RENAULT GRAND SCENIC 1.5DCI 2004 - LACK OF POWER - pope jp2

i am experiencing loss of engine power with the car, the car just won't pull, very slow to go up hill, sometimes you smell the fuel inside the car. I brought the car to the mecanic, they change the turbo and the intercooler, after that the car reponded but one week later the problem came back. the visit to a second mecanic computer diagnostic found nothing anormal to the car but the problem still there a part the internal temperature and external temperature were funny( -1000 and 2000). I don't know what to do now. can anyone help please.

What reason did they give for changing the turbo was it a new unit.Check the EGR valve or better still replace it,check the MAF sensor, and if that does not work you need a Renault specialist .

The plug on your egr valve has 6 terminals only 5 are used 1-2-4-5-6 with plug disconnected using multimeter with ignition on check for 12v at terminal 1 at plug

then check for 5v at terminal 2 re-connect plug and check for voltage at terminal 6

engine idling back probing voltage at this point should be approx 1v as you rev engine up

voltage should increase Hth regards mickeybo

Hi there, the car has been recalled to renault for a faulty electronic problem, after checking the car they found nothing, even Renault that is supposed to resolve the problem is not able to detect what is wrong with the car, the only suggestion they came with is to change the cam belt, is it the wright solution or the cam belt has an effect to the loss of power, I challenged my mechanic about the problem of EGR but said to me that when he changed the turbo, the EGR seemed ok, so I do not know what to do now, please Help

Hi there, the mechanic said at the time that the turbo was faulty, he changed the turbo and the intercooler, asked about the EGR after your advice, he said that the EGR was ok for him, and now he said that that he would change the cam belt and check the EGR again, is it the right move? Thanks for your help

Your mechanic appears to be ignorant of the fact that :

Renault diesel turbos have a history of having sticking EGR valves which lead to burned out turbos.

Even I know that.

So if it is losing power, and the turbo has been replaced but not the EGR valve, you have to question whether those who are doing work know what they are talking about.

EGR valves stick due to carbon build up and this is NOT - repeat NOT- picked up by diagnostic equipment.

It is standard practise to change the EGR valve if the turbo has gone - cause and effect.

Frankly I would change your mechanic: as i said above he appears to be a numpty and is changing everything in sight. If the cambelt has jumped a tooth, that can easily be seen .. but changing it for the sake of changing it is madness.

My advice:

Find a competent mechanic who is used to these engines.. and when you have got it working properly and can afford it, get rid and never buy another Renault.

The last piece of advice is very sound, your mechanic seems to no nothing about Renaults and yet even people without any mechanical knowledge seem to.What changing the cam belt will do god only knows unless its its completely shot and if it was it would not give an intermitant fault it would be there all the time and you would know about it.I really feel you have a useless mechanic who is stringing you along how has he tested the the turbo or the egr valve does he have the proper volume/pressure wrigs or did he send them away to be tested or was it a guess. If he has fitted a new turbo without changing the oil seals or the EGR you are going to be in a worse state in few weeks you stand a very good chance of blowing the engine.
