Cavalier 95 tips replacing petrol tank - Babygotoo
I've noticed a weeping from the seam just under and around the area where the fuel filter is. I'll have a go with some sort of patch system, any products that you recommend would be warmly accepted, however, should the tank have to be replaced does anyone with any experience have any nuggets of info that would help me along. I've spoken to my local garage who didn't want to give even a rough price due to "rusty bolts, cracking pipes etc etc".

Years ago I used a product called Petro Patch and it was fine for the problem you describe. It is made by Granville and is still available SFAIK. A google search for "Petro Patch" will bring you lots of answers and sources. It must be worth trying vis a vis the hassle of changing a tank - good luck!

I've done some googling and the epoxy products appears to have over taken the petro patch, however if anyone has had particular success in doing seams with one or the other I'd be interested to know,

Thanks

A possible problem with the epoxy products is that they (may) have to be applied to a clean petrol free surface so you will have to drain the tank and get the problem area cleaned up and dried out, I recall applying Petro Patch to a weeping seam and getting a good result first time.

I used epoxy to repair a tank and it worked very well, wire brushed first.Still had to drop the tank for access and had to weld up bits of metal and bolts to repair the straps.I recall the Cav tanks were notorious for perforating due to a mud trap on the top.

I've used Plastic Padding Leak Fix on petrol tanks. It works up to a point, but--

you need to go well beyond the point of leakage and clean back to bare metal. Very often this will reveal other places where the metal is so thin that it is almost through. This can be a heartbreaking progression from slight leak to big holes!

If the leak is on or close to a seam, you are on a loser.

If the leak is where the retaining straps fit then they will crack the filler back off.

You used to be able to get a chemical that you put in the tank(off the car)sloshed it around and left overnight to dry.Used to be advertized in vintage car mags.

And here it is: www.frost.co.uk/item_Detail.asp?productID=8223 You have to get the tank off, throughly clean it inside and then slosh the sealant around inside it. For something like a Cav it might be easier to get a good second-hand tank from a scrapper.

Thanks, the price of the stuff above is just about cheaper than a replacement new tank less delivery, my local scrappy wants £40 for second hand one which i thought was a bit much.

I've got hold of some Petro Patch putty, it might be a stop gap but at 192k I'm loathe to start spending on it,

Thanks for the replies

On another forum I frequent, someone recently got a brand new Cavalier tank from www.fueltanksdirect.co.uk for £63.10 including next day delivery. Just took a browse on the fuel tank site, and that offer still stands.
