  • New Energy label for tyres 4 Mar 2012 (Forum)
From November, all new car tyres will need to display a new Energy label (similar to the labelling used for domestic appliances) giving information on rolling resistance, wet grip and noise. Three symbols will be on the new labels:- 1) A symbol with the tyre and fuel pump - a measurement of the tyre's rolling resistance carried out on a calibrated test rig. The lower the rolling resistance the better the fuel economy. 2) A symbol with the tyre and rain - a measurement of wet grip, to ensure manufacturers do not compromise on grip to acheive a get a good energy rating.
  • Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer - Vauxhall Insignia ST vs BMW 318D ES 19 Feb 2012 (Forum)
I am not a car aficionado, in fact I am driving bashed up 1998 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 auto at the moment so either vehicle will be a big step up in quality. Can any of you offer any advice on the fuel efficiency of either vehicle or any general advice on the models. Any response greatly appreciated.   Cheers Mark
  • Volvo V50 2.0 R Design - Volvo V50 2.0 R Design - Change of circumstances 29 Jan 2012 (Forum)
So advice needed in two parts: The Volvo MPG is poor, so should I change it for a more fuel efficient car or should I hang onto it on the basis that changing the car would cost more than the fuel efficiency gains over the next 4 years? If I was to change does anyone have any recommendations?
  • Citroen C8 MPV (2003 - ) - 2004 2.0 HDi - Injector Problems 16 Jan 2012 (Forum)
In speaking to the garage and then another Citroen service centre to verify these costs I have discovered: a. On this model of engine it is impossible to remove the fuel injectors without damaging the cylinder head. b. This is true even if you remove the engine from the car. c. These engines are found on a range of Citroen models. I believe this is an engine design fault which the owner should not have to bear the cost or responsibility for.
  • MINI Cooper - MPG on a Mini Cooper 16 Dec 2011 (Forum)
At that time the mpg was low 30's. It is now December and the car has done just shy of 12,000 miles and the fuel consumption is 33.7mpg average on the trip computer. I do a mix of town and motorway driving, probably about 50/50. Mini suggest a figure of 52.3mpg. I know this is not attainable in the real world but I would expect low to mid 40's.

  • Advice needed on low cost (mostly) motorway drivin 12 May 2011 (Forum)
Ideally need a hatchback (for transporting larger items) 5. Good cornering  (fun & saves fuel). 6. Cruise control (useful for long journeys) 7. Easy to park   WHAT DOES NOT MATTER: - I do not care about make of car/image. - I do not care what the car looks like.
  • Help me decide- Volvo S40 / Peugeot 406 6 Dec 2010 (Forum)
Regular sound, almost like an indicator relay - Other issues unknown - is there anything in particular I should check for? - Fuel consumption likely to be better than volvo but lack of a computer means I have no indicator right now Cheers
  • Chrysler Voyager 2,5 td 1996 VM engine - how do I mesure temperature sensor voyager 2.5 td 22 Aug 2010 (Forum)
the car wont rev after 2000rpm, I changed 1 injector, wastegate actuator (was leaking some air but opening at 1,5/2 bar ( more or less)), air flow meter air filter and fuel filter. when I start the motor in cold it starts fine but at about 1000rpm , after 30 seconds it goes to 800 and starts to crank I have to give it some acelaration than stays fine, but if I disconect the temp sensor the rpm rises to 1000 and work fine with the fan at maximum.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 98 1.9 Running fine, now won't start! 5 Feb 2010 (Forum)
After getting in after leaving it for about 5 hours parked up started as normal, although didn't have heated screen, hazards, speedo, rev counter, fuel guage or odometer. The headlights and indicators worked, although the dash needles didn't move at all. I stopped for about 5 minutes, and when I came back to the car it wouldn't restart. The car turned over but wouldn't fire regardless of how primed the glow plugs were, or how much I pumped the fuel.
  • Cost / Benefit of Aero roof bars 20 May 2009 (Forum)
Thing is though, I can't imagine that the cost of these things could be even vaguely re-couped in fuel savings given that no matter what shape or weight your roof kit is the biggest drag must be coming from the bikes which are attached to them. Anyone tried these posh ones and do they make any difference ?
