Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer - Vauxhall Insignia ST vs BMW 318D ES - k007030

Hi everyone I have a dilema. I am about to to plunge for a new car (2012) and I have narrowed it down to the following 2 vehicles:

1. Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer CDTi (160) EcoFLEX SRi NAV ( + options) a) front + rear parking sensors b) metallic paint

2. BMW 318D ES Tourer (no options)

The most important aspect is the fuel economy of the vehicle since I will be doing about 23k miles per year. I have reviewed both vehicles and checked many review websites to try and get definitive figures of MPG and I cannot determine a clear winner on the MPG issue.

Both manufacturers claim about 62MPG combines but I have see varying reports on actual MPG. I will be getting the vehicle on the Motability scheme so from a cost perspective there's not a lot in it although with the Insignia you do seem to get a lot more features for your money.

The Insignia list price + free options value comes in at £28530.

The 318D list price is £23910 I would also have to pay an extra £750 advanced payment for the BMW and the Insignia has a greater list of standard features which is reflected in the higher list price.

THE ONLY FINANCIAL DIFFERENCE TO ME IS THE EXTRA £750 FOR THE BMW.

As I said, motoring costs are my primary reason for shortlisting these two models. I am not a car aficionado, in fact I am driving bashed up 1998 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 auto at the moment so either vehicle will be a big step up in quality.

Can any of you offer any advice on the fuel efficiency of either vehicle or any general advice on the models. Any response greatly appreciated.

Cheers Mark

BMW all day long. You may have a few less toys, but this car will likely not rattle after 6 months and will please you more driving wise. Also, I think you are more likely to get nearer the stated MPG figures in the BMW as they are about the most efficient diesels going capacity-wise, he says tear in eye as I am an Audi driver !!

BMW, it's a no brainer.

The Vectra won't be as well built, it won't do anywhere near the MPG they say it will, the DPF will clog, and the dealers will be totally and utterly useless.

Test drive them both they are equiped with computers make up your own mind, a colleague at work has just sent his Insignia back now its three years old over 100k never missed a beat unlike a BMW 520 diesel the list of problems over the last two years is amazing. My w211 upto press nothing wrong and at £28k for the 220cdi I think is better value than both the cars you have mentioned . .Personnally given the choice of the two I would plumb for the Insignia just depends how the figures stack up regarding service and parts the Insignia is under warranty for 100k but you may do nothing like that.

I'm edging toward the Insignia if I'm honest. the 1st 3 years are covered by free servicing, tires etc. It's on Motability so if anything goes wrong it gets fixed (it's a lease agreement). After 3 years I get the option to buy the car and that's what I intend on doing.

I did test drive the Insignia and got about 40MPG on the motorway so was not impressed. The test drive of the 318ES ended up being a petrol automatic so I don't have comparison MPG figires for that.

The Beemer has the better engine and will be more fuel efficient, the Insignia will have more kit, reliability is a case of luck, either could be 100% reliable or a dog. BMW aren't the company they used to be when it comes to quality. As a Brit who has owned several BMWs and used to be a fan - I wouldn't touch a Beemer with a barge pole after they asset-stripped and dumped Rover - I will never forgive them for it - nor should anyone with a patriotic bone in their body..

The Insignia, It's front wheel drive, which in snow is far better. And yes, it's better value for money.

Just the point I was going to make! I had a 318i touring for 4 years (2002-6) and it was great to drive, but by sheer luck (and global warming) we had no snow here in that period, so I didn't find out what it was like in the snow. I suspect it would have been rubbish.

Try an Audi A4, VW Passat, or Skoda Octavia 2.0tdi 140 - good quality and fwd. Plenty of torque and good mpg. I have the Passat and get 700-800 miles per tank even (especially!) after the 140 to170 remap!

Ah yes, get the dearer, worse car, for those 2 days a year you might get snow. That's sensible.

If you are looking to buy the car after 3 years, the Insignia's rapid depreciation will make it the much cheaper car. That's about the only thing I can find in it's favour.

The BMW will be more economical (look at the real world figures on here) and should be more durable. If something does go wrong, BMW dealers are likely to be better at getting it sorted - in my personal experience the dealers aren't great (not as good as Honda or Toyota), but they are light years ahead of my local Vauxhall outfits.

As for snow, if you do a big mileage and are going to keep the car, invest in some winter tyres and the beemer will be fine. The dealers do a reasonably priced winter tyre programme (reasonable if you go for the steel wheels that is). They will even store the wheels for you.

Finally, it's all a matter of personal taste, but which car do you actually find the most comfortable and inviting? With the mileage you do, you are going to spend a lot of time in the car, so don't compromise for the sake of a few £'s. I

I agree with Tonto: I suggest you try other BMW dealers until you can get a test drive in the model you want. Trying a petrol automatic has given you only half the picture if you're after a diesel manual.
