Turbo engines suffer double the failure rate 8 Dec 2009 (Forum)
I was reading a report today in Which that (according to Warranty direct) the average incidence rate for engine failure is 11.3%- but with turbocharged engines the failure rate is 27.8%. That?s more than double. (Why read it in 'Which?' when it's here: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/item.htm?id=35547.) The cost of engine failure repair also increases, from an average £619 overall to £875 for turbocharged cars. -
The trunkating of mechanical adventures 14 Nov 2009 (Forum)
You just can`t get that feeling of `adventure` back, can you? in modern motoring, that is. Those trips up to Scotland in the 60`s. Shap Fell in third gear, being happy that you could get up at 40mph. The little tribulations with points and the sticking piston in the SU carb. No mobile phones for help and driving along those single track roads in the Western Highlands. -

Volkswagen Passat (1997 - 2000) - 97 1.6 brake problems!! please help.... 13 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Hi i have a passat 1.6, its done 124K, the other day i was driving down the motorway at about 70mph and i had a sudden loss of power, only seemed to drive in 3rd gear, came off next junction and noticed loads of smoke coming from the o/s rear wheel, so pulled over into layby, i could hardly the drive the car as the seemed like the brakes were totally seized on. I waited 5 hours, the car has cooled down, then it drove o.k at low speeds back home. -
Volkswagen Golf V (2004 - 2008) - To sell or not to sell. Decision time!! 12 Mar 2009 (Forum)
My concern with the private sale route is that people seem to get scared if a car has done more than 40k miles, whatever its age! PArt two of my thread is to recommend something fun, but not ridiculous (no XJS V12's) to replace it for around the same money. Maybe one of the above, or a Cooper S? -
Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - Insurance claim query 6 Feb 2009 (Forum)
I have a 1998 (S-reg) Peugeot 306 cabriolet which was shunted from behind damaging the bumper & rear panel. The bodyshop have quoted £1400 to get the repairs done and they are not sure if the boot lid needs replacing as well. -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 2002 2.0tdci - Fuel injectors 17 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I own a 2.0 tdci 130 Mondeo and have found that it is now producing lots of black smoke under acceleration, once i reach 70mph and from there on the car seems to hesitate and "two`s and fro`s" hope you understand what i mean. The car has an intercooler hissing under acceleration and i cannot hear the turbo (because of the cooler noise) is this normal? Is this the same for other TDCI owmers? -
Wallet busting FAP and other nightmares on `tech` 18 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Am I the only one cringing at the wallet busting scenarios concerning FAP and Common Rail, that appear daily on `Technical`? There`s Screwloose doing a wizards job with often sparse initial detail - you know- a bit of eye of newt and hair of dog - stirred into the pot in an attempt to get the codes, more info and even solid blocks of concrete like text paragraphed. -
Insurance claims 12 Aug 2008 (Forum)
There is no driving offence issue under process with this, merely the personal injury claim and what we consider to be an unwarranted blemish against my son?s driving record -
Lipstick on your collar, asphaltines in your tank. 2 Jul 2008 (Forum)
OK, maybe you`re wanting to write `change the filter` and so on.. but you can`t be let off that easily...;) Maybe the answer is only the presenting question. If belief is the price of sentience, what`s going on in the fuel system and do you really want to intervene? ;) -
Cars still being flogged to death, no saving then? 23 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Cars surging past on full turbo boost, then braking heavily at the next roundabout. Made me wonder, where`s the evidence of concern for saving money? Everyone was really flooring it on the ring road this AM. (As always) You could almost hear the pedals being thwacked to the floor as they surged alongside turbo`s hissing, braking, surging and then dropping back at times due to lack of anticipation. -
Alfa Romeo 156 (1998 - 2005) - 1999 2.0 TS - ABS problem. 21 Mar 2008 (Forum)
I have tried to measure the output from each sensor, but they only give a reading of 0.1 to 0.3 mV at speeds between 10 and 30 mph, and the readings are inconsistent. This applies to both rears and the n/s front (I haven't tried to measure the o/s front). The only possible fault I can see is that one of the new rear sensors isn't quite fitted flush with the face of the hub casting. It looks like there could have been some dirt there when it was fitted, and I can get a 0.015" feeler in between it and the hub casting. -