  • Nissan Primera III (1999 - 2002) - 01 2.0 Catalytic converter & O2 sensors-what type? 18 May 2009 (Forum)
Hi, I have been having fuel consumption problems in my 115K SR20 2l Primera. 6 + months fuel consumption has been up from 38mpg to 32mpg. Just this week it has thrown code P0420 (catalytic converter efficiency below tolerance).
  • Citroen Xantia (1993 - 2000) - 96 1.9 EMS light, loss of power, black smoke. 28 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Firstly the light comes on (EMS Orange), then she notices a drop in power and a deal of smoking out of the back, and nurses it to a local supermarket car park and calls me, who knows jack about engines. I check fuel (on reserve),all belts in place, oil dipstick, water and antifreeze was done just before Xmas. With a bit of a turnover after 10 minutes it starts again, and I'm able to make several circuits of the carpark no warning light on, so after the customary "dont drive the thing all the time on reserve" row, we bung some fuel in and drive back to where I'm working, during which time it starts belching smoke again, pretty black, and when I park it it leaves a smut mark on the ground of soot.
  • Nissan Almera (2000 - 2006) - 2004 1.8S Auto erratic mpg after service! 16 Mar 2008 (Forum)
When this was replaced it completely solved the problem and it drives perfectly now but there's one problem. We regularly check our fuel consumption (by the 'fill-the-tank-up' method) & before the service we were consistently getting 36 to 38mpg. Since the spark plug problem we've used 7 tanks of fuel (doing 2,500ish miles) & got the following mpg figures: First tank after the spark plug problem = 30mpg Second tank = 30mpg Third tank = 38mpg Fourth tank = 30mpg Fifth tank = 35mpg Sixth tank = 32mpg Seventh (& last) tank = 32mpg It's running perfectly, no problems at all, there aren't any warning lights on the dashboard, the brake pads were replaced on the service & the brake callipers were fine (plus it's accelerating and braking OK) so it's not the brakes binding & there doesn't seem to be any black smoke coming out of the exhaust.
  • Diesel reliability HDI technology 29 Jun 2007 (Forum)
However I double my oil changes from new with carefull running in for 3000 miles with a very gradual increase in revs, when starting from cold I allow to tick over for 30 seconds before I move & I drive gently without turbo boost untill the temp gauge is out the blue, I don't change down to overtake I use the torque very rarely going over 2500 rpm, mostly 1600-2250, I always use a major brand of fuel ( & not supermarket ) I use fuel line cleaner every 3000 miles ,Always allow the engine a slowing down period after a hard run & allow to idle for at least minute before I switch off. I cover huge milage & tow a 1500 kg caravan all over europe for the last 12 years with no problem on reliabilty!.
  • 1999 Peugeot 306 1.9 TDi Meridian 10 Jan 2007 (Forum)
I've been given quotes in the £1400-1800 + vat region to either recondition or replace the engine with dire warning attached that the fuel system may also be knackered which would cost another £1000 and it may never run properly again. Unfortunately - being in my last year of study I can't actually afford to replace the car. Is there anything other than a worn piston ring that could cause this - could it be a problem with the turbo or the fuel system?
  • Keep car? Change car? Lease Car? 22 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I get a car allowance from work of £320 a month (after tax) and this is roughly the monthly repayment on the 5 year loan I took out to buy the car from new in March 03. All fuel, tax, AA, servicing and maintenance is paid by the company and I pay tax on the £ value. So although fuel economy etc might not be a priority, it's all relative as I pay something towards it. Work is just about as secure as it gets with long notice period.
  • Racing weights - Jense's close call 26 Apr 2005 (Forum)
I've just read how close Jenson Button came to disqualification through the combined weight of him and car being below the 600KG minimum net of fuel. Although the FIA may yet intervene, for now, whatever the reason was (not given to the public) has been accepted. Made me recall my first win in the 'Supers' class one kart championship I was racing in at the time.
  • Astra running rough (longish) 28 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Rough running seems to be getting worse, but: Not majorly down on pulling power/compression (just a bit unenthusiastic), Spark Plugs replaced at 80k service Fuel & air filters replaced at 80k No noticable increase in fuel consumption No noticable oil or water consumption The above rules out various obvious things, I think. Any help welcomed. Thanks, Al.
