The temperature gauge in my Fiesta reads 'normal' but the water in the coolant reservoir keeps boiling. I was advised to change the thermostat which i... -
K sera sera 5 Sep 2009 (Ask HJ)
I have recently been widowed and my husband always used to check our car's "vital signs" as he termed it. My simple query is how often should I check the... -
Chevrolet Aveo - Coolant Loss, Engine light, Warranty etc 26 Dec 2015 (Forum)
I drove on for another year topping it up - Approx a litre or so over the year. Left it to independent garage for 2nd service and got them to check coolant. They found nothing but I fear they are incompetent if not a little crooked as you'll see. Drove the car for another few months before I noticed creamy light brown mayo under oil filler cap and the coolant tank empty. -
Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 97 1.8 coolant leak spraying from metal pipe 1 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I have found a coolant leak on my Mk3 Golf Cabriolet 1.8. I had topped up the coolant last weekend after the warning light came on and when it relit on Wednesday after refilling Sunday I was starting to think coolant was leaking into the head gasket. -
Corsa B 1.2 C12NZ - Corsa B - Low power after head gasket replacement 28 Aug 2021 (Forum)
So the other week I changed my head gasket and timing belt as I had all the classic symptoms; milky coolant., white exhaust, low coolant. I changed the gasket and timing belt, as well as flushing the coolant and the engine seems happy. The idle rpm is stable and sounds normal. HOWEVER, it definitely still hasn't got all the power it used to (not that there was much to begin with). -
Renault Clio 1.2TCE - White smoke, sudden onset 22 Mar 2020 (Forum)
Neighbour's car, 85,000 miles. Losing coolant. Tiny bit of condensation mayonnaise on cap but none elsewhere (as far as one can see inside) and the oil looks OK. Coolant looks OK too. Engine sounds fine and the 'smoke' smells like steamy coolant, not burning oil. -
Vauxhall insignia 1.8 - Coolant loss bad mpg 22 Nov 2018 (Forum)
Hi all, so I recently purchased a Vauxhall insignia 1.8 2010. Really happy with it until error code 3 app reads on the dash (low coolant) I did a bit of research and found two common problem relating to this. One being a cracked header tank with I have replaced. The other is the egr/cooler. Which also could cause bad mpg. I’m currently getting 21 when google says I should be getting 37 I think. -
Ford Focus - Ford Focus 1.0 ecoboost coolant fault 19 Jul 2017 (Forum)
I had to call the AA yesterday when smoke / steam started billowing from my engine. Turns out the coolant pipe had burst, which I'm told, could have had a bigger impact on my engine. On checking FordETIS website, turns out there's a recall on my vehicle, and has been since April 2015. I didn't buy the car until August 2016. -
2006 FIAT Panda 4x4, 1.2, 8V - Non interferance engine? Fiat Panda 4X4 1.2, 8v 16 Oct 2011 (Forum)
Is the water pump driven from the cambelt? Q3. What are the intervals on coolant change? There is no reference to it in the service book. Q4. What type of coolant is required? It currently has the original “red” coolant. Q5. -
Citroen Xsara (1997 - 2004) - 98 1.4i Slow coolant loss 17 Feb 2009 (Forum)
I suspect the head gasket is beginning to go on my son's car as it needs half a litre of coolant every hundred or so miles. It's done 120,000 and there is no sign of a leak anywhere else. The dipstick is still pure oil but there is a bit of hard mayonnaise on the oil filler cap. My question is, is it worth trying something like Holts radweld at this stage...or just wait for the inevitable progression? -
Vauxhall Vectra B (1995 - 1999) - Petrol SRi 140 Coolant loss 23 Sep 2007 (Forum)
hi, i have a 1998 vectra sri 140. the problem is a water leak from the coolant system. there is a black valve looking thing, to the right of the engine bay as you look at it, near the top. in which three water hoses go into, with a small pipe coming out of the top of it. the water is shooting out from the sides of this valve near the top, from little square holes, but only when the engine is hot. this has never happened before..could something inside this valve? -

Extracting pure water from coolant syste 5 Mar 2006 (Forum)
I know, it was all my own fault, nothing wrong with the car at all. I've learnt my lesson. So, a very helpful person came along and topped my coolant system up with water. Very kind of him, however he filled it right up, leaving no space to add anti-freeze. Has anybody got any easy methods I could use to extract about a litre of water? I am not technically minded at all and only have limited tools. -
clear citroen coolant 27 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Hi folks. The coolant in our 2001 Citroen Picasso petrol 1.8sx requires topping up (only small amount after 30k, so no dramas), but am not sure which sort to use, the stuff in the header tank is clear (has usual antifreeze type smell) and my usual car parts place is unsure what I can top it off with (they said it may be organic type??). -
406 hdi 110 coolant loss 23 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I have a 2002 406 HDI 110 which is loosing coolant pretty fast while driving. It seems to loose it out the expansion bottle and the needle sits at 90 all the time on the temp gauge on the dash. This is with a new thermostat fitted too. I can loose about a litre of water in about 15 miles or so now. -
coolant ,for life? Volvo v70 t5 17 Oct 2004 (Forum)
hi, i decided to take the good advice supplied by you guys and bought the volvo v70 t5 ,glad i did brilliant car, however one more question on perusing the owners handbook it states that the coolant needs never changing, which to some one who has in the past always tried to change it every couple of years seems a bit strange, any views bearing in mind the engine is all aluminium alloy construction and i would have thought corrosion could a problem, or has the quality of antifreze moved on to a stage where this is inded the case? -
Coolant Flushing Vw Golf 19 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Hi Loooked in the expansion tank the other day, only to see a mess of rusty dark water. The coolant has never been changed, and I am going to change it. The question I have is, should I use a bottle of these cooling system flushes, or are they a waste of time? I can just as easily put a hose in the radiator etc and flush it that way. -
Skoda Felicia coolant leak 28 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Hi Gang, Mrs V's beloved P regn. Felicia has developed a small coolant leak. In fact, it looks as though it may have been there on/off for quite a while since there is some minor rusting where the fluid has collected over time and seeped down between the metalwork behind the front bumper. -
Thick brown sludge in radiator - Pug 106 25 Jan 2004 (Forum)
This morning whilst checking fluid levels in my pug 106 I discover that the radiator coolant reservoir was filled with thick brown sludge, all traces of coolant gone. Oil level had also dropped to virtually nil. Topped up oil and scraped out as much of the sludge as i could. What cuased this to happen, any ideas? -
Coolant temp gauge - Audi A4 29 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Advice needed please. The coolant temp gauge on my Audi A4 has started to return to the minimum (60) setting for a few minutes and then returning to the usual mid setting (90). Then a few mins klater will repeat this. No apparent reason, I\'m usually cruising at 65-70.
