Roof boxes vs trailers 11 Oct 2007 (Forum)
The roofbox is obviously limited by the (usually) 75kgs roof mounting weight of most cars and the trailer can be used for runs to the tip etc... I would imagine the trailer would be better for fuel economy trailing in the wake of the car though obviously you are then limited by speed. -
Daewoo Lanos (1997 - 2002 ) - 98 1.6 Non-starter 3 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Starter motor turns, camshafts move (so timing belt intact), checked HT leads for spark, disconnected fuel line, and petrol P's out when engine turns so pump etc OK (and yes it's petrol). Could it be the immobiliser cutting something else out that I haven't checked? If so how can I check? Any help appreciated. -
Tory 'showroom tax' could raise the price of cars 10 Sep 2007 (Forum)
A sliding scale would put highpowered sports cars and SUVs in the most expensive bracket while making low-emission hydrogen fuel-cell cars exempt. http://tinyurl.com/yqh2yv -
Green driving? 17 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I know this can be true, but if you're using the gears correctly I thought higher revs isn't necessarily worse. What is best/worse? Low revs can cause more load higher fuel consumption, won't it? A low gear will give more torque so that you can accelerate quickly and change up quicker. In theory, I believe the most efficient way is to floor it, but that's not much good for the car. -
2003 1.8 Mondeo Zetec 31 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Happens from 2nd gear upwards, especially say coming to a turn off and I have to go from 3rd down to 2nd, turn corner then accelerate and up to 3rd it starts.. weird, I was told it might be fuel-injection issue. Anyone any ideas? tks. -

Vauxhall Agila engine management light 28 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Performance is normal and exhaust emissions are normal. Have just used a code reader and I'm getting P0170 which is "fuel trim malfunction" . I have visually checked the MAF sensor and cleaned out the throttle body. I would like to check the EGR valve but I can't locate it. I'm assuming it has one because I've seen it for sale on a vauxhall dealers website. -
Pug306 Stalling 22 Sep 2006 (Forum)
When my foot is off the gas, the idle stepper control motor often chatters & if it stalls will continue chattering. I have changed the spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter, timing belt and cleaned the Bosch single point petrol injection components, to no avail. Does anyone know what I should try next ? Thanks Alan -
Diesel engine life 7 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Hi Folks I remember many years back a friend telling me diesel engines ware normally good for double the amount of millage than a petrol engine - engines running at lower revs and diesel having a lubricant in the fuel were i seem to recall the main resons- . At that time before ecus he said around 100k-120 - pertrols and 200k for diesels. In recent posts on this forum it seems petrols engines are good for between 120-200k and i was wondering if diesel engines would still do double the amount of miles than a petrol - and if not why not?? -
A free Jag - worth the hassle? 24 May 2006 (Forum)
It is a runner apparently, and is garaged in Majorca where presumably it has spent most its life. Should I consider it?! Would you? The new owner has to collect it from Majorca. Imagine the fuel bill alone for the journey back home..! Do you think its collectable? I wouldn't plan to clean it up and sell it on for a vast profit, but equally I'd be scared of being the owner of a money pit that I can't dispose of! -
Vectra DI 2nd hand diesel pump programin 16 May 2006 (Forum)
1999 Vectra 2.0 DI with 149,000 on the clock. Still off the road with a fuel problem. Will tick over but wont rev - just goes a little rough when I put my foot on the throttle. Also hard to start if left overnight, runs on 2 or 3 cys and black smokes for 5 mins. then clears and ticks over OK but won't rev. -
Cavalier 1995 Turbo Diesel 12 Mar 2006 (Forum)
I've tried a manual small pump syphon and I've tried sucking on the tube to syphon. The tube goes into the tank about 2 feet but I'm having no joy I can see the fuel coming up the tube a bit only. Does anyone know if there is any sort of anti syphon filter or could I be doing something wrong? Is there some sort of technique or method any tips would be welcome {Shouting (ie, upper case) amended. -
5 year Honda Civic 1.4 service or not 5 Jan 2006 (Forum)
My question is honda want £150 to service the car (which doesnt include plugs as its the 45k service) I could buy oil, filter, air filter, fuel filter, pollen filter, spark plugs and do it myself for £50 in parts, but no dealer stamp. Will the SH affect its value in 2 - 3 years time when I sell it? I would retain all receipts and make a note of what I did and when. -
Cavalier 95 tips replacing petrol tank 10 Nov 2005 (Forum)
I've noticed a weeping from the seam just under and around the area where the fuel filter is. I'll have a go with some sort of patch system, any products that you recommend would be warmly accepted, however, should the tank have to be replaced does anyone with any experience have any nuggets of info that would help me along. -
2001 mondeo tddi problem 28 Oct 2005 (Forum)
can any one advise or help, i have a 2001 mondeo tddi with 173,000 ( its a taxi ) after being in traffic or continious driving my car starts to jerk and lose power, this then clears itself for about another 10 miles then cuts out, it will start up again but seems like its misfiring as i try to pull away, have had a new lift fuel pump fitted 25k miles ago and have been told there is no way this is causing the problem, the injectors are fine as is the main diesel pump, would be grateful of any suggestions -
Picasso, Petrol in Diesel tank 25 Oct 2005 (Forum)
After signing for the vehicle, the salesman drove him to the local Tesco, one and a half miles away, and put £40 worth of fuel in to it.On the way back 1 mile from Tesco the engine stopped and was started and driven 1/2 mile to showroom, where he was told that the salesman had put petrol into the tank. After waiting 4 hours he was told everything was O.K. now and he took the car home.He has had no trouble since, but wonders if any long term damage has been done -
Rover 75 - Advice needed 20 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I have driven the car and it is in excellent condition - spotless inside and almost as good outside. I like the car a lot - it seems like a lot of car for not a lot of money - good fuel consumption to boot. My only concern is, you've guessed, about the future availability of spares although I understand reliability should not be an issue. Advice gratefully received - should I buy it? -
Dash lights - '93 405 14 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I've got a '93 L Peugeot 405 1.6 that runs fine but recently the dash warning lights (oil, battery, STOP, temp, fuel) all come on together occasionally if I brake hard or corner enthusiastically (not that I do that m'lud). The car shows no sign of being about to stall and carries on running ok. It's got me stumped. -
FAO Focus 1.6 owners! 6 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I haven't even had the a/c on except today, right before I filled up...town/country driving should yield more I feel (I usually get 39-ish)...what are you guys getting? Is anyone else (of anything) noticing greater fuel consumption lately? Or from the '98 Unleaded' that I put in last time round (because I only got 33 from the previous 95 tank, using a/c a lot)? -
Queues in Filling Stations, When's Best? 7 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Drive off theft prevention, no doubt! But, & this could be a poll topic, 'What time of day do you re-fuel?' You try & avoid the Q's backing onto the carriageway, from the (few) filling stations left, around here & you'd be verrrrry lucky!! VB
