• nissan vanette 1.5 petrol - engine cuts out randomly!! 25 Nov 2011 (Forum)
  hi all, my van has a random habbit of cutting out...dead as though it's been switched off. this can happen at all speeds and at idle in any weather an d while engine is hot or cold. have checked/replaced coil dizzy points leads plugs and have checked to see that fuel is getting through. any ideas ?? p.s ALWAYS  starts again after cutting out. sometimes will be fine for 100 miles other day it broke down 6 times in 10 mile trip. thanks in advance for any advice

  There are a lot of cars that would do a much better job at bridging the gap between the 'oldest, cheapest banger you can find' and these brand new motors. I'd reckon the fuel, tax and maintenance would struggle to match the depreciation on most of these suggestions. Like so many things trawling a database doesn't give the right answer and Mr Slavin should really have applied some thought to what the database produced at the end.

  It may be coincidence but since then during tick over the engine revs will rise occasionally to almost 2000 revs before dropping back to normal? Car passed MOT last week, so emissions etc OK.. Fuel consumption etc all good   Thanks

  Hi,   I'm having a bit of a problem starting my 405 diesel after replacing the leak off pipes and fuel filter.   I've bled the system with the hand primer but it refuses to start. If I flood it when starting it'll splutter to life but I need to keep the throttle pressed fully and it won't rev past 3000 rpm.

  HJ said take it to a dealer so I did. The info I have been given says Fuel pressure problem Is this a common fault? Could it be the particulate filter causing this? Do you have experience/knowledge of this kind of problem with XC70s?

  The last dealer updated the ECU but there seems to be no difference. Am I expecting too much, are all these models heavy on fuel or is there any tuning that can improve things.

    I have a 1998 Pug Boxer 1.9 (non Turbo) Diesel 270 SWB and on start up it has excessive greyish/whiteish smoke with a very strong smell of fuel.  When the engine gets up to temp this does die down a bit but does not go away altogether.  Could this be an injector fault? If so, I also have my wifes old 1994 Citroen Xantia 1.9 Turbo Diesel sat rotting away with a good engine - are the injectors compatable?

  LandRover have declined a warantee claim because their records show that before our ownership the vehicle had had petrol put into it's fuel tank. The car has done 28,000 miles, has a full service history and there have been no engine problems during the 18 months of my wife's ownership. Are Landrover justified in rejecting the warantee claim?

  It was working fine for 3 days but today this morning i turned the key and nothing happened. Nothing in like no lights no fuel pump sounds no leds blinking, nothing. Any ideas as to what the problem might be? p.s.: The last owner said that the car does start when i turn the key without starting the car then take out the fuelpump resistor and pluck it in again. i tried that for half an hour and i didn't get any results.

  I tow a caravan with my deisel XTrail and when accelerating hard with a heavy load on the car suddenly loses power-as if the fuel flow is being strangled. No mis-fires, no juddering, just a power constriction. Lift the foot of the accelerator and re-apply more gently and the problem goes. Can be a bit embarrasing if you are half way past a truck on the motorway and suddenly have to drop back 'cos your powers gone.

  Symptoms: Starts fine but absolutely no guts and won't rev beyond 1400rpm. Was hooked up to tech 2 and fault (hole) found in intercooler which was replaced. There was also fuel pressure fault code but this went after intercooler replaced. Garage looked at EGR and said that it was sticking. New EGR due to be fitted today. My concern is if it turns out not to be EGR where we go from here.

  sounded like there was a blow out on exhaust so took it to exhaust centre and cost me £350 for full exhaust set-up...after that the sound is still there but seems to be coming from under the bonnet at the air box..could this be the air flow meter? it also uses a lot of fuel and has got bad acceleration..when sitting idleing it would rev up on its own. does all these issues sound like a air flow meter problem? if yes is there A way to test the air flow meter? any help appreciated.....thanks

  I found that switching the ignition off then on when it started to die would keep it running. After a bit of revving and off/on on the ignition it ran perfectly again. Seems like the fuel is being shut off, anyone have any ideas? Much appreciated!

  i am experiencing loss of engine power with the car, the car just won't pull, very slow to go up hill, sometimes you smell the fuel inside the car. I brought the car to the mecanic, they change the turbo and the intercooler, after that the car reponded but one week later the problem came back. the visit to a second mecanic computer diagnostic found nothing anormal to the car but the problem still there a part the internal temperature and external temperature were funny( -1000 and 2000).

    Today noticed that when heater was turned up to max and fan switched on that water temp gauge fell from normal position to lower quarter. Car idles well, fuel economy as before and does not require top ups of coolant. Did put VAG-COM on and got a message for intermittent engine coolant temp sensor.   Could it be as simple as replace this sensor ??

  It seems that the A1/A5 oil has a slightly lower viscosity and is aimed at fuel efficiency but can't find a definitive answer as to why it could be damaging. Any suggestions would be appreciated, as my local motor factor wants almost double the amount for the A3 rated oil.

  (has been started every other day and left running for 30 mins or so.) I servicedit on Saturday (plugs,oil and filters (not fuel) I have now started driving the car and when i pull up to a junction/lights etc the car feels like it wants to stall and has started to self rev very slightly - however it never stalls. Any ideas?

  Hi my daughters 1.2 petrol clio dynamique starts fine but after about a minute coughs and splutters and sounds like its missing or fuel starved. is there a sensor controlling choke or similar that might cause this? once warm it runs fine and indeed if you let it run and floor the throttle a few times it clears but she is about to take her test in it and i dont want it to conk out. the local garage put a diagnostic on it but coulnt find the fault. help {yr and engine info added following email confirmation}

  I assume that the down side of purchasing the Audi will be the cost of spares and repairs and probably the insurance. Can anyone tell me about the fuel consumption and are there any other known problems that may occur with an A3 of this age and mileage. [Correct year entered into header}
• Mercedes Benz C-Class W203 (2000 - 2007) - 02 2.7 smell inside the car 30 Nov 2009 (Forum)
  There are not obviouse leaks and my local garage found that one injector had a leaking seal. This has now been sorted by a specialist fuel injection company. Smell is still there but maybe not quite as bad. Only notice it when we slow down or stop at traffic lights or roundabout. No problem when we are travelling. Has anyone had this and found the cure?
