I'm awaiting full details, but it seems that a pal of my Father is trying to offload a LHD Jaguar XJS V12 for free! It is a runner apparently, and is garaged in Majorca where presumably it has spent most its life.
Should I consider it?! Would you? The new owner has to collect it from Majorca. Imagine the fuel bill alone for the journey back home..!
Do you think its collectable? I wouldn't plan to clean it up and sell it on for a vast profit, but equally I'd be scared of being the owner of a money pit that I can't dispose of!

Why not try and offload in Spain where as a left hand drive it may be worth a little more.
|
As Majorca, as I'm sure you are aware, is an island it could prove even more expensive to bring it back...:-)

If it was me?
Adventure time.
Take some time off. Get an easyjet flight out there. Drive it home. There is a car ferry from Majorca to the mainland.
Go on - do something mad bad and slightly dangerous

That does sound tempting RF, but is there a danger he'd be starring in his own, untelevised, Top Gear buy a banger challenge (Italian supercars, coupes, porsches under 1500) without the backup behind it.
Actually, come to think of it, get some EuroCover from the AA or RAC and go for it. Worst case is they bring you home on a trailer.
Go on.
Go on, go on, go on, go on.

The XJ-S can be a money pit. It can also be a great car to own and enjoy. The secret is to have a bit of knowledge about the car. Years of collected wisdom is available in the free-to-download book by Kirby Palm: Experience in a Book.

I've got a Series 3 XJ12 and this has been invaluable to help me keep it running and in good condition.

Worst case is it dies somewhere in France/Spain. No biggie. Abandon it where it dies. Hitch a ride to the nearest city/airport, hand over a few Euros to Mr Ryan, and fly home.

...It is a runner apparently, and is garaged in Majorca where presumably it has spent most its life....
But presumably it will need some form of tax/insurance/spanish Mot certificate first.
If it´s got those, and you´ve got the time, go for it. It´s a lovely run up from Barcelona through France, and face facts, you´d be doing it in some style. Keep to 60ish and you should see, what, 20mpg?

According to Nickdm profile he is living in France so would think its a very good bet.

If you don't do it, can I?

One of my favourite phrases in life is "what's the worst that can happen?"
|
Go for it!
The worst that can happen is the Big Cat coughs somewhere in Spain. In which case you get the Talgo train back to France and you've had a nice holiday in the process.
And, as the car's free anyway, if big bills loom once you get it home, you have nothing to lose by scrapping it or selling it on for spares or restoration.
As suggested, just get some breakdown cover so that if it leaves you stranded, you can get to the train station and it'll either be recovered or hauled to the nearest breaker's yard for you.
Bon route!

>>"what's the worst that can happen?"
Absolutely. If you can't be shot for it, how bad can it be ?
Go for it.

|
Go for it! If you get as far as SW France in it and decide (it decides?) enough is enough I've got a big slightly leaky barn which will be just the job for off-road storage for a while.
