  • Need a replacement for Rover 75 15 Aug 2014 (Ask HJ)
I have to replace my Rover 75. Ideally, I'd like a car with a similar level of comfort to my Rover (leather seats, air con) with similar handling and economy....
  • Please Help! So stressed as hit parked car 29 Oct 2012 (Forum)
Hi I am at my wits end as i helped someone move and hired a van. I caused a small scratch to a parked car and the owner said he would consider my offer of paying for the repair out of court. I didnt hear anything and assumed he had let it go...until 6 weeks later i got a letter from his insurers He is now saying his car is undrivable and is using a hire car The problem is im young and on a minimum wage, though i was insured to drive the hire van as i didnt notify them of the incident as i thought the owner was unlikely to claim...im now not covered as the hire company say i failed to tell them within 7 days.
  • Company car tax info please 24 Aug 2006 (Forum)
I am disillusioned in my current job, been for an interview for a job that has better hours but £6k less pay. However it comes with a company car, either a Focus or Astra. Now I have never had a company car so unsure of rules so if anyone has any links, info etc then I would appreciate it. I asked at the interview what the company "rules" were on the car and was told that all business mileage is covered and you would pay for any private mileage, but he didn't say what the payment was.
  • Advice please on an estate.... 3 Oct 2003 (Forum)
I wonder if any of you guys can offer me some help...I am a bit out of touch with car ownership - had a van for the last 10 years. I drive at the moment a VW caddy TDI,its a company pooled vehicle. Due to my work role changing I am looking at a largeish estate, preferably diesel. I am looking at spending about 8-9K on a car and charging the company mileage to cover costs, probably about 15,000 miles a year, I will be getting in the region of 35p per mile.
  • Is Duratec HE engine reliable? 10 Apr 2003 (Forum)
What is the general experience with the Duratec HE engine? There must surely now be some that have covered high mileages. Is there anything to check for on these cars other than the items listed in 'car-by-car breakdown'? A final query - does anyone know if it is possible to get a discount for 'no p/ex' off the Ford Direct prices, or are they pretty much 'fixed' like 'car supermarket' prices?
  • RIP handbrake, spare wheel and 4th cylinder 3 Sep 2024 (Forum)
I'm always open to new technology and exciting trends in car design, but there are three that I find utterly tedious. Press-button parking brakes and space saver wheels (and their truly evil half-brother, the puncture repair kit) have been covered amply in other threads.
  • Mazda CX-5 - Windscreen wipers not returning to rest positon 6 Sep 2023 (Forum)
The Mazda dealership has checked out the problem and say there is nothing wrong and they are operating as any other car does. I have owned cars that did exactly this but not for the last 40 years or so. They were unable to answer why this problem did not exist during many months of use or why my previous Mazda never did this during the entire time I owned it.
  • Car Insurance EXCESS question 28 Jul 2021 (Forum)
Just been surfing the comparison sites for good car insurance deals-interesting. Questions plse. I see that there are two excess options- a compulsory and a voluntary. So if the compulsory excess is £200 and I also opt for a voluntary excess of -say-£250--then I have to pay the first £450 of any claim-yes?
  • Mazda Bongo - Buying a car on behalf of daughter, complications! 25 Nov 2018 (Forum)
For the journey back which will take 2 days, what do you reckon the cheapest way to get insurance cover for myself will be? My current thinking is that one of those temporary car insurance specialists might be best then my daughter can sort her own insurance out when we get back home? Any thoughts/advice would be gratefully received!
  • Why is my Lexus NX worth so little second hand? 17 Jul 2016 (Ask HJ)
Seven months ago I paid £34,000 for my Lexus NX. I have now been told it worth 25 per cent less than I paid. Is this normal? The car has only covered 8000...
  • Do you like it love it or loathe it? 12 Feb 2015 (Forum)
To this day, despite decades of having to cover substantial annual mileages, by and large I still get a good feeling when I turn an engine on in preparation for a journey, I look forward to the feeling of driving and still enjoy it. Do you still like driving, or if life allowed you to do without your car, would you rather not bother?

  • Various - Help me choose! 25 Apr 2014 (Forum)
I'm having a hard time deciding which of the cars below to buy and would appreciate some opinions. I'm a 33 yr old male based in Malta and cover 6k miles annually. I use a/c for 6 months of the year and very rarely have passengers.    1.
  • Ford Fiesta mk4 1997 - Car door lock driver's side 9 Jan 2013 (Forum)
Hi, still driving this car but recently and all of a sudden my front door will not unlock. I can always open it from the inside. what i don't understand is that sometimes it unlocks and locks and sometimes not.  i have read the forum here about a broken spring and i'ive tried WD40 and even bought a graphite lube spray from maplins which i squirted into the keyhole. it doesn't seem to be the cylinder and i tried starting to use my other key which has been put in the draw at home for years. i wonder what i could do. i have taken the inside door cover off but the latch is all a sealed unit...seems a bit difficult its not a central locking type but mechanical its a pain as it will fail an MOT in a months time as the door locks shut and also wont open with the outside handle even though i wasn't able to lock it with the key if i could take it out (ive got a haynes)and check it does it need some grease ?
  • Subaru Legacy 2.5 (2005) - Crankshaft aux-belt drive pulley disintegrated 1 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Pulley  seems to be a "Sandwich" construction of an outer metal drive ring with a rubber cushioning layer thats then all-bonded to the pulley that engaages on the end of the cranbkshaft. The bondng/glue appears to have come apart I bought the car from a main-dealer in June with a years  with a subaru proven warranty (its a 2005 MY car) (A) Is this a known issue with these engines, or indeed other vehicles - I have never had/seen it happen in 20yrs of motoring on mine or anyone elses car.

  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 1996 1.3 Best method of changing air filter? 2 Nov 2008 (Forum)
This might sound like a daft question but I changed the air filter on my dad's car a few weeks back (same engine 1.3). i found it quite hard as the top of the cover did not lift off, I had to slide the old out and slide a new one in, it took me a good 15 minutes (compared to about 30 seconds it took me to this my MK3 Fiesta and my dads old Ladas).

  • ECU problem - Hyundai Accent 1.3i 5 Mar 2006 (Forum)
and how much do you think it would cost to repair- he was quoting me £648 parts and £40 (1 hour) labour. The car is probably only worth £1,000 - so this would hardly be worth it. Are there on-going driving issues ? Have I just been very unlucky with my car as it was only covered by a 3 year warranty.
