  • Ford and Fiat miss out on top Euro NCAP safety ratings 3 Mar 2017 (News)
Land Rover's new Discovery also scored five stars, but in the frontal offset test the driver airbag bottomed out due to insufficient pressure. The recent facelift of the now ten year old Fiat 500 received just three stars, despite the fact it was awarded a five star rating when first tested in 2007. This is, in part, down to more rigorous testing implemented in 2009 which changed the way cars are assessed.

Standard fleet fodder that used to sell well is now being shunned by a much more fashion conscious, image conscious market, boosted by hundreds of thousands of ex-company car drivers who want something different from their old company hacks. That’s why top bid for a 34,000 mile Daewoo Nubira 1.6SE was £2,000; why a 67,000 mile 98S Mondeo 1.8iLX failed to raise more than £2,200 and why all the other fleety stuff stuck to the auction floor.

According to Bonhams, the vendor only recently found the car gathering dust in his grandfather’s garage. Rob Hubbard, Bonhams motoring specialist, said, ‘It was an incredible discovery; the chassis, engine, axle, gearbox, steering box numbers are all present and correct, the interior is completely original in wonderful green leather. For a car that’s over 80 years old, it’s truly astounding.’ The vendor’s grandfather purchased the Bentley in 1935 and is known to have used it for family holidays throughout the 1930s and 1940s.
