how to wind back calipers - 199 Audi A4 22 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Hi Everyone, I'm hoping someone can help me out, I'm in the missle of fitting new brake pads to the rear of a 99 audi A4. Im having real problems getting the caliper pistion to go back in. It seems to be stuck (I'm pretty sure its not seized as the piston will move back out from the pedal). -
wheel bearing - Fiat Coupe (W reg) 18 Jun 2006 (Forum)
My car has recently started to make a "howling" noise which starts off at about 25/30mph.I have checked all the usuals like clutch in,gearbox in neutral, brakes on/off with no discernible difference. My own suspicion is that the n/s front wheel bearing is on the way out as there seems to be a slight reduction in noise on roudabouts (turning right effectively). -
Xantia 1.9TD Lower hub ball joints 4 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Closer inspection reveals play in this joint, even when rocked by hand under load (To clarify, it's the one on the bottom of the great big casting that fixes to the suspension leg and holds the brake caliper.)I assume that I'll need a special spanner to undo this (looks like it needs one of those C shaped spanners). I'm new to Citroen's, this is my first one so any advice is greatly appreciated. -
Form over function? 22 Jan 2006 (Forum)
There was bright sunshine on the back of the cars and from anything other than directly behind, the lights were difficult to see. I've noticed before on new Passats that at night, the brake lights drown out the indicators. Anyone else noticed? Chris M -
Dash lights - '93 405 14 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I've got a '93 L Peugeot 405 1.6 that runs fine but recently the dash warning lights (oil, battery, STOP, temp, fuel) all come on together occasionally if I brake hard or corner enthusiastically (not that I do that m'lud). The car shows no sign of being about to stall and carries on running ok. It's got me stumped. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. -
Merc cruise control 20 May 2005 (Forum)
Driving to an MB dealer 20miles away to have the brake fluid changed (half the price of my local one) I noticed cruise control wouldn't work on the motorway - or indeed above 55mph. I asked the dealer to check it over and they said this was due to the wrong tyres being fitted (205 55's on 16 inch rims) - these are the standard MB wheels and the tyres were fitted by an MB dealer! -
Peugeot 406 rear wheel bearing 6 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Just visited by local Pug agent to get a set of rear wheel bearings (drum brake) for my 1999 406 diesel estate . I was told that you can't change the bearings but you have to replace the complete hub at circa £130 + vat. Is this right?? As a Technician I fail to see why these bearings can't be changed. -
Mazda 2 1.4 Auto Shift Changedown 2 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Just wondered if anybody had found the same as me ie in Auto mode the changedown from 2nd to 1st as you brake (ie stopping at lights) can be felt ever so slightly through the break pedal (ie I'm aware of first being selected by the engine). Think I may just be being too over aware of stuff because it's new! -
Low or High Mileage? 24 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Now i dont know if i'm in the minority on here but as long as a car is regularly serviced i would generally always rather have the low mileage car. The interior, the tyres, the brakes and generally most wear and tyre items (bar the exhaust/cat) usually seem to be in far better nick on a low mileage car. Which means less immediate expense. -
Peugeot 406 Coupe 31 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I bought a 406 Coupe 3.0 V6 (99 plate)last week. On the whole I am very pleased with it but it does have one major problem, squeaky brakes. I have taken it back to the garage who have said that they have changed both the discs and the pads but the problem remains. Not knowing much about cars I am becoming a bit concerned that they may be ripping me off and I was windering if anyone had any useful advice first about what the problem may be and also what I should be telling the garage. -
n reg nissan almera pulling to nearside 2 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Hi hope someone can help me with a problem I have with an "N" reg nissan almera 1.4 lx.It continually pulls to the near side while driving,it brakes in a straight line. I have had the tracking laser checked and it is o/k.Both front tyres seem to be in good condition with no signs of uneven wear. The pulling is not severe, but if i let go of the stearing wheel it would be into the kerb within about 3 to 4 seconds. -
Long journey preparation tips 20 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Should I be checking anything in particular before setting off? (eg, oil level (half full), screenwash, power steering and brake fluid, tire conditions etc) Would you recommend taking anything in particular in the car besides a blanket and coat? (Which I carry anyway.) All advice appreciated! David. -
I parked next to a Corvette Z06 today 2 Nov 2003 (Forum)
I love how they print ?405 Horsepower? in a flashy stainless steel logo on the sides lol! The air vents and bright red brake clamps look very cool. The funny thing was there was also a new Mustang Cobra R two rows over. So I got to check out some of America?s best in the same parking lot lol. Do you have ether of these cars in the UK? -
Central Locking Prob - Rear door, Astra. 11 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Is there anything simple that I could do to solve this? I am not going to any garage/mechanic about it so soon after having the brake and reverse switches replaced. Thanks for any suggestions. HF -
Bust leg - will an auto help me? 5 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Some friends recommend I buy a cheap auto and I have in fact got the option of a 1990 MK 2 Golf auto. Question is, will this help or not? I'm not convinced as I'd have to learn to brake safely with my left leg for there to be any advantage. Any advice out there? Thanks Baz -
Pug 306 strange noises 7 Apr 2003 (Forum)
I drive an L reg 306 1.4XR, its done about 90k miles. 2 days ago i noticed a kind of knocking/vibration noise, seeming to come from the left hand front side of the car. the noise increases in time with the speed of the wheels and is most noticable under engine braking; yet it continues to make the noise when freewheeling with the engine off and out of gear. The noise seems to dissapear under acceleration. I'd rather not have to take it to a garage as being a student means my finances are limited. -
grabbing autobox 24 Apr 2002 (Forum)
All the gear changes happen when they should, but over the last year it has started to snatch at some changes. It only happens on light throttle, most often around 15mph/1000rpm when gently braking, or around 20mph/2000rpm on the way up, but it can behave perfectly doing the same things, and seems to have good and bad days. Suggestions on tests/observations to narrow down the field and find the cause and the cure would be very welcome as it's the only thing that spoils my enjoyment of the car. -
VW Passat TDI clutch -advise 15 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Disengaging still occurs at half travel. The cars has 32,000 on it, I don't ride the clutch and always hold it on the brakes at junctions. There is absolutely no slippage once engaged. Any ideas what might cause this behaviour ? Thanks in anticipation. -
Turbo whine. 29 Aug 2001 (Forum)
I got it a few weeks ago and it seemed ok then (Maybe l wasn't listening). Of late l have begun to notice a whine (like a short low braking squeak) when l am coming OFF the throttle after the turbo has kicked in. This happens around 3psi as the needle drops back towards negative boost. I guess l could ignore it as it makes no noise when it spools up etc.. but l don't want it to be an obvious symptom of something terrible to come. -
Is the Honda Jazz known for having a particularly stiff handbrake? 4 Jun 2010 (Ask HJ)
My parents, both fit and strong, though of a late 1920s and 1930s vintage, cannot apply the handbrake of their Honda Jazz sufficiently hard to stop it...
