don't thing its tank gunge.
  • Peugeot 106 (1991 - 2002) - 1998, 1.5, diesel, wont start! 3 Mar 2008 (Forum)

  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - General question re: Injector Coding? 2 Mar 2008 (Forum)
My guess would be that with the high pressures used these days accelerating injector wear and the multiple injections of fuel into each cylinder per cycle, that the ecu can fiddle with the durations of injection and the intervals between them. I can see that these parameters might be tweaked as injectors wear, or indeed to allow for variation in injector performance when new.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 2000 (v reg) HDi - Ignition Problems 23 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Sometimes when returning to the car it just won't start and you can leave it then it starts. When this first happend the fuel pump was replaced had the car back for a day and it happend again anyway about 8 months ago the car was so called fixed apparently the problem was a little red button on the top right of the engine bay?
  • Vauxhall Astra H (2004 - 2009) - Ownership experiences 1.6 VVT/1.4/1.7TD 31 Jan 2008 (Forum)
I would be particularly interested in views on this engine as it does appear to be new-ish, so would like to know if there are any problems, usual fuel consumption etc. I have not ruled out the 1.4 (looks OK on paper...) or the 1.7 TD, but this is likely to be more expensive to buy; not sure my mileage (<14k) would justify a diesel. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated - thank you in advance!
  • Audi A3 + S3 (2001 - 2003) - 2001 1.8T check engine light with faults codes 29 Jan 2008 (Forum)
I have used VAGCOM which has listed the following fault codes: 17705 - Pressure Drop between Turbo and Throttle Valve (check D.V.!) P1297 - 35-00 - - 17545 - Fuel Trim: Bank 1 (Add): System too Rich P1137 - 35-00 - - The DV has been replaced along with all 4 coil packs and the air mass meter (MAF). If the codes are cleared it takes about 10 days for the engine light to come back on, and the same codes to come back.
  • Renault Clio II (1998 - 2001) - 1.6 8v - uneven idle / hunting ? 7 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Had two minor idle related problems before: 1/ Around early 2002 low idle and occasional cutting out was initially diagnosed as idle control stepper motor though cured by using Shell/BP rather than Tesco fuel. 2/ Around mid 2006 lumpy idle cured by cleaning crank position sensor on top of gearbox. Any ideas? Many thanks. Thanks.
