  • 1992 BMW 525i Touring 8 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Right here goes. Having a spare insurance policy and the need for something to tow a trailer I decided to look for a large state for occasional use. So i'm off on Monday to look at a supposedly immaculate 1992 BMW 525i Touring, for sale at £1000. I haven't the faintest idea of what to look for and wondered if anyone could give me a few hints.
  • how can I stop my rogue car alarm? 11 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I am getting embarrasses with neighbours looking out of their curtains in the early hours to see who the noisy culprit is. Their is also a switch on the dash with a tow hook symbol which effects the alarm but no instruction on how to use it.
  • Diesel and Automatic - ideas? 9 Mar 2004 (Forum)
He'd also like a diesel if possible, as nearly all his journeys are long motorway ones, and economy is important. It also needs to be capable of towing a 2 berth caravan. It'll do around 15k miles a year and be kept for the next 10 years or so. All ideas gratefully received! Thanks, Ian
  • Slush boxes and caravans 15 Dec 2003 (Forum)
I do not believe that autos and caravans mix in any case as you do not have the control you need. Plus as small a car as this is not designed for towing and I belive he will just destroy the torque converter. Am I over reacting?
  • Subaru Legacy - Owner Experience 8 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Just read HJ CBC Breakdown on this model and, in theory, seems quite a good bet as a used 3 year old buy. The 4WD and low range would be useful for occasional towing plus estate car practicality. Do any of the BR community own one, or know of one, and if so what has their experience been. I'm mainly interested in fuel economy, handling, reliability and any horror story catastrophic failures of major components.
  • Citroen C5 (2001 - 2008) - 2.2HDi engine - any views ? 30 Apr 2002 (Forum)
When you first test drove the C5 with the 2.2 diesel engine you had reservations about that particular engine. I would be interested to have the latest view please as I am looking for a tow car for my caravan but do not want an estate and the C5 hatchback 2.2HDi SX has many attractive features including the driving position which is very important.
  • 1.8T A4 POWER RATINGS 12 Feb 2002 (Forum)
I've enquired at the dealer and Audi customer relations but have got no sensible answers. I'm happy with the power i have but wonder weather the extra pull may be useful when towing the caravan.
  • Noisy fuel pump 11 Jan 2002 (Forum)
I left the car at home and came back in the Land Rover, as it is only 3 miles to work, so the AA wouldn't tow me home if the pump died on the way.
  • Rover Towbar Socket 26 Oct 2001 (Forum)
Can anyone help with this specific question? I am about to fit a (second hand) tow bar to my 1995 Rover 820i and have noticed in the Haynes manual I have, covering 1986 to 1995, that the wiring diagram shows connections to a 'Trailer Socket' Is such a socket provided in the loom. and where might I actually find it?
  • Petrol in a diesel car 20 Jun 2001 (Forum)
Went to an unfamiliar garage and managed to put 17 litres of unleaded on top of about 45 litres of diesel already in the tank ie it finished up full. I drove 10 yards to get off the pumps and then got towed in for tankdrain/clean, system flush etc. Will this action prevent subsequent damageto the diesel pump and what would have happened if I had driven off in blissful ignorance with 25% petrol in a diesel car?
  • Blue Chip Leasing. What is it? 20 Sep 2023 (Forum)
I looked at a car today and the previous owner is Blue Chip Leasing. Does anyone know about them? The vehicle has done a fair few miles (60k) and has a tow bracket, which seems unusual for a 2WD. The dealer says they'll be motorway miles as Blue Chip lease cars to businesses. Anything to be concerned about here? It is missing a service or two. The vehicle is from 2020 and only had one service in 2021 and one a few weeks ago that the dealership did.
  • Hyundai / Kia 1.0 T-GDi engine failures 2 Aug 2022 (Forum)
I was told today by a friend who’s 1.0 T-DGi Hyundai engine failed that it’s becoming a widespread issue due to cam chain catching the cam cover. Anyone have more information? Have Hyundai got a permanent fix? His car was towed into the dealers at the weekend, service centre rep told him they diagnosed the problem within a few minutes once they realised it was the 1.0 T-DGi model. It’s a ‘known issue’.
  • Dacia Duster - Anyone got a Dacia 16 Jan 2021 (Forum)
I currently have an 18 plate crossland x. We will be getting a small caravan (900kg max) and the crossland will never tow it, hence getting rid.  Have looked at the Dacia Duster but not sure as they seem cheap so I'm  guessing there's  a reason why they're cheap. Just wondered if anyone had one and what they're like or whether to avoid.
  • Tesla, Nissan, Renault ets. - Spike in mayday calls as EVs run out of juice 23 Nov 2020 (Forum)
Apparently the recovery services are receiving a surge in calls from owners of EVs running out of juice. The AA have rescued more than 600 EVs in two years. Most cannot be towed normally and have to be transported with all four wheels off the ground. Apparently on the spot charging has been rejected as it involves a diesel generator which Greta would not be too pleased about !
  • Hybrids for Long Commute and High Mileage 18 Jun 2020 (Forum)
My challenges are that I generally do a 110 mile commute (55 each way) with the occasional 200 miler and quite a lot of night time/weekend ferrying the kids around- totaling around 35,000 miles a year. I also tow a caravan. Really like the RAV 4 but also VW Passat GTE. Advice gratefully received.
  • 2013 Passat 2.0 TDI Blumotion Est - VW EA 289 Engine Update 25 Aug 2016 (Forum)
After having a few concerns about having the softwar updated for the emissions ,i had the car done along with service 2 weeks back since then the car has been fine with one bonus that the MPG has certainly improved !even when towing our caravan .Has anyone else noticed any differences after the recall as been carried out ?
  • Renault Scenic - Renault 7 Jun 2016 (Forum)
After a long run my scenic with automatic transmission came to a halt with all warning dashboard lights glaring at me indicating stop . I had to be rescued by Green Flag who towed me to the nearest garage but will not be looked at till Monday. Has anyone had any problems with their automatic gearboxes as i am worried about cost or could this be simply an electronic fault.Previously the car had travelled 400 miles that day without any warning of impending disaster but fortunately I was only 10 miles from home

  • Ford Focus - Temperature gauge 14 Sep 2015 (Forum)
Ford Focus 1.8TDCi zetec 2009.  When towing the temperature qauge will suddenly rise to max. but take foot off and goes straight back to normal. This is known for 2006/7 Fords per the fix in 2008 but Ford and local main dealers have no knowledge of this for my model or age of car.
  • Renault 1998 Scenic Megane - TDC sensor 24 Jun 2015 (Forum)
Drove about 300 yards and the car just died at an busy intersection. Wouldn't turn over to restart. Had it towed. 3 lights remained on. The Oil light,Battery Light and the Coolent light  Now 4 days after the same lights stay on and motor won't turn over. Have I blown a circuit or is it possibly the TDC sensor or does it sound the problem is worse?
