  I see the International Engine Awards have been announced for 2006 (usually these are dominated by BMW and Honda but VW have done well this year):- Best Overall Engine = BMW 5l V10 (M5) Best New Engine = VW 1.4l TSI Best Fueal Efficient Engine = Toyota 1.5 hybrid (Prius) Best Performance Engines = BMW 5l V10 Best Sub 1 litre = Honda 1.0 hybrid (Insight) Best 1.0 -1.4 = VW 1.4l TSI Best 1.4 - 1.8 = Toyota 1.5 hybrid (Prius) Best 1.8 - 2.0 = VW 2.0l FSI Turbo (Golf GTI) Best 2.0 - 2.5 = Subaru 2.5 Turbo Best 2.5 - 3.0 = BMW 3.0l twin turbo diesel (535d) Best 3.0 - 4.0 = BMW 3.2l (M3) Best 4.0 + = yes you guessed it the 5.

  Has anyone any ideas. BMW say they haven't heared of the problem before - but then they said that about the high sulphur petrol bore liner wear problem too ! !

  Obviously the 2.5 will cost more but not a great deal.  So Can someone advise me on which to get? I've decided on a bmw so no comments telling me to get something else.  Thank you.

  Its a brilliant car and I've always said if I were to buy a new one, it would have to have superior handling, ride and comfort, so no astras, golfs etc. I reckon I can get £2.5k for my car privately, is that reaslistic? Is the BMW 523i 170bhp a good car/engine and is it a good price at £2000 or should I haggle? Finally, apart from running costs, is the BMW superior in every way to drive and be a passenger in? Or should I just keep the focus?

  Hello need some help a friend of mine has a T-reg BMW 528i he took it to a BMW garage because when he broke the steering wheel shook! They said it needed front discs and pads, I fitted the new parts and for about two weeks it happened again so i swapped the brakes again and for about two weeks was fine, I have now replaced the front discs five times with three different makes of discs and pads including genuine BMW parts and the problem still occurs!!

  I've been looking at the photos of BMW's latest MM (Mille Miglia) retro concept car inspired by their 328 Touring Coupe which won the Mille Miglia race in 1940. While it might turn heads at motor shows, I do hope this car doesn't point the way for future BMW styling.

  I would never ignore the mains without  at least taking the accessable caps off for a look. I do not own a BMW and I can appreciate how much extra work this makes. Is this the reason the mains get ignored?

  i have a 1996 bmw 318is coupe. went for MOT and it failed on emissions. took the car to a garage and they said it needed a LAMBDA sensor. had this fitted, took car for retest and it has failed again on emissions. what do i need to have changed now. your help is appreciated

  This is to say thank you for all the excellent technical input since my post about steering symptoms on daughter's "new" car. Armed with the info. a realignment has been done so now the battle to get reimbursement from the BMW dealership. Progress will be posted in "discussion" section.

  Hi, I have problem on my 55 plate Bmw x3 diesel....when I change down gears or just cruise in neutral there is vibration and like a clunking sound....thought it might be exhause bracket but have had that checked out.

  The garage diagnosed a steeering column problem and changed the column, to no avail. The car has now been in the garage for 5 weeks, and the combined efforts of all the BMW main dealers in Gloucester have failed to find the fault (electronic, presumably). What is my next step??

  The owner's manual is advising that we take the car into a BM garage.  The brake lights appear to be working fine.  Mystery! does any body know of a specilist BMW garage in South London or Surrey. Thanks

• BMW 318 valvetronic petrol consumption 8 Dec 2003 (Forum)
  Does anyone with a similar car check their fuel consumption figures? I'm getting 43mpg on the motorway, and 33mpg on A roads. This seems less than BMW's own figures. Is this normal? Also, does it make any difference using Super Unleaded, and if so is this worthwhile financialy?

  In the 2003 International Engine of the Year Awards, I see BMW have won 3 awards. In the 1.6 to 1.8 litre category, the winning votes went to the 1.6L MINI Cooper S, - In the 2.0 to 2.5 litre it went to the 325i engine as will be fitted to the new Z4, - and in the 3.0 to 4.0 litre category, it went to the 3.2 litre motor as fitted to the M3.

  Who now owns these brand names, BMW or MG / Rover. So sad that the new Mini is a BMW {however, possibly a better engineered car as a BMW than the now small car maker - MG Rover, could have produced?. Any chance of seeing a new Stag, Spitfire or Healey 3000?
